One add-on from China has this display of boxes with crosses in the middle. I think they are chinese characters. How can I get Kodi to display chinese characters?

Thanks.
P/S managed to get chinese characters now.

Like to know how do you control the use of your TV box to prevent kids from watching the "wrong" movies/videos?

There is a parental control but it says it is only effective for some add-ons, not all.

Ideally, all the kids' shows are placed in one big menu and they cannot exit from that menu. Possible?

Thanks.
P/S  Installed another parental control from Kodi. This one is better, one can choose which add-on to protect.
*
most addon does not have "wrong" contents, it has to be manually turned on at the setting, and manually installed.
IMO u are pretty safe.

Hello All,

I'm looking for a media player and need your help. I recently got a Xiao Mi Box but Kodi on it was very unstable. I had to reinstall a few times.

Can someone suggest a good media player?

So far I'm looking at Minix Neo X8H Plus or Amazon Fire TV. Which is better, can install Kodi on Fire TV?

I would like to watch Hulu, Netflix and Cloud TV on it.

Thanks!
*
the reason Kodi does not work properly is due to insufficient memory space.
you have 4 options that is:
1. uninstall unnecessarily apps, for eg those chinese apps if u are not using, or those CloudTV, MyIPTV those requires subscriptions to get all content.
2. goto setting and clear cache.
3. re-install kodi (similar like clear cache) but u will lose all the installed add-ons unless u save it.
4. Use sdcard/usb and change the setting to use sdcard instead of built-in memory. Kodi will lose its add-ons again so just install the addons again

mibox many isue with kodi.... raspberry is stable for kodi but cannot use hard ...
*
Not really..
Refer to my above post, its due to insufficient disk space.

Because Mibox only left with 2GB disk space for user to install apps, 2gb are hidden and reserved for OS.
Seller will usually install quite some apps and when buyer receives the mibox, the remaining storage space is only about 500-600Mb.

And Kodi somehow might spike to high space usage (as mine now is 600Mb).

Most of the disk space are used for storing thumbnails and they are stored in the profile folder. You will need to move the profile folder to a separate drive to free up the internal disk space in your mibox. You can follow the steps from the link below:

Ahh no wonder coz even without internet still got the pictures.

Noted lately that when I selected a HD movie, Genesis showed the movie in 480 mode. Can get 720 mode before. Is it that Genesis will set the resolution depending on the broadband one is using? I am using 2 Mb only.

Thanks.

I believe its the stream not issue with broadband.
Heck i have even see HD for "In Theatre" but come out quality is CAM

Installing apps on the TV box will require granting the software some access to files (images etc), usage data etc.

I know that is the the norm with mobile phones now.

With streaming from Hdisk to the box, can the software then have access to the hdisk?

One may be opening access to others without really realising it.

Cheerio.
*
Ofcourse kodi will get access to the harddisk, if not how to stream?

No concern on Kodi getting the data from HD.

Concern is the installed apps (the ones which asked for some access during installation) having access to the HD data.
*
Its the same.
As long as hdd is mounted then any apps u installed also able to access it if they want, even if the apps was installed prior to u plug in hdd.

I thought there is network security in place to avoid things like that. And thus the apps need one's permission to access during installation.

Sounds like it is wild wild west for network security then.

Cheerio.
*
I believe should have such security apps but it also mean annoying "warning" screen could pop up anytime, just like in mobile phones.
If u really concern about security, betted just share out a folder and connect thru other ways except direct connection via cable.

How do i backup entire Kodi including system settings like skin, favourite shortcuts, user preferences, including the video addons settings (eg. Saved Favourite Dramas list in Genesis)?

Basically if i format my android/pc i just need to reinstall Kodi and restore the backup and running as usual?
Or if i want to mass deploy the same things into different android devices?

Is it possible? What program/addons i need to install?

I just tried to backup using Script-Backup (by robweber) and cleared Kodi, but when restore it doesnt load skin/shortcuts and i have to manually run tvaddon config wizard again.
And launch Genesis to find out all my favourite list are gone.

Hey guys something is wrong now after my fail attempt to backup/restore kodi last nite.

Now when i want to watch anything, it will popup a window to download sources and takes like 30-40 seconds or more.

How do i make the sources pre-loaded back as usual?
Do i need to install back the repos?

Press the letter "O" on your keyboard. Its not exactly download speed but you can see the size of cached data and % of cache utilized. How fast it fills up depends on your current net connection and source.
What sources...addon...internet speed...?? Plus a bunch of other possible reasons... You can always do a fresh start.. wipe data/uninstall and reinstall KODI.
*
I guess u not sure wat im talking about.
Here is a pix.
Attached Image
when u chosen a movie/drama u try to play, it would show u a list of sources/provider or wat u call it, then u choose and it loads right?

So mine now doesnt load all the sources but each movie/drama also it will download then only i get to see the source/provider only then i can start watching.

Oh i know what I'm talking about. I asked you to give more details, rather than just saying sources not working or not being able to watch "anything". You do realize that files can be played off local and smb shares etc. By now, you should know how KODI works. Its just a box and what you do inside the box is up to you. You seem to be complaining about the Genesis addon (alone?), its performance depends on your hardware, what version of Genesis you are running, your internet speed (how fast it takes to pull list of sources) and priority of sources setup in settings. Here's my advice, especially if you plan on "mass deployment". Wipe your KODI installation, if you set it up yourself, then it should be easy to re-setup. When satisfied, do a backup and test on another installation. For best results, look into creating a custom build or wizard. Doing this, gives you an easy zip file, install from zip and kodi extracts everything into the right places.

I just did a new installation on another device from scratch, and seems like thats how kodi V1.5.2 works.
