It's important to recognize the influence of reading on players these days. Back in DotA 1, only serious players would bother hunting for related reading material to supplement their in-game skill. Today, most "tricks" are readily available to fresh players, together with a wealth of tutorials, guides, and professional matches to spectate. As a result you have players with a high level of game knowledge, but without the mechanical skill to complement it. I call this the skill vs knowledge gap, and I believe it to be the main factor that hinders player improvement in the higher 3k and lower 4k bracket. Each bracket has it's weaknesses, and improving on those will help one move up.
