I'll share my own personal experience here. But you can also check out alkt's own experience which is well documented on another thread in this forum (sorry lazy to find the link now).

You don't need to show receipt/invoice/proof of sale/etc. All you need is your serial number (which can be found at the back of the console) and date of purchase (need not be verifiable - I believe this is just to track on their own database).

- call up xbox360 service hotline (you'll probably end up with the outsourced centre in India OR Singapore)
- talk to the staff attending to your call, explain your console is 3ROD
- they will take down your serial number & date of purchase. they didn't even ask me where I bought my unit, which leads me to believe that it doesn't matter where you bought your unit, MS wants to honour their warranty commitment irregardless so long as you haven't voided your warranty
- they will then check their system to see if your console had previously been registered (e.g. via xbox.com or via console)
- if not registered they will register it on the spot for you in which case u need to tell them your name, address, contact info, etc.
- after that, they will give you a Service Reference Number, which you must write down (so prepare a paper and pen) because they may not follow up with an email after your phone call
- they will then tell you where to pick up your replacement unit. write down the address, operating hours, etc because this info also may not be emailed to you as in my case
- a 3ROD failure usually ends up with a 1:1 replacement unit. MS states their response time is usually 3 working days, which means your replacement unit will be ready for collection after that.
- bring your 3ROD unit to the service centre & quote your Service Reference Number. *remember* u cannot just drop by the service centre WITHOUT a Service Reference Number.
- they will check that it is in fact a 3ROD problem, and upon confirmation, they will replace your unit
- just bring your bare unit. do not need to bring any cables, hard disk, etc. just bare console.
- so that means only one trip to the service centre. no need to leave your 3ROD unit there and come back another day to collect your replacement unit.

Hope that helps.

sorry to be bearer of bad news, but if i remember correctly, alkt's case same thing - if casing moded, warranty voided. so M$ won't exchange. but i guess there is no harm explaining your situation to them and see what they have to say.

edit - cheh ... alkt one step faster.

Don't waste your emotions worrying about 3ROD. We should all just sit back and enjoy the console, the games & our vibrant community. Cross that bridge only if and when you really have to. Otherwise, you'll be spending waaay too much time worrying about the unknown and unforeseen.

Now everyone go and enjoy themselves.

I'll share my personal experience. It really depends on who serves you - some of the customer service rep can be nice, others ... err... let's just say not so nice. I never end with the latter, maybe cos I have a scar across my face like Marcus Fenix. Anyway ....

If you get a nice person at the service centre, they'll guide you through the process and explain it well .... BUT BUT if not, do the following anyway cos IT'S YOUR RIGHT!

(1) Open the faceplate and there should be a silver sticker with the words Microsoft imprinted stuck across both halves of your console. Make sure that's not broken else warranty on your replacement unit is void.

(2) Look at the honeycomb ventilation holes at the back of the console. There is a split across those holes (top to bottom) that separates the console into 2 halves. Inspect the hinges between the split. These hinges should not be broken.

(3) Lastly, I got them to test it out on the spot i.e. plug it in, plug to TV, etc to make sure it works before I left the service centre.

the thing is you need to register the console first before reclaiming the warranty correct?
*
Yes that's correct. Register either online yourself via xbox.com (in the cases I've read when claiming from SG), or via telephone where the service rep will do it for you on the spot (in the case of HK).

The box long gone liao bro, does it matter if my gamer tag registered under US ?
*
Does not matter. They don't ask u for your gamertag. This is a hardware issue, not an account-related matter.

You also don't need the box nor any info on the box to claim warranty. So no worries if anyone has thrown out their boxes.

I just realised something just now .... and maybe I shouldn't say this out loud ... but what the heck .... we are all brothers.

M$ doesn't require proof of purchase. So it's possible to state any date of purchase when u register your console. What this means is that your warranty doesn't start until the "date of purchase" as stated in the registration process.

Sooooo, if u haven't registered, don't do it yet until it's necessary (i.e. after u've unlocked the 3ROD achievement).

And, when you DO register, state a date that's closer to the current date. Why? Then your warranty lasts over a longer period cos it starts counting down 1 year from the "date of purchase". Which means you can also extend coverage to your replacement console in case that one also catches the 3ROD disease.

Sorry for my evil-ish ramblings. But hey .... we're just protecting our investment. I wish I had realised this before I registered my console. Stooopid innocent me!

I know it's OT, but honestly speaking, if you're getting a console for gaming, it's best to stick with 360 for now. PS3 sucks in terms of choice of games and it's online gaming experience. I'm using mine mainly as a BD player, so it's still awesome in that regard.

Personally, I don't agree that it's the heat that causes it - may be a contributory factor - but not the key factor. Speculating nonetheless, it's a design thingy, probably soldering thingy, likely manufacturing QC thingy, maybe it's just Billy Pagar has placed a time-bomb inside that goes kaboom randomly to give it's customers a fuller experience of M$ customer service and replacement policy.

I mean my 3ROD happened during winter. It's well ventilated & I don't "hardcore" use it for hours on end. Still one fine day, did a cold start of the console, and my console flashed me 3 red tits.

Sorry to hear that. Now u can proudly join my squad and wear the achievement sig.

But seriously, all is not lost. Go through the exchange process and you'll get your replacement soon. I know it's leceh and all, but at least you'll still get a replacement. Ask us if you need guidance. Otherwise, most of what you need to know and do is already in this thread.

Based on date of purchase. The date of purchase + 12 months is covered, so that's why in my earlier post I said when u register with the hotline/online, they ask u for your purchase date, u just tell them a date close to the current date and that way you have "extended" warranty since no "proof of purchase" date is required in the exchange SOP.

Cannot be manufacturing date as your right as a purchaser only starts once title passes to you ie purchase date. Otherwise, you'll start seeing customers checking out the manuf dates and only want to buy new units. Then old ones cannot sell.
