The Legendary pieces are the ones to which the animations and icons are tied to. For the Abaddon set it's the sword, the ES set the Totem and for the Pudge set the Crazed Tassels (head piece).
You absolutely don't need the full set to get the sweet stuff, just the Legendary pieces.
