TLDR; first time wrting here, wrote a post about it but copying here to get more comments Hi guys. I am 20 years old this year and currently finishing my Year 1 degree, Bachelor of Business & Commerce at Monash University Malaysia. I will have to choose two business major for my Year 2 and I had narrowed down them to APPLIED ECONOMICS, ECONOMETRICS, MARKETING, BUSINESS ANALYTICS, FINANCE but I am still trying to keep my option open as I wish to know thoughts or views from the others or experienced netizes (you guys). I am a guy who overthinks easily, so please bear with me for those random thoughts, I will be also sharing some of my stories down there. Before that, I would like to do some introduction about myself. My parents are doing stationery and photostat business nearby a polytechnic school. I consider myself as a quite above average student. I took SPM science stream in 2016 and got 8As. Then, I got AAC (Economics, Psychology,Maths) for my A-levels. During that time, I was performing not that well in Pure Math especially in trigonometrics and some a little bit complicated intergration topic, but I am still doing okay with statistics and have some interest towards it, that is why I know myself is not an Engineering material and eventually joined business. During my first semester in university, I got HD (high distinction) for Introductory Microeconomics and D for Psychology, Marketing and Management (All were introductory level). I just finished my second semester final recently and I was taking Macroeconomics, Business Law, Accounting for Managers and Economic and Business Statistics, results is to be released in 15th of July. Below are some of my personal thoughts and opinions about those majors. Of course, anyone of you can correct or educate me because these are only my thoughts and I know they can be come from a very restricted point of view. Applied Economics is one of my favorite subject. It is interesting and related to our daily life. It is abstract, philosophical, theoretical yet practical in a sense (I really like something like this) However, this is also its weakness. I have read some forums online and people say I will have to deal with many theoretical and abstract model first in Economics before proceeding to a model that is practical enough in the real world. I have did it during my A-Levels, and I might be scoring well in undergraduate level but I know I will have to proceed to Master level or even PHD to make money out of it if I chose this field and this is also the biggest reason my peer did not choose to major in it as it does not have very clear career pathway compared to other business major and it is too research-based. Business Analytics and Econometrics are mostly similar in my university and are known as the hardest major in school of business, and the students could not be majoring in both of them. I was planning to do either one of them for my major. Econometrics is better to be paired with Applied Economics and Business Analytics is better to be paired with Banking & Finance or Marketing. My best friends are going to do BA and they could keep me being competitive, however I heard that there is many positive feedback about Econometrics (my lecturer who taught me business and economic stat was an applied economics and econometrics student and he is really good, most of the best teachers I met actually studied Economics including my a level teacher and this actually impact me and encourage me to do econ in a way) Accounting & Finance is the most picked double major in my university (some Chinese stereotype issue here lol) ,but Accounting is definitely out of my choice because I took a non- Accounting major unit as the core unit. Many people actually encouraged me to take banking & finance, as it is a safer choice, although I have not taken any finance or banking unit, I doubt that I will have the interest because I have not touch any stock market or banking stuffs that related to finance. I tried to learn them online, but it was not that productive, this reminds me someone said only pay tuition fee for something you couldn’t learn yourself…On the other side, I am also afraid of missing out, because finance is still the most picked major in my university, and I believe there must be a reason behind it. If I take finance, I could still take professional papers ACCA or CFA like the accounting students and have a steady and stable career pathway (sometimes being conventional and choose the safest way is always the best because less risk is involved) But, go inside to the deep corporate world (banking, money, etc) seems is not aligned with my passion… Marketing, my initially plan for my university major, I have a lot of fantasies and dreams in this field but I don’t know whether my interest in Marketing is real. I am quite tech-savvy and interested in those creative business. For example, Grab, Socar, Lazada, Airasia. I feel excited seeing these logos and I thought that this field will be really fun and creative for me. But then, after seeing so many forum and post about university major online, and also according to my teacher, I should do some technical or specialize major first in university, because I could still do MBA if I am interested in learning Marketing. I also agree that Marketing as a university major is a bit generic and it has to be supported by another double major. Also, most marketing materials in Year 2 is about memorizing, and the usefulness of those materials might be only to a certain extent in the real marketing world. But, maybe, I could make better connection if I do marketing, and we know connection is also extremely important in university aside from academics materials that we learn. However, I am quite introvert and do not talk that much ( socially awkward sometimes) , which cause me to doubt whether I could perform well in Marketing ( or perhaps by learning Marketing I could push myself out of my comfort zone and beyond my limit because not developing a good social skill is my regret for years) Another point to be considered is that by learning Marketing, I could use it to help my parents business because now I have limited knowledge and exposure in Marketing, I wonder by doing it in undergraduate level can benefit me that great? In Summary, I would like to know what others think about my most suitable major in university. Maybe it is too personal and hard for people to understand in my context, but I am also trying to organize my thoughts by writing this while thinking what I should do in my future and knowing myself better. Choosing university major is just a stage in my life, but this decision could really make significant changes. Aside from what major to choose, I would also appreciate every valuable views including life advices from all of you. |
