The trick with using flash in macro is not to use the flash as your keylight, use it as a fill instead. If you use it as a keylight, the flash to distance ratio rule will apply. You get a properly exposed "area" (i didnt say subject coz ur flash wasnt aimed directly on it ) then the background gets very dark, unless the background is very close to your subject. If you wanna use your flash as the keylight, you will need another flash to fill the background.

OTOH, if you use the ambient light as keylight, the whole background will be properly lit, you just need to fill the subject. Since it is so close to the subject, the flash usually will fire at faster speed and lower power freezing whatever crap that's there.

Anyway, I don't use flash usually. 90% of my macros were done with natural light only hehe.
