QUOTE(Enigmatic @ Mar 26 2014, 01:56 PM) Capable, yes quite true - but is it the best choice? No, I do not think so. QUOTE Why Digital Is Better The basic difference between VGA and HDMI technology, is that VGA is an analog technology and HDMI is digital. Analog signals are like a series of waves, while digital signals are essentially a series of zeros and ones. When a computer sends video through a VGA cable to an LCD monitor, it converts the computer's digital language to an analog language and then the monitor converts it back to digital again. So there should be no surprise that there is some degradation when the signal is being translated twice. In addition to this, analog cables can add distortion to the signal, if they are too long or improperly shielded. - http://techchannel.radioshack.com/noticeab...-hdmi-2174.html |

QUOTE(reevanshirls @ Mar 26 2014, 02:10 PM) Not wanting to jump the gun here - How far is the monitor away from your computer, and what monitor are you using? You should only start to be concerned if your VGA cable is long enough to acting like an antenna susceptible to external interference (eg RFI). Analogue cables by themselves do not add distortion to the signal, external interference more likely, unless the cable itself is not well built, where both issues can be simply resolved by buying a better cable. Digital to analogue solutions for monitors are very mature technology today thus degradation from converting these signals shouldn't be much of a concern, minute, if any. You do not have much of a choice here, unless you want to fork out for a HDMI switch of some sort. Which then you'd need to start worrying about additional stuff like whether the HDMI switch causes other issues i.e. distortion, another component which can fail, drivers/software issues, possible degradation of signal (yes even for digital, this is possible. Also error corrections are done using approximations) within the switch itself. Not sure if switches/splitters can support Extended monitor mode (instead of just duplicating) as well - You'll need to find out. Well, you could always experiment since you have the added advantage of accessing both platforms. How much does VGA cables cost nowadays anyway, unless you're running long lengths of them. You can compare between HDMI and VGA yourself and see if you'd notice any difference. For my case, I run 3 monitors at home and 2 from my laptop, for movies, gaming, and programming work with more than 12 hours of viewing time every day, nada issues detected so far. PS: Note that the snippet you've provided assumes the luxury of choosing one between two connections - VGA vs HDMI/Digital. Hence "all else being equal" applied, which I do not think applies to you, given that those are the only two connections you have. |

What is the purpose of you getting 2 monitors anyway? if its not for gaming, you can still get the 2 monitors and get a fairly cheap desktop for running 2/3 monitors.
if you're not willing to change the laptop, the best choice available is the vga and hdmi port. |

QUOTE What is the purpose of you getting 2 monitors anyway? To annswer your question:- 1. To increased productivity. 2. To be able to use multiple programs simultaneously. 3. So that I can keep my Email (outlook) up on one screen. 4. To be able to Skype while still having access to other programs or data. 5. Also for easier comparison, with browser to browser, excel and word. QUOTE If its not for gaming, you can still get the 2 monitors and get a fairly cheap desktop for running 2/3 monitors. Well bro, I don’t need a desktop, I have a perfectly functioning laptop, and also if I may add – a perfectly functioning HDMI display port. The one thing, that is confusing me, is that I only have one available HDMI display port, which is exactly right beside my VGA display port. Problem here is, if the VGA cable is plugged in, the HDMI would not be able to fit into the HDMI display port because it’s blocked by the VGA cable head. I think I’m just going to use the HDMI display port to connect it to one monitor, and with a USB 3.0 to HDMI to another monitor. Well both are 1080p. |
