I'm looking for a laptop for work purposes, using mostly Microsoft office and occasional usage for cad and photoshop. Will be bringing it along for daily usage.

Want a reliable laptop with good after sales service, 3 years warranty is necessary.

Budget will be around 4k.

Is it necessary for me to look for business laptops or normal home units will do?

Thanks.

normal home units will do. to add, they offer better specs as well, especially for your photoshop and cad use.

Dell
Inspiron 15 7000, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M (GDDR5) + (1920x1080; Touch)@RM3599[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8SL, backlit keyboard, 58Whr

Lenovo
Y510p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT755M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080)@RM3399[2.7kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8.1, red backlit, swappable ODD, 120w psu, 2 yrs

Z510, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GT740M@RM2799[2.2kg], 4GB, 1TB, backlit, W8; 2 yrs

Acer
V7-582PG-74508G52k, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M + 24GB mSATA + 500GB HDD + (1920x1080 IPS; touch)@RM3399[2.2kg], 8GB, W8

HP
Envy Touchsmart 15-J053TX, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080;touch)@RM3499[2.56kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8

prices in RRP and negotiable. my best vote goes for Z510 if your cad and photoshop isnt intensive, Y510P if you are intense.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Agree that the specifications for home use laptops is always better than the business laptops of the same price range. But will there be any significant differences in terms of reliability and built?

Have used a couple of home used laptops before this, but they does not last too long. Was told by my friend to go for business laptops instead, such as thinkpad. But the price variance is quite huge for similar specs. Are they worth the extra money?

Thanks

Hello guys, i've been looking for a new laptop for a while now. Will be using it mainly for work, such as office applications, cad, and occasional photoshop usage. Need something that is portable and not hence must not be too heavy. I've shortlisted the following models for now:-
- Thinkpad T440p
- Thinkpad S440
- Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro
- HP Zbook 14
- Dell Latitude E7440

From the above list, which will be the best option to go for? Hope to get some advice or opinion on this.

Thanks guys.

among the laptops you listed, my vote goes for HP Zbook 14 and select the spec that comes with the AMD Firepro graphics card. it is very beneficial for your cad usage.

but if lets say your cad usage isnt very intense, you can go for Lenovo Thinkpad T440P. best to go for this spec :

Lenovo ThinkPad T440, i7-4200U + Nvidia GT720M (1600x900) + 16GB mSATA + 1TB HDD@RM4799, 8GB, W7P+W8P, 2x (3-cell), 3 years

You mean the T440 or T440p? Those 2 are around the same price range but the performance for the T440p should be slightly better as it comes with an M processor and GT730M. But T440 will be lighter and more portable.

The reviews for the Zbook 14 is generally quite good but I've not seen it in real life before, hence not too sure how's the experience of the keyboard and touchpad. Specs wise it's quite good though.

both the T440 and T440p sports about the same weight (albeit 0.1lb lighter on the T440p) but T440 will be more power efficient due to the ULV processor used.

actually, i hardly saw a workstation laptop, as it is very rare and less resellers selling it so i dont even know how does it perform in real life.

The T440 is actually the lighter one at about 1.8kg as it is dubbed as an ultra book. But at that size and weight it doesn't really feels like one. The T440p is heavier at around 2.2kg, but overall specs is on par or better than the T440, weight will be the main downside.

Not too sure is 2.2kg ok for constant travelling, sounds a bit heavy nowadays, lol.

i'd suggest to go for lighter ones if you constantly travel, or it will be really pain in the ass.
another alternative way is keep do shoulder work outs to strengthen your shoulder, so you can be a tough guy. laugh.gif

Have been researching for a while, but can't really decide which to go for. All has their pros and cons, lol.

Hey guys, need some advice and recommendations from you all.

1. Need a brand with good service support
2. Budget around 4.5k
3. For office and home use, some light photoshop and cad usage, not into gaming
4. Prefer 13 or 14 inch screen, but screen quality must be good, preferably full hd
5. Prefer thin and light models, not more than 1.9kg
6. Comfortable keyboard and touchpad is a must, as the main purpose is for work. Durable structure is important as well cause I'll be travelling with it most of the time.

Considering between the yoga 2 pro and the xps 13, any users of these 2 models can share some experience? Can suggest other models which will fit my criterias as well?

Thanks for the help guys.

I have to disagree with raymond sifu on this haha laugh.gif
I've used both notebooks some time ago
The Yoga 2 Pro's resolution is too high and everything will appear very small, too small for most I think haha laugh.gif Though the 256GB is definitely very worth it
The XPS 13, on the other hand, is a true beast, one of the best ultrabooks out there if you ask me lol... it might be relatively heavier, but its extremely solid and ergonomic..
Only problem is the lack of ports  sweat.gif

Try to nego an XPS13 (should be able to get up to RM400 off if you are good at bargaining), and use remaining budget to extend warranty to 3 years. Maybe can just get the 256GB variant too lol

Yeah, agree that the yoga 2 pro seems more value for money. Specs is generally better than the i5 xps 13 but the price is lower.

Personally prefer the design of the xps 13, but read reviews that it may have heat and sound issue. Hence can't decide which to go for. Would like to get a laptop with full hd display, but can't think of much choices apart from these 2.
