in Redang.... Think better i wait for MIDE . Better i start with mask and fins but still unsure which one suit me. :s
How to know the range?
*
Which dive center in Redang?

Mask can try on at dive shops. See which one fits your face and your budget, and make sure can easily press your nose to equalize.

Fins got many types, as ^ said, depends on your how strong your leg is.

Lost my chapalang dive cam in my night dive at raypoint and lobster lair in Mabul island...  cry.gif

But I manage to pick up 2 torches from my morning dives ...  rclxms.gif

If can, I rather give back 2 torches to get back my dive cam...  sweat.gif here's goes "missing" with my videos/pictures of my dive trip in Sibuan, Mantabuan and Kulapuan
*
Better than me lost 2 fin straps, a torch and *almost* my dive comp.

Today spent almost RM300 on Tibby Adapter Suunto D9 strap and RM50 to get a replacement fin strap. rclxub.gif

Did you see anything interesting underwater at least? biggrin.gif

I was lucky the DM was very helpful. On the dive that I broke the 2nd fin strap, he passed me his fin and he did the dive with 1 fin. laugh.gif

If you manage the skills and knowledge, diving is pretty safe.
Most diver dead on human error & equipment malfunction i guess.
*
That's true. Plus a lot of them are mostly overconfident and miss out the safety protocols.

QUOTE(AIAF @ Mar 31 2014, 07:24 PM)
Hey guys, doing my OWD at Redang soon (enjoyed my confined water lessons a lot!). Got a few questions, hope you guys can help.

1) If I get a rashguard and pair it with a swim trunk, that's good enough right?

2) Considering to get my own subscription mask cause sometimes my contact lens just refuses to cooperate especially in the mornings. Anything in particular to keep in mind when purchasing?

3) I have a couple of leisure dives after my exam. Planning to rent an underwater cam. What type of camera do they usually provide? Advisable for beginners to handle during diving? (I do play with some photography as a hobby)

Thanks!
*
1. Get a board shorts too. Cheap only. Brands Outlet selling for RM30-40 or so I think. Or if you wanna go in swimming trunks also can, more sexy that way I guess.

2. Nothing much. Just get the correct prescription lens. The shop you go to will know what to advice you.

3. Not advisable. You'll need to have better buoyancy before handling a camera. I'm not sure what underwater camera are available for rent though, you have to check with the hotel then.

3)during OWD, dont bother bout the camera, heck you wont even remember what you have seen, most of the time adjusting the bcd (that's me) lolz ... and concentrating on the Instructor.

have fun buddy
*
I can't remember what I see during my certification and leisure dives during my OW trip either. I only remember getting blisters from the full foot fins and having terrible buoyancy biggrin.gif

Am going to Langkawi around mid this month. Is diving there recommended? I found two dive operator but their website is not updated for years. I need more info to contact them. Been quite some time since my last dive.
*
Langkawi, dived with Pro Dive before. Boss name Andrew, contact him directly via email. Nice people but dives so-so only. Rather spend my time baking myself on the beach. Check back I think the V2 thread, got quite some info on Langkawi there, one of the forumers (can't remember who) worked in langkawi for quite some time.

Hi Divers!

Mind to share about average tips for the guides/ boat man in different locations?
*
Depending on how happy I am with the dive guides, how cheap the dive was and whether I'll go back or not also. Boatman usually it'll be in the pool tip for the dive center and the guides will give them individually.

Thanks for the info. How much did he charge you previously? Do you remember what is the place of the dive site? I did some research, saying Pulau Segantang is the best?
*
Errr don't remember. The dives are done at Pulau Payar. Full day trip of 2 dives inclusive of lunch. I'll have to check back the old threads. If not mistaken, I've posted the price there before. The sites I went to was coral garden, house reef, sunken ship and sponge reef. This was back in January 2012.

You guys mentioned about tipping boats man or DM.
Just want to know, is this an unspoken culture/courtesy? Would like to understand more on this culture..

Thanks in advance.
*
For me, it's a yes too. I don't usually tip boatmen unless I find them really good. But I do usually tip the DM and/or dive center.

It's not mandatory to tip.

QUOTE(botterjr @ Apr 4 2014, 09:35 PM)
oo. hmm.
So when do you usually tip them, at the end of the trip ?

Also you mentioned 0-5%-10%, what does that mean? mind elaborating?

1 more thing, do you tip as a group or as individual, just curious.

many thanks. smile.gif
*
At the end of the trip of course. If I go alone, I'll tip as an individual. If go as a group, will have a group tip and if anyone wanna tip the DM individually, are free to do so.

You could say the average is possibly 5-15% of the total dive bill.
