Can we ask for salary increasing?

okay,let say that u already 1 year with ur company and ur salary is RM 1.7k.
and then 1 new employee just join from other company with 1 year experience (same like u) and have same position like u but he get RM 2.2k salary...hmm.. my question is can we ask for an increase in our salary so we also get around RM 2.2k?is it acceptable?or we cant do nothing about this? this happen in my new company..
