Ei, dun la terasa. Hahahah. biggrin.gif HAIR ALGAE?? VERY SMARTTTT. ROFL

NewbieBetta>
Wow. So sad one. T__T Like Benny said... maybe it's the way you aged the water or something something got to do with that??

Benny>
You mean kenot simply just aged the water kah? I know must put Seachem in the water to hapuskan the chloramine la... but other than that? boleh ajar any other technique on how to aged water and how to prevent the bettas from kena fin rot? And Indian almond leaf (ketapang) soak in water is good right? So you recommend how long to soak? 2 days??
*
i used to age water(with anti-chlorine+chloramine(a good branded one)) for at least 24 hrs...no more than 2 days(as i usually change water every 2 days tongue.gif) By right, indian almond leaf is suppose to help prevent/cure fin rot but if u soak the leaf in the water for too long, it will start to grow fungus(as i tried to age it with my water for more than 24 hours). 1 trick a singaporean 'kaki' taught me was to cut off the stem of the leaf and roll/shove the leaf into an empty small mineral water bottle and age it until the colour turns brownish and then throw out the leaf (and continuing mixing the 'brown water' with each water change). also, fyi, the brown water has the same effect as black water sold in LFSs if i remember correctly tongue.gif(sorry its been 5 yrs tongue.gif)

No wer, i thought swim bladder was like a cancer ?
what kind of medicine that you mentioned ?
well, hopefully will work as u said
*
swim bladder is not cancer....its not life threatening...its just a disorder that will be with the fish for life....Dropsy is like cancer...

Back to the previous topic, Aged water can remove chlorine but what about chloramine?

as far as I know, Malaysia's water only has chlorine and no chloramine.
I tried finding the info on the net but little results.
Do you know for sure, ynneb?
If it is true, I'm going to add seachem to my aged water.

the pea idea is simple.
SBD is caused by an imbalance to the swimbladder, normally caused by too much food, not enough poop.
So the pea helps the betta poo.
I tried feeding peas before. The entire poop comes out green.
*
i myself do not know about Malaysian water....maybe got a kit to test chloramine?

But Benny, isn't mineral water hard water?? Izzit the ketapang/IAL leaf will dissolve the minerals?? biggrin.gif

And that means IAL leaf can only be left in the water for a few hours la until it turns very soggy, then have to remove it straight away?

And as I know, IAL leaf will make the water like tea colour... so just leave the water there until the next water change is done? tongue.gif
Ivan>

Regarding Seachem to treat the water.... I heard it's very concentrated. SLS ppl said only to use 1 or 2 drops to the water cuz the whole bottle can last your entire life. And once you put Seachem, dun need to aged the water adi. That's what Kevin said. If you test it out, pls tell me the results ya. Thanks!!  laugh.gif

About feeding betta peas... ya ya... have to be cooked or raw? And what type of peas to feed? Got so many types... @_@

Haha. Thanks ya! XD
*
mineral water? not advisable to use mineral water for any fish...use normal tap water...also make sure that you use the unfiltered water as some filters totally filters out the chlorine and adds in additional minerals hence changing the chemistry of the water totally.

Just soak the leaf for less than 24 hours...or before the leaf starts to grow fungus as the growth of fungus causes bettas to get fin rot.

Question 1 : How do you guys prepare the ketapang leaves?
Wash with tap water > Dry in Sun > Place dried leave in a water container for about 24 hours > pour water into tank ?

Question 2 : Is it a problem if the water in the betta tank is too dark yellow from the ketapang tea water?
*
answer 1:

pick up the leaves that have fallen on the floor. Wash it til all the dirt is removed, then soak the leaf in the water in any container(be it together with the betta or wherever)

answer 2:

no problem at all...just make sure that the leaf does not grow any fungus.

Guys, One of my fake Female got pinecone/dropsy!
Currently i have quarantined it to a icecream container with ketapang tea.
What Should i do now?

a) Flush it.
b) Release it to a pond.
c) keep in box until it dies a slow death.
d) .....suggestion....
*
d) apparently, feeding ur betta the yellow powder(LFS medicine) can heal dropsy....but then again getting ur betta to eat medicine is a long shot. Just buy medication for dropsy and let nature take its course.

@cirebonbetta,

Yes, it does look like the correct leaf tongue.gif Btw, only pick those on the floor....those green ones 'tak boleh pakai' yet. It has to be brown leaves.

I guess the Diamond filtered water are prolonging him.

I hope someone doing fish disease research will take him.  notworthy.gif

If execution, 100ml of stabilizer & then .. ? Any idea?
*
omg diamond filter? Read alot of research condemning that filter doh.gif

Anyways, back to the main topic. There could be a chance that your fish is not suffering from dropsy. Are you sure of that diagnosis?

Here are the more humane ways of killing ur betta (as learnt from betta breeders):
1) flush them down the toilet.
2) throw them into monsoon drain
3) put them in the freezer(yes, i am serious...and i have tried it b4)

for that quality...i expect RM1.50...personally think u got ripped off sweat.gif

BTW, do u know how many % aquarium shops make for each sale of bettas? Approx. 200-300%(min). In the past, i have personally supplied an aquarium shop with low grade crowntails for rm1.50 each....only to find out that he was selling each for RM25. Also found out that aquarium shops purchase veil tails for only 30 sen each.

hahahaa.....hav to understand the shop situation also ma....n given the price, they hav to take in big bulk....
this coming trip back to my hometown, i try to go n find 1 of my fren, his father is a local betta breeder....hehehehe...
hope to get some good stuff from him....wink.gif
*
actually, aquarium shops do NOT have to take in much....their bulk in terms of bettas would be 30-50 bettas which is not much in terms of the amount of frys expected to get from each spawn.

If you want quality fish, obviously i would recommend you to purchase from local breeders...And of coz, quality matches the price you pay.

gosh thanks for the info. hmm any idea how to get bettas to breed? my pair doesn't seem to want to breed and i had to separate the female since the male keeps harrassing her.
*
there are a few variations to the way to get bettas to breed. Well, this is (or was) my way. Use 2 see-thru (transparent) containers of different sizes(1 small and 1 big- make sure the smaller container can fit into the big container) Place the female into the small container and the male into the big container(same water level for both containers). Place a half-cut styrofoam cup floating in the big container for male to build the nest. Leave them there for a few days until both of them are ready. Siphon the uneaten/faeces everyday and top-up a lil water. The female will show vertical stripes when she is ready. I normally let her 'fatt hao' abit until she stops running from the male and the male calms down abit. Then i transfer her into the big container. Then, fingers crossed tongue.gif

yeah thats wat i planning to do at 1st... but to buy a fish for rm30++ for a first timer like me is really risky maa. so i opted to buy a betta at the nearest pet shop to try 1st. nvm la rm2-3 get ripped off no need to make a big fuss. haha.

btw my betta is always look hungry. always like come to the bottom of the aquarium and find food. although i just feed him like at 9pm. should i feed summore?
*
Just don't overfeed. If you feel that ur betta is starving, then you could feed ur fish twice a day(lesser amount at a time of coz)

that's what i'm currently doing, she did have the vertical stripes but still nothing else happen, male still chasing her around. and sometimes i come back to find that she managed to somehow get into the bigger bowl, probably jump over the coke bottle i put in =/ i got lots of water cabbage and the male did build his nest a few times. you think they will still want to mate ah? haha..
*
I guess u the male is not ready yet...

normally wat i do is, before putting the female into male living area, i will feed the male full full 1st.....it prevent from the male to attack the female as he is hungry, also when the male is full, they then to be less aggresive..... some sort of like this....totally own opinion....
*
i seriously doubt there is such a thing....never heard of b4 tongue.gif maybe some sifus can shed some light on this hmm.gif

extremely poor water condition. Try changing water everyday. Make sure u r using anti-chlorine(do not overdose/underdose). Make sure u put in a pinch of aquarium salt. From the looks of it, your betta could die within these few days sad.gif

if u want quality bettas, i wouldn't recommend u to buy them from pet shops....most of the time petshops' bettas carry crappy genes....i know..i supplied quite a few of crappy ones in the past tongue.gif

Try going to http://www.bettasocietymalaysia.com.my/forum/index.php and ask around....

i have never encountered fin rot where the fin turns black....so i cannot confirm that it's fin rot...anyway, melafix is the best solution for fin rot...apart from being a 'barber' for ur fish tongue.gif

btw, today just adopted 2 male & 1 female HMPK from my fren. But the male seems very shy & scare...not like those betta i bought b4, anyway to train them to be more aggresive ? i tried to using mirror, but it avoiding it  sweat.gif
*
Try isolating the shy/scared betta for a week or so. Don't let it see any other betta. It should start getting territorial after being isolated thumbup.gif
