Thanks!

Knew about Kodi version location a few days ago. My H8 is 1 version behind. But Nicety cautioned that updating may result in some add ons not working and need to reinstall these add ons. Too troublesome for me. So way out is to wait for next Kodi upgarde. They upgrade Kodi quite frequently.

Saw Add-on infor before and did not know that is where the version data is. They should put the version no next to Genesis in the main menu! Ha. Mine is already 5.1.3 version. Auto update for me, I think.

Thanks.

Yeah, addons are usually auto-updated. KODI gets updated regularly but you don't have to update as it goes along if you are worried about addons compatibility. Stick to officially stable releases.. Not Beta or RC versions. Personally for me, I've always updated as it comes out cuz bugs are squashed & features introduced, plus never had any major issues with my currently installed addons despite the steady updates, cuz major addons are maintained. If I experience any major faults, then I simply roll back to the previous version.

Hi Guys,
Been using Kodi on ATV 2 fro a few years now and it has been working fine. However now i understand that Kodi will not be supporting ATV 2 users.

I need to ask if i want to replace my ATV 2 with a new box what would you guys suggest? I am not very tech savy but by using youtube jail break and install Kodi on my ATV 2. So i am looking for a simple box that can link up to my tv (HD 1080 capability) and easy to use and upgrade Kodi. Any suggestions. I also want to use it for Netflix / HBOGO and Hulu. Any feedback will be much appreciated.
Thanks

All TVs claim to do the same thing and yet some perform better than others. Here's my advice based on experience and readings so far... Stay away from android boxes or sticks of RM200, you'll only be asking for trouble later as they are mostly under-powered. Various Mibox users have reported issues particularly with KODI and so I'd avoid that as well if KODI is important to you. As for Netflix, only few certified android boxes CAN stream at 1080p, most just max out at 480p, this is not a fault of the hardware but from Netflix, which refuses to support unofficial boxes. I could easily recommend a box I use here but your previous comment about not being so tech-savvy & coming from a different ecosystem (ATV), its best if you do the research first and fully understand what can be achieved and not, then make your peace with that. Its much easier than you think.

Hint: Get a box that doesn't just say KODI compatible, but one who's devs and manufacturer actively works with the KODI dev team. Search and read thru the android TV boxes thread here on lowyat, Youtube & blog reviews etc... You'll find user's opinions on boxes and brands.

Thanks for your feedback voncrane. I am looking at spending RM 500 Plus or minus RM100. Can I find out what box you are using? It will help me shorlist and narrow down my investigation. I am an uncle who likes to sit down and watch TV. Netflix/HboGO i watch on my smart TV with help from UnoTelly. I prefer using Netflix/HBOGO to watch older series and also easier to use.

I need Kodi for the newer episodes of programmes i follow. For those who were wondering why i need netflix

You are welcome. I use a Minix Neo X8-H Plus, might be overkill for just 1080p and KODI support, but hey better safe than sorry. Perhaps the Minix Neo Z64 running Windows, if android isn't your thing. Another contender would be the "Wetek Play", mainly because it supports Android and OpenELECH (known to play well with KODI) at the same time, but I've had no hands on experience or physical access to it. With Netflix, using a DNS service and the smart TV app is much better, at least doing so allows for 1080p and 4K content for supported TVs. The closest in terms of UI and support to the ATV 2 that I can think of would be the Amazon Fire TV or Nvidia Shield Android TV. Going to stop here as this isn't the right thread to discuss such.. smile.gif

Sure... Try not to overthink the decision as there's no "perfect" box.

Good for you and hope it remains that way. However, perform a search for "mibox" in this Kodi thread or Home Entertainment as a whole and the recent posts from current owners suggests issues.

Mibox has no compatibility issues at all with Kodi.
If u are comparing Minix Neo X8-H Plus i will tell u why u claim It has no prob.
Minix has 16gb eMMC storage space whilst Mibox has 4gb eMMc.
Being said that, Mibox reserved 2gb space for operating and recovery purposes , leaving only 2gb for apps.
Now a "decently" setup Mibox with all the apps will leave only about 700Mb space.
As u know, Kodi does alot of caching so without proper Kodi maintenance it will eventually takes up the whole storage causing Kodi to crash, but mind you the Mibox operation still has no prob because it has own storage space.
This issue can be easily solved by adding a sdcard (16gb class 10 selling only RM50) instead of using the on-board storage.

Plus, Mibox uses MIUI which often receives firmware updates so android functionality wise, it would only be better.
I dont know about Minix, does it has firmware updates OTA or has to manually done?

So being said that, Mibox at the priced 1/2 of Minix, isnt it worth it?

Very simple.... eMMC > SD Cards. SD Cards are highly prone to corruption and limited writes issues as it lives on, that extra cost will definitely increase not only the current total cost but future costs when the 1st sad card breaks down and another is required... So you store you KODI config, folders etc on an SD card and it gets fried, say goodbye to your custom installation. It's a snowball effect, so why go through the hassle?... As for updates, Minix provides regular OTA updates and bug fixes in addition to a custom made for Minix hardware KODi app, this is done despite the latest official KODI app working smoothly and you can have both installed and ran separately. There's a dedicated forum for tips, tricks and tweaks for more advanced users, it can be rooted and unrooted easily and best of all, primary support is purely in English.

Edit: There are cheaper boxes which perform satisfactorily as well. I just prefer the really good stuff when budget allows.
