If you are tech savvy, and no one else is using he unit, get a htpc.

If there are less tech savvy ppl, eg. your gf, old parents, will be using the unit, buy a media player is better.

it is easy to to get confused. not common someone has tried htpc, android, media player, hypptv, abnxcess, etc... all of them. all of them have threads here, u can read them first...

so, it is better you describe in detail what you r looking for and what u already have...

.. what tv, what home theater sys or nothing yet...?
.. What broadband n speed you hv?
.. want superhd, hd, sd, any d...?
.. english only, chinese only, local tv only, german, korean, sports..?
.. movies or tv series or...??
... will pay for some channels or want all foc?

if u describe all of that, many experienced peopl shud b able to help u better.

(btw himedia q5ii cost <rm350.)

TV - 3d full HD smart tv , sharps latest model
Broadband - unifi 5mb
Sould be super HD cos tv can support till 1080p
English , Chinese ,sport I prefer
Movie and drama too.

If getting HTPC I no need waste money to buying bluray player is it ?

Too many feature for android box and HTPC , that why I confuse for this 2 .

yr tv is good. assume u do not have hometheater/avr, so audio less impt?
unifi 5mb is good enough for most purposes but i m less sure if u try to stream the biggest files.

to my knowledge, htpc is essentially a pc connected to a tv. if you have the right pc hardware, it will be the most powerful thing u can have incl streaming and playback all kinds of stuff. only thing is a pc/notebook will cost more.

android boxes and sticks, appletvs and the like are really dedicated "mini-pcs" designed to do specific functions of video/audio streaming, games, file playback. cheaper, less bulky but may not function as well as htpc for certain things. e.g. xbmc will run well on a pc but not as well on a himedia due to the support arrangements. however, for say, chinese stuff, a pc with xbmc may not be able to access certain sites due to protocols and ip restrictions. but if u know enough of bypass/mask/prioxies, it can be done, i suppose.

i wud think if u have the budget, prefer more english than anything else, go for a htpc. if u tend to go for chinese stuff, something like himedia is more useful. u must hv read posts made by people either selling or recommending certain stick/boxes/tv packages - you should explore all of them, at least to know what each one does, if they will suit yr needs.

about bluray... the word "bluray" means diff things to diff people. "bluray" can be br discs, untouched br iso, m2ts, br ripped, etc. a bluray player is for playing br discs, new models can play most media files via usb port. htpc surely can handle these if you have the right hardware installed. higher grade androids with usb ports can handle br files playback even 3d besides streaming. how well it can stream hd stuff depends on the box/stick itself.

there is no one solution that fits all. there is no machine right now that you can buy at reasonable price, plug in and play everything. my view is technology is changing very fast, gotta start somewhere. as new products get into the marlet, we upgrade according to our needs. my own history is a very long one... lps->cds->lds->dvds->bds->media player->android. wud be nice to see the arrival of a plug n play super android the size and cost of an ipadmini that can stream almost everything on earth in 1080p video and dtshdma audio! biggrin.gif
