Not surprisingly.

The rumor is coming from Taiwanese contacts claiming that TSMC, the foundry that produces chips for Nvidia, is not prepared for a full-on 20nm chip production run.
.

28nm -> 20nm is a bit of a leap and to have that commendable 'sales' figure of 20nm 800 Series is going to be extremely challenging as it seems.

A release year to 2015 is much more sensible instead of saying late 2014.

Expect more Maxwell 28nm releases this year.

So news (old anyways) is that Q4 2014 - GTX 880/870 but 28nm, GM204. Sounds good considering Nvidia would like to have something going for Holidays 2014. I think the "Maxwell" architecture is going to be a bit of a sales trickery for now. Early adopters comes to mind.

Only sometime in 2015 we will see the 'real' Maxwell on 20nm in its full glory. 20nm Maxwell... it's going to be GTX 480 availability all over again. sweat.gif

GeForce GTX 880 and GeForce GTX 870 To Launch in Early October – GeForce GTX 860 Hits Market In Late October

QUOTE
NVIDIA’s next generation Maxwell core architecture based GeForce GTX 880, GeForce GTX 870 and GeForce GTX 860 will launch in October this year, as reported by GDM.OR.JP. The site which is part of one of the most major hardware retailers in Japan have been pretty accurate with their earlier leaks so we will assume that the October launch time-frame is quite accurate considering the launch was planned for Q4 2014 was narrowed down to October / November a few weeks ago and now we have a much more accurate schedule of NVIDIA’s Maxwell GPU launches.

The first two Maxwell cards to launch in the consumer market would be the high-performance GeForce GTX 880 and GeForce GTX 870. These cards will feature the GM204 core architecture which is the successor of the GK104/GK114 core from the Kepler generation. From little things we know thanks to the leaked PCB shot of NVIDIA’s alleged GeForce GTX 880 graphics card, we come to know that the core being used for the sample variant was GM204-INT41684-A1 however there has been a little variation in the codename and it is now called GM204-CS0-A1 (note that the CS stands for Consumer Sample) which means that final testing is under way and the chip will soon end up in the consumer market as the GeForce GTX 880. The chip is also the first of four variants which will make their way to the rest of the lineup including the GeForce GTX 870.

The GeForce GTX 870 on the other hand will be a cut down variant of the GK204 core featured on GeForce GTX 880 with some disabled SMM (Streaming Multiprocessor Maxwell) units.

Soon after launch, NVIDIA is expected to launch a third Maxwell graphics card aiming the more budget and gaming crowd, known as the GeForce GTX 860. The spiritual successor of NVIDIA’s most sold GeForce GTX 660 and GTX 760 graphics cards is said to enter the market in late October at a price point of around $299 US. Specifications and details are not known about this part but if the SKUs rumor is taken into consideration, then the GeForce GTX 860 might also end up with the GM204 core rather the GM206 core which is believed to end up with GTX 850 Ti and such parts. The rest of the lineup would be a mix of GM107 and GK208 chips. NVIDIA will not introduce a new low-end chip for a long time and hence they have chosen to rename their entry-level GK108 chip, GK208.

Can't wait for the 'Grand Finale' (August 17) at Gamescom 2014. Nvidia will finally reveal the GTX 880!

Here's hoping the wait has been worthwhile... didn't touch the 700 series in the hopes of going from Kepler to Maxwell.

Dude, Where's The Desktop 800 Series Maxwell Announcement at Gamescom 2014 'Grand Finale'?

There is none.

So, it's September 10-12 2014.

But here's a rocking news...

Nvidia GTX Titan II Flagship with GM200 Core Is Launching Sooner Than Expected – Ready Within 2 Months

QUOTE
Before the first ‘CS’ entry which appeared on 12th August 2014, there had only been entries using the nomenclature ‘INT’ which means the core is meant for Internal Testing. Because green follows the same pattern we knew that once the INT chips were spotted the CS chips wouldn’t be that far behind and it looks like our waiting has paid off because the chips with the name GM200-CS0-A1 and GM200-CS1-A1 have been spotted, indicating that the GPU is now more or less ready. This core will have double the performance per watt of the GK110 core (as can be seen from the research paper) and we should see an amazing leap in gaming performance from 204 to 200. So the jump from Titan to the Titan II is shaping out to be pretty cool.

The GTX Titan II (or whatever it is called) should give you a minimum of 50% performance increase in Gaming in real life settings, seeing we are looking at a 100% boost in on-paper performance. Considering the fact that the research paper by Nvidia also claimed that the Titan II would be out before the end of 2014 means that the time line for this GPU is now more or less confirmed. I believe we are looking at a 2 Month launch window considering the history of the GM204 core.  That would put the the launch of the GM200 GPU somewhere around November, unless Nvidia manages to pull one on us and launch alongside GM204.

That MSI TwinFrozr V card looks insane! drool.gif

I think the performance gains are not that significant compared to say the 780 Ti. The 980M however - - is ridiculous, almost 200% gain!

I expected a lot more... perhaps GM210 is the real deal in 2015 that is...

Power efficiency though, is definitely something.

Right on... the GTX 970 when OC, will come close to the GTX 980. The price difference between GTX 970 SLI vs. GTX 980 totally justifiable with the performance gain of the former.

Shed manly tears... cry.gif

I think the upgrade from a 680 -> 970 is worth it when its almost 2x the performance.

The reason I skipped the 700 series? Waiting for Maxwell. tongue.gif

Hmm... am thinking of waiting it out for now. Heard a higher memory version coming end of the year, might pick it up with a hopefully 'affordable-not-too-crazy-expensive' 4k resolution display. Not too sure if my i7 870 oc'd to 4GHz is going to bottleneck, already seem like maxing it out with my 680. I'll see... no hurry for an upgrade as my machine is holding up just fine.

Anyone with a GTX980/970 or a 6GB VRAM card played 'Shadow of Mordor' with HD Texture Pack + Ultra Textures turned on? sweat.gif

I tried it on my 'now' merely mortal GTX680 2G, and it is a slide-show fest at 1080p about 40-50% of the time.

Well, I've read how some gamers are freaking out and calling it BS without actually downloading the HD Texture Pack in the first place since it recommends 6GB VRAM for Ultra.

That said, they have discovered that, 'Shadow of Mordor' will use at most 3.7Gb of VRAM (at 1080p) in Ultra.

I am waiting patiently for the rumored 8GB GTX980... no idea if it will ever benefit a mere 1920x1080 display or that my i7-870 (OC'd to 4Ghz) will bottleneck.

Yeyyah... 8GB variant of the GTX970/980 tongue.gif -- more tempting than ever to go Maxwell. Should have a GTX 980 Ti too (384bit bus width perhaps), maybe Q1 2015.

I know Nvidia will be cooking up 22nm Maxwell sometime in 2015... a long long wait. I'm confident Maxwell has a lot of magic yet to be revealed.

Also waiting for Maxwell's "Titan" (supposedly called "Titan II" GPU), not that I am going to ever buy, but just want to see some crazy high benchie scores and Nvidia's marketing of 'the most powerful card ever made' which I always enjoy.

Hmm... since DSR was introduced into the drivers, I have been trying some of my current games to use 4k resolution; thus far only "F1 2014" (benchmark at 1080p: average 101fps, at 4k: average 40fps) and "Diablo III" the smoothest.

Recently tried 4k on "CoD: AW", it almost does it, but there is a constant 'loading'; possibly due to my 680's 2G memory buffer limitation, it is however smooth sailing at 1080p.

Here's hoping that the upcoming 970/980 with higher VRAM would be (finally) be a worthwhile upgrade to my 680 2G.

how does your GTX680 with 2GB VRAM perform for CODAW?

mine was constantly being bombarded with 'Windows have detected you do not have enough memory bla bla"

crashes CODAW afterwards

and how long does it took for you to load a map?
*
At 1920x1080 FXAA, it runs exceptionally well, can say no major hitches or slowdowns of any kind. "Shader Preload" Turned On and "Shader Preload During Cinematics" Turned Off, the rest turned maximum / Turned on. Load time about average 2 minutes (4k resolution, haven't check time for 1080p). Memory usage close to 5.0Gb RAM during 4k gaming sweat.gif My system is i7-870 4Ghz, 8Gb mem, Palit Jetstrm 680 2G.

Crashes? Hmm... not really. I don't get that not enough memory issue as well. Perhaps you need to update graphics driver (344.60).

GTX 980 Ti Incoming...

I think the multiple rumors stems from the naming of the GPU, it may or may not be called 980 Ti, or that a higher-end version than the 980 Ti is another name (perhaps Titan II).

I'm just waiting for a higher VRAM Maxwell, 6GB or 8GB would do it for me to finally jump to Maxwell.
