I watched all of Yasmin Ahmad's productions. Oh man, I miss that woman. Urmmm other than that, it would be really depending on whether they are worth the money to go and watch it at the cinemas. I watched KL Gangster and its sequel at the cinemas too.

Otherwise, I will always wait for festive seasons to watch them.

The list of local movies I have watched:

1) all Yasmin Ahmad's
2) KL Gangster 1 and 2;
3) Ombak Rindu;
4) Lagenda Budak Setan;
5) One of Namewee's movies on cooking if i remember correctly?
6) some P Ramlee's productions
7) Bukit Kepong
8) XX Ray and its sequels
9) Senario (HAHAHAHAHA)

So, do you and what have you watched? IF you dont, why?

Yes I watch local movies, too many to list down I guess?

If I were to 'introduce' malaysian movies to someone not familiar with local cinema, some recent titles I would recommend:

Bunohan
Songlap
Yasmin Ahmad movies (my favorite are Talentime, Rabun, Sepet)
Kabir Bhatia movies ~ Setem, Cinta, Sepi
Kami (incidentally, all movies that titled Kami are good tongue.gif ~ 1982, 2008 and the recent Kami Histeria)
Budak Kelantan
Puteri Gunung Ledang

I actually prefer to go by directors, at least there's some assurance that the movie won't go wrong tongue.gif . My favorite directors:

B&W era: P. Ramlee, Hussein Haniff
Kabir Bhatia
Mamat Khalid
Dain Said
U-Wei Shaari
Afdlin Shauki ~ hit and miss. Buli 1 & 2, Baik Punya Cilok are good ones
Saw Tiong Hin
Amir Muhammad
Rashid Sibir
Osman Ali ~ hit and miss. I like Anak Halal but I hate Ombak Rindu
Hafsham ~ Mekanik, Soal Hati, (Karipap-Karipap Cinta was terrible tho)
Aziz M Osman ~ earlier movies: XX Ray 1 & 2, Senario 2 & 3 (yess, Senario movies surprisingly smile.gif)). Unfortunately after Lagi-Lagi Senario, no Senario movie is worth watching)
Khir Rahman
James Lee ~ (I don't like Beautiful Washing Machine tho)
Ho Yu Hang
Erma Fatima
Woo Ming Jin ~ (don't like KL Zombie tho)
Bernard Chauly

Chiu Keng Guan will probably be on my favorite list very soon (I haven't watched The Journey yet. I liked Great Day but not so on Woohoo)

True that most (current) local movies are crap, but I also hate people that dismiss them entirely, apparently they are missing the gems that would come out once in a while.

Nowww despite the big budgets, (including Merong Mahawangsa and Vikingdom) most of KRU movies are in the 'crap' list. No offence. The only one that is ok to me is Magika.

Cicakman is a kind of hit and miss, there are some witty elements that I like (e.g. the city named Metrofulus and few other details, reminded me of P Ramlee quirkiness of naming convention like Isketambola, Kalabul Malami (Kelab Malam).. etc). But the overall execution is not original. You can go ahead and watch it and judge yourself smile.gif

The original title was "Perempuan, Isteri dan Jalang" = "Woman, Wife and Whore" (now don't you think the title is so intriguing?). But thanks to the censorship jadi dot dot dot laugh.gif. This is one of U-Wei's masterpiece.

Recent censorship on words is not as strict as before (Shuhami Baba got away with Harum Sundal Malam in 2004 and there's another movie titled Jalang in late 2000s <--- is a stupid movie I don't want to remember the details lols.).

But "... Dalam Botol" (originally "Anu Dalam Botol") also got similar axe ~ <-- and hey btw this is Khir Rahman's directional debut that is so underrated. I absolutely agree with this review: http://thatmoviebloggerfella.blogspot.com/...tempurung.html).

Ermmm not gonna happen because it is banned laugh.gif (racial clash was a sensitive issue or something?? Anyways FINAS always known to make stupid decisions). It is actually a good movie.

So it becomes an indie movie and released on DVD.

(note: You probably know Namron as an actor? Many people don't know that he directed quite a number of movies already but almost all are banned laugh.gif. His only movie that made it to wayang is Psiko Pencuri Hati)

Oh yes. There must be a reason why it surpassed RM15 million box office (I bet David Teoh and KRU and Shamsul Yusof are scratching heads right now hahaha).

On a bright note, judging from the trends, I welcome to see more movies like this in coming years (after KL Gangster made it big last time, all producers want to produce gangster movies).

I am waiting for the DVD as I don't have time to go to cinema nowadays..

Yep, Bunohan made quite an impression to international audience. Just read all the rave reviews about how good it is. Here? Tak balik modal laugh.gif

What do you think of Hantu Kak Limah? Actually you need to have a certain set of mind when watching Mamat Khalid's movies ~ he's a master of parody and you would want to find the hidden meaning and social criticisms behind his seemingly slapstick comedies!

Hantu Kak Limah is part of a trilogy: 'Zombi Kampung Pisang', 'Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah' and 'Husin, Mon and Jin Pakai Toncit'

Quite a fan of local movies eh you? hahaha...

whatever you said are really news to me. I didnt know anything at all on this anu lah.. jalang lah... hahaha thanks for the info.

Hmmm... i have never heard of namron too. lol

I reckon that movies with horror and gangsters them sell these days. Hence, everyone is making such films. Can't blame those producers though because at the end of the day, profit matters.

Not even remotely related hahaha ~ i'm just a regular movie buff. I like to watch movies and think about them. And because I'm not particularly good at articulating myself I like to read other people's reviews/books smile.gif

maybe because Malaysia's lack of independent critics? and there's no proper award from a proper governing body in local film industry. all awards in Malaysia are for syok sendiri only. so, there's lack of seriousness in movie making. yet, there's still certain movie maker who does not have the opportunity to bring forward his/her art because of lack of funding and the politics in the production houses in Malaysia. just my view though.
