Hi guys! I am an expat working here and I drive an H-Line AT Black Gen2. So far, everything I've heard about Gen2 is true. It accelerates quite fast. Also, the windows are easily rattled, creating an annoying rattling sound when the road is rough. This is even if the car is just came out of the dealer.

Anyway, I also want to point out how I find driving in the city area (KL/PJ). Before I got my car, I already noticed that most Malaysian drivers lack common road courtesy and defensive driving. I told myself I should brace myself for whatever would happen on the road. When I started driving (which was two weeks ago) here, I have noticed the following:

1. Most tend to tailgate, leaving very little room between one's front bumper and the rear bumper of the car in front. To those guilty of this, you should know that to maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front of you (during a stand still/jam), make sure that you can still see the two rear tires of the car in front. If you don't see them anymore, you are way too close already.

2. NOBODY slows down in an intersection even if the car crossing from either side already has the right of way. By right of way, I mean that more than half of the car's body is already in the intersection or have already crossed the X in the intersection.

3. Almost everybody switches lanes even if the car on the lane to be switched to has not completely passed yet. I observe this commonly among small cars, which keep on weaving in and out of traffic, thinking probably, they are small so nobody will be bothered. Completely wrong.

4. NOBODY stops to let a pedestrian cross.

5. Almost nobody stops at the exact time the traffic light turns red. A moron even honked at me for stopping at the red light. The nerve of the guy.

I've some more observations, which I will put some other time. Anyway, I thought this kind of driving behavior is only observable among taxi drivers. However, even those who are driving the more expensive cars - BMW, Mercedes, etc. drive as I have observed. This just goes to show that money can buy you fast cars but it cannot buy class and common courtesy.

I hope you guys will take my criticisms constructively.

Wow, our overseas friend really posted things that i also dislike... And about the ppl crossing bit, i usually stop to let most ppl go (especially when there is a traffic light, best way to control cars approaching the zebra crossing!)...

Btw, how long have u been here in Malaysia, juan? And from his nick, he could be Hispanic or Spanish?

I've been in Malaysia for almost two months now but I've been visiting KL for over a year (until my company decided that it would be more cost efficient and effective if I stay put here). I am from the Philippines, of mixed origins I would say. Nobody here could guess I am from the Phils until I say so.

I'm glad that most of you agree with my observations. I came from a country where driving manners are also terrible. Man, my blood pressure always rises a notch higher when driving in Phils. I cannot say which country between Malaysia and PHilippines has a better driving environment. The drivers/owners of private cars in Philippines are more courteous (except the hired family drivers) compared to here. The Philippine bus drivers are the worst in the world - no exaggerating. Imagine a huge bus just shifting to your lane without any signal and with little clearance and then going back to its original lane in a flash. Try this - a huge bus running at almost 180Kph trying to overtake you in a two-lane country road. You get the picture.

However, the roads here in Malaysia are way, way, way, way much better compared to the Philippines (being a 3rd world country). Back home, I almost never drive my sedan car out of town, especially if I am not sure of the road condition. I would normally take my ever-reliable and tough pick up truck, which can handle any road condition. Here, it's smooth sailing from the city at least until Melaka (the farthest I've been so far).

Anyway, so as not to veer too far away from the topic, let me ask about something on Gen2. My wife and I would like to change the rims but my sales agent told me that if I change them, the warranty could get void. Is this true? Are there shops that accept trade-ins for rims? My car is just less than a month old and I just don't want to throw away the rims that came with it.

Also, I told my agent of my intention to set up my car's audio system - nothing fancy - just an amplifier, a subwoofer and tweeters. Again, he said this may void my warranty. Is this really true? Thanks for the tips and for responding to my post.

Anyway the points u have given are true and im sure it happen to most of us before so we have been use to it.. i guess ur still new in malaysia so u must need some time to get use to it:). please do continue drving with safety and coutesy in mind and im sure with more people like u around, it will brush off to other drivers.

Hey bro. Thanks for having a positive take on my post. I haven't had the chance to drive to Singapore but someday I might go to take my wife shopping. I've been to Singapore many times and I think you are right when you said that drivers there are also "not so nice." Here, I think the drivers are more patient. In SG, I have noticed that they are so impatient.

I'm used to "crazy driving" since I came from Manila, Philippines. I guess I was just a bit caught off guard with the way many people drive here. I was expecting that like most developed cities, the drivers are more careful.

I enjoy driving my Gen2. I am satisfied with the acceleration and handling and boy, it really looks good. I live in an apartment where most of the cars parked are of European manufacture but still, the few Gen2s there still stand out. I jsut hate the sound of rattling window. Do you guys experience this? Have you done something about it? (You know, excpet, playing loud music not to hear the rattling .)

Hey i let people cross 1st in pedestrian crosssing line........ btw... 1 more advice... if u tend to be in an accident... pls becareful..... u see the driver 1st.. if he is those gangster type or fierce looking type.... just careful and call the police if needed... and if are those mat-rempit..mostly they are in group racing around with they motorbike... be more careful.... if u think is their fault straight go to police station and report.. do not stop.....
*
I'm sorry for the hasty conclusion. OK, I actually observed some drivers who let people cross first. Thanks for the tips, bro. I'll keep these in mind. I just hope I'm familiar enough with the roads so I would know the nearest polis station in case something like you described happens.

changing rims to a aftermarket ones do not void your overall warranty. but then, if a part e.g. bush, arb, suspension and any wheel related parts are faulty (either by coincidence or due to negligence of the installer), your warranty for these parts may have some problem. It then depends on how you talk ur way out for a free replacement/repair.

Setting up a car audio does risk voiding ur warranty as it's not only involves the interior of ur car but also electrical parts. A electrical short due to "wire testing" cud cause the ECU to go cranky and if this is discovered by the SC, then you can wave ur hard earned $$ bye bye.

There are million of ways where those blood-suckers to void your warranty but then, there's still parts and stuff you can replace and add on. It all depends on the installer, I would say. A lil' of luck and ur installer is good, you'll enjoying wat u've just got into your car. Or else, it wud be endless trips to the SC not forgetting those headaches and frustrations.

So pick ur installer wisely and cheap things ain't a good thing, sometime.

cheers.

Speaking of police station, where is your apartment located, bud? You're in PJ or KL, btw?

And its nice to hear that you're enjoying your Malaysian ride so far... I love this car for its superb acceleration and wonderful handling (the G2 cuts corners very well!) but as for the window, i get this weird windtunnel-like sound coming in, especially when driving long distance... Apparently the lady boss of my regular service center said that its a common occurence... Is that true?

I'm near Bangsar. I found a police station over the weekend - in Jalawi Telawi4.

Anyway, regarding the window, somebody told me that generally, all Proton cars have a problem with windows.

I'm planning to get an amplifier, subwoofer, tweeters and new rims from eneos. I feel relieved to know that I'm not the only who actually experienced a rattling window. Also, it's good to know that it can be fixed.

Just a question guys: From where I come from, it is a standard safety precaution to check the water in the radiator every now and then (and to bring reserve water in the car). Is it the same here? Here, I have observed that all of my colleagues did not check their radiator before going on a long trip. I am not sure but could this be because most people here are dependent on coolants? I read that part of the regular maintenance is the replacement/draining of coolant. Thanks again guys!

Well, what brands are u considering? I'm also planning on changing my front speakers as well... They recommended the JBL speakers which are going on promotion (somehow i forgot the price blush.gif), with labor charges bundled!

As for rattling window, mine was due to a faulty bracket... The motor which burned out when my bro was driving the car had been replaced since then... Luckily i changed the bracket (setting me back by RM80) before i went out of town last weekend...

I'm very partial to Kicker since I have used them before and I am happy with the performance. If you have other brands that you can recommend, I'd be happy to hear them.

On the rattling window, I have yet to have it checked out. Hopefully, I would be able to send my car to the SC this week (before I drive it to Penang during the Hari Raya holiday).
