oedema is a not caused by drinking too much water...it is caused by heart failure, kidney, tyroid, liver (to name a few) or in a normal person heat which causes the peripheral blood vessels to expand, resulting in fluid shifts from the blood vessels to surrounding tissues and long periods of immobility such as a long flight where blood pools in the veins.
the correct term is hyperhydration or water poisoning/water intoxication which is a fatal disturbance in brain function when normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by a very rapid intake of water.
p.s- yes. too much water can actually kill you.
