IMO, there is no such thing as the "best OS" because every OS has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Very subjective question. Everyone has their own liking.

For instance, if you're not ready to experience the new Metro layout, avoid Windows 8.

I think we haven't come to a stage where there is everything good under one roof yet in technology broadly and it apply to OS as well. There maybe things one OS can do better than the other, hence for the more technology savvy, they may install a few OS and switch among those. On some occasion, there may also be a need to just quickly power up a device and send a mail or check some website, with this people may want just a stripped down Linux with minimum resources to start up. And OS also like other technologies is still evolving, we haven't reach a stage where things are considered more or less good enough and things start to stabilize in their growth, that's things like IPv4 now converting to IPv6, HTML starting to transition to HTML5, we will always have new OS coming in and processor speed I believe still increase every so number of months according to that principle etc.

*nix based os is gaining momentum as the big two are now churning out OpenGL/CL drivers more often than before.

I personally am finally able to enjoy gaming on linux.. (xubuntu) specifically.

I like the interface and I can also work easily and faster on linux than on windows (workflow with terminals/customization to make your life much easier)
