how about doing something plain yet elegant? do just a plain background colour for example black , then just put few plants that appeals to people?
no need those fancy focusing skills and etc to appeal my attention.

It all depends on what kind of magazine you are designing... The theme to be exact... Whether you want it to be classy, to be cartoonish, to be eerie (yes, butterflies can be eerie), goth, simple black and white, poster-like, or whatever.

It'll be better if you have a theme before you start to brainstorm about the design.

One thing though.. If you're mainly using a laptop for designing, make sure you make the design brighter... from my experience, the designs that looked great on my laptop screen turned out to be quite dark when printed out.

Try these tips:
ONE big object/ group with a good composition.
Several contrasting colors.
Big typography with Sans Serif font, kerned.

my tip..
just do it simple.. (dont use fancy type)
make sure u used highress picture for cover... and if u used photoshop..
make sure tu used 300dpi an above..
if u want to do about nature.. used sans serif font for ur mask head to get the fill of nature... IMHO...
BTW...
why not u use illuistrator... i think ist batter using it then photoshop.. IMHO..

goodluck...

For newbie I will suggest MSPublisher. Lots of custom templates to choose from. Choose and edit. Its much easier that way. biggrin.gif

Something that captures people's attention?
If Nature, skimply clad babe in a nature scenery.

If Insects or butterfly, skimply clad babe bathed in insects/butterfly or maybe the insect/butterfly covering certain parts.

Let's face it. Sex sells.

Fonts? It depends on your title and direction. Perhaps a serif font would be more suitable. Keep the font white for now and let your photo/picture on cover shine and attract attention.

hmm...
very clear and big picture of one image ( either one of the subject ), and the other two subjects in smaller size ...

"title' of the magazine is just as important...

chewxy, yours one looks more like a comic cover than a magazine to me. Magazine cover are not that colourful and based on genre of magazine. Just go to the newstand and observe. Grab a few good ones and you are on the way to get a good one.
We have to follow first. During infant stage we see how people walk and we follow. It applies to all we learn biggrin.gif

Er... which part of Moderate Comics did you not get?

What I was trying to stress is that the process is similar... the style is your own
