I using unifi orange router and android box.
1. Can I plug a hdd into the USB port behind the router and share the movie file into xbmc in my android box?
The default firmware for the unifi orange d-link router do not have the sharing of hdd via samba etc. You can however try flashing with dd-wrt and open-wrt try. But it will be a lot of work....

You are referring to the USB Shared Port in the DLink router.
I used it before but had stopped using it because the connected harddisk can only be accessed from one machine at any one time and the speed is very slow. It also requires a driver to be installed on a Windows machine, and I am not sure if the driver is available for Android box.

Maybe your xbmc installation somehow got corrupt as its supposed to perform quite smoothly on windows and your hardware is more than sufficient (Try clean uninstall & reinstall?). As for buffering, you using Ethernet or WIFI? Also depending on the url you are streaming from, you might want to try streaming just 720P and below, cuz some streaming urls like "beststreams", "Gorrillavids", "nowvideo" etc, they serve out media much better and faster.

Ethernet bro... that one I'm trying to view... is just SD... Well i guess I need to re-install

Hmm... That's interesting, always thought it was for troubleshooting or flashing firmwares only by techs. Not favorable then due to its limitations.

I meant MP4 for better compatibility across various media players. As for XBMC and movie database, I scrape and store my media info locally using Ember media manager, connect the external hard drive directly to my media box and ask xbmc to scrape locally. Much faster. Thought of setting up a NAS but figured i didn't need the extra expense/features since the media box, router and hard disk are permanently located on the TV cabinet.

Try a clean reinstall first. Unifi's VIP10 is more than capable of streaming 720P content effortlessly via Ethernet, much less SD content. Completely avoid or limit torrent speeds and connections to roughly 50% of your bandwidth, when you want to stream media.

Hardware: Raspberry Pi Model B, WD Mybook 3TB, LAN connection
Software: Raspbian, Samba, Transmission and amuled
Movies: 1080p, DTS-HDMA, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DD. (some movies >40GB)
Access from XBMC over network: DTS and DD - no problem. DTSHDMA or Dolby TrueHD - need to turn off Transmission and amuled.

My hdd connects to Pi directly.
USB hub need to be powered, so will consumed more electricity, since the setup is supposed to run 24/7. I suggest you get the new model B+ that comes with 4 USB ports.

Do you have the link where to buy the new model B+ with that 4 usb ports? And do your RPi also served as NAS? How good is the r/w speed?

I just got 2 B+ from RS.
I use RPi both as a downloader and NAS at the same time. Never bothered about the r/w speed, but streaming speed is decent enough.

Help needed..
I installed xbmc into my windows machine. After installed, I add in the fusion navi-x. The thing is it's very slow(seems like hanging) and the movie keeps buffering. Even when it can play, it is seriously choppy.
Network no issue as i can stream youtube without any issues.. 10mb line...
My spec are in my signature .. bt rig...

i hv this problem too with windows vista on pc. pretty much gave up xbmc on my >5yr old pc.

However, it works fine on android, so i stick to the android for xbmc.

version: 13.1 gotham

if u can't do that, next best thing wud be to use the samba or file sharing feature in the native player of the android.

not sure how good the orig orange router will perform wifi but with a better router, u can stream wireless up to 1080p dts video smoothly between androids, pc-android, etc. within a reasonable radius.

full hd... "hd" is a word of many meanings!

generally, the bigger the file, the better video and audio. i m most probably wrong somewhere, but i go with this order:

iso/bdmv (best)
m2ts
mkv
mp4 (worst)

This is not strictly true. Most of the time the size of the file depends on how many audio tracks it contains.
I have an mkv file that contains 10 audio tracks and 25 subtitles. I extracted only the English audio track and English/Chinese subtitles, reducing the file size from 40+GB to 20+GB. The video track remains the same.

why some people setup xbmc with sql? If that case i think better to use my netbook as NAS for hosting those media since it no use at there. Is this method ok? Performance will be good?

because it provides server side media info. all media info and info update will be handled server side, without needing each client to scrape multiple times for each player.
add new media to the server, server does the info update, server updates the sql database, and all player will see the new media plus all the necessary info without needing separate media refresh. saves time if you have a single centralized media library providing access to multiple player throughout the entire house.

netbook as nas if you have a couple of drivers. if you have more than a couple, consider building a low powered server.
