Why do i keep getting "sorry the server is too busy to handle your request"?
I thought there was an upgrade recently to better handle more traffic but the situation remains the same.

Thanks, we are well aware of the load problems. I've come up with a caching solution and various performance improvements around the forum, but haven't fully tested and commited them to the server yet.
We are also working towards moving text indexing (needed for searching) and old posts out of the database, for improved speed and the flexibility to explore other improvements on the database side of things. |

QUOTE(Cruiser @ Jul 17 2006, 12:23 AM) Why do i keep getting "sorry the server is too busy to handle your request"? The server was upgraded back in December, and had an additional gig of ram added to it 2 months ago. I thought there was an upgrade recently to better handle more traffic but the situation remains the same. Although we have been constantly implementing new things to mitigate server load issues it has come to a time where anything short of a radical change in the backend will ensure of the scalability of the forum in the long run. For a perspectiveof the forum's growth, the number of new posts and topics per day has increased by 200% since May while PMs sent by members have increased by 300%. As with all large scale projects, it will take time so we thank you for your patience and support. |

We upgraded to a new server way back in December. We were targetting another upgrade towards the end of the year but a few unexpected things happened.
The site is serving considerably a higher number of visitors these days, last year this time we were serving 20,000 average daily, now its hovering close to 50,000. The last server upgrade cost was in excess of RM10k, the next one would be around the same. There are a lot of other costs to be covered as well (hosting etc) and this is still a FREE to use site. We only recoup a fraction of those costs via advertisments. We've stopped pruning (removing) posts like we did before. Apart from the Kopitiam and Trade Zone, we're not deleting old posts from the other sections of the forum as these archives contain valuable information that might be looked up by members sooner or later. The bigger the archive, the more load it takes for the server to search through it. We do monitor the server's performance almost all the time, and while there are peaks periods where the server crosses its limit and gives out a busy message, its occurance is still seldom and does not intefere with the site. We will continue to monitor the situation and decide on the best course of action from time to time. Rest assured that the problems will not get any worse then it currently is. |

i am happy with the current situation. it's not like the time before where LYN is constantly down
heck, a forum with not much adverts and still running smoothly despite its big number of members, isn't something anyone can complain |

for human = "save the earth"
for forumer = "save the LYN" forumers should work together to save LYN, if the servers able to upgrade when end of the year... |

Well here's a simple tip to help us out - Use the bump button rather than post a fancy 'bump' there.

i've noticed alot of unnecessary posts on "Successful trades List". maybe make an anouncement to the traders to clean up their posts and make it easier it to prune. a few are unaware they are suppose to post only once & edit/update it from time to time.
for those "aged" garage sales threads, maybe ask the sellers to edit all their previous BUMPS to "pls prune this post". a cleaned-up [WTS} thread is easier for new potential buyers to browse through. This post has been edited by acougan: Jul 25 2006, 01:47 PM |

now if you consider 50,000 users and out of which 80% are spammers or at least like to post irrelevant or unconstructive posts - we're actually incurring more load on the server.
heck, even reloading the site / page also incurs server load. |

I do face this problem too. But it is no big deal, I'm happy that the forum load really fast. The fasters ever I've ever surf. Anyway, this problem may create many double post. When I reply a thread, it says that server is busy. I didn''t submit the reply again but check if it's replied, and it's replied. Some of them will just re-submit the reply and there will be tons of double post.

LYN is fast because it is a local server. Pings to the server is about 11ms on average. Maybe we should all donate to LYN so that they could use the money to improve the site.

introducing the search engine > http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=Search&f=2
there is even a search box for each section/thread at the bottom left corner. We do have close to 50,000 odd members you know, even if 1% were to donate RM20 each, we'd have RM10k, but we're trying to balance out between having a good free site with minimal advertisments. Donations are only as a last resort. The current ads you see do cover most of our cost and help with purchasing new servers, however servers are expsive and the "tabung" was broken only in December to get a new one! So do bare with the current load spikes, it isn't that critical yet, we're already getting ourselves ready to break the "tabung" again. |
