More than 1.5 million people have signed a petition demanding an inquiry into Adelina Sotnikova's victory over Yuna Kim in the women's figure skating in Sochi.

As Russia's first Winter Olympics headed into the final weekend, the host nation rejoiced after snatching the coveted figure skating title for the first time late on Thursday.

Sotnikova, who few had expected to be among the medals before the competition began, eclipsed overwhelming favourite Kim, who led after the first round, despite the defending champion producing a stirring performance that many viewers had deemed to be enough.

The controversy rumbled on into Friday, when South Koreans expressed shock and anger at a decision they said had been engineered to favour the Russians. "Queen Yuna" is one of South Korea's best-known athletes and had won gold in the Games in Vancouver in 2010.

It was not only South Koreans who doubted the outcome. "I am stunned by this result, I don't understand the scoring," said Katarina Witt, the 1984 and 1988 champion, while commentating on German TV.

Russian Is Surprise Winner in Women’s Figure Skating

QUOTE
SOCHI, Russia — Many expected a Russian to win a gold medal in women’s figure skating at the Sochi Games, but hardly anyone expected that it would be Adelina Sotnikova.

Overlooked by her country earlier at the Olympic team event, Sotnikova, 17, waited patiently for the singles competition and delivered a sophisticated and aggressive performance on Thursday to score a major upset over the 2010 champion, Kim Yu-na of South Korea.

In the subjective world of figure skating, which is governed by an opaque judging system and a complicated scoring system not easily understood by casual fans, the outcome fostered immediate debate.

Sotnikova landed seven triple jumps to six for Kim and won the long program with 149.95 points. She finished with 224.59 overall points and became the first Russian or Soviet woman to win an individual gold medal.

Even with her grace, maturity, composure and soaring jumping ability, Kim led by less than a point after Wednesday’s short program. On Thursday, she skated a poised and flowing tango routine and finished with 144.19 points in the long program.

Still, her routine was not the most athletically challenging. Sotnikova scored higher on the technical merit of her program. For instance, Kim did not attempt a triple loop or a double axel, triple toe loop combination, as Sotnikova did.

Also, Kim did not receive the highest level for her step sequence or her layback spin. She took the silver medal with 219.11 collective points.

“It was totally fair,” said Elvis Stojko, a two-time Olympic silver medalist from Canada. “Adelina was ready. Kim didn’t have enough technical ammunition.”

Sotnikova’s skating appears tailor made for the current scoring system, a kind of scavenger hunt for accumulated points that, some experts have complained, favors mathematics at the expense of artistry.

How Sotnikova Beat Kim, Move by Move

The scores for Adelina Sotnikova and Kim Yu-na were close for most of their long program elements. But Sotnikova took a significant lead in a few areas. Adam Leib, a coach and national technical specialist for U.S. Figure Skating, analyzes the performances.

Double-Triple Combination

Sotnikova’s combination had a much higher base value because she chose to do the most difficult double jump, the double axel. She received high marks for her good flow, height and distance. She added a 10 percent bonus by executing the combination in the second half of the program.

the double jump Kim chose is one of the easiest, so it has a low base value. The entry was simple, and the jump ended with little speed.

Footwork and Layback Spin

On two elements, the footwork and the layback spin, Sotnikova had a difficulty level of 4, while Kim had a level 3. This meant that Kim had nearly a point deficit in the base value for the two elements combined. In her layback spin, Sotnikova changed positions with ease while maintaining speed and intensity, and the judges rewarded her with higher marks. She received nearly two points more than Kim did for the two elements.

Adelina Sotnikova upsets Kim Yu-na

http://espn.go.com/olympics/winter/2014/fi...gracie-gold-4th

SOCHI, Russia -- Russia's cupboard was so bare of world-class female figure skaters that the sport's most dominant nation had to turn to the kids a few years ago.

Among those youngsters was Adelina Sotnikova, who won a national championship in 2009, when she was just 12.

She was too young to compete at the 2010 Olympics. When she finally got to the Games this year, she was overshadowed by an even younger teammate.

After a final that saw Russia's Adelina Sotnikova eclipse heavy favorite Kim Yu-na for the gold, figure skating's subjective judging system is again creating intrigue and outrage, Jim Caple writes. Story

While many figure skating experts didn't take issue with the women's podium, the underlying issue is that the sport has left plenty of room to speculate about manipulation, Bonnie D. Ford writes. Story

But on Thursday night, the 17-year-old Sotnikova looked comfortable and unburdened by the pressure of the host nation, becoming Russia's first gold medalist in women's Olympic figure skating.

In the signature moment of the Games for Russians, Sotnikova defeated defending champion Kim Yu-na of South Korea. Both women skated nearly flawless programs, but Sotnikova completed one more decisive triple jump.

"I first dreamed to be at the Olympics after the nationals in 2010,'' Sotnikova said. "And when I watched the Games in Vancouver, I really wanted to qualify for the next Games. I knew it won't be easy. There are so many new talented girls around.''

Well, not really in Russia. Not until Sotnikova and 15-year-old Julia Lipnitskaia developed into junior world champions. And while much-heralded Lipnitskaia was stumbling in Sochi, Sotnikova soared. When she won the free skate, she further confirmed Russian command of the sport.

From the video, the Russian's routine was definitely more risky and the korean chose to play safe and try to be more 'artistic'. Fortune favors the brave.
