LOL....I forgot still got this thread. Cockatiels are certainly fun to have. They like to perch on your shoulder once they bond with you. But you should only have one bird so that he will want to have attention from you.

if not wrong, they can talk, but need to keep single. then you MUST have the patience and time to teach it. One word at a time. Even budgies can talk.
Of coz its hard to catch them. actually you have to train them before letting them out. If you must, you can clip their wings first. Besides, if they are trained, they will fly to you. and biting is their last means of defence. So you have to bear with it. Do not show fear as they will learn that biting you will set them free. They also need lots of fresh food (Pasta, rice, veges, fruits etc). If only on a seed diet, sure they will die early. Seeds are just like junk food. You may also consider feeding them seeds and pellets, in addition to lots of fresh food. Budgies if feed on straight seed diet, die in 3 yrs. But if feed with a wide variety of food, can live up to thirteen years or even more. (Tiels not sure... Happy Bird Keeping. |

QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Aug 1 2007, 08:11 PM) HAhaha... price of course expensive... but then if got the money, kinda worth it since can live 60 to 70 years with great care. My bro's AG cost my dad RM2.7k 8 years ago.... now the price dropped... Rm1.8k can get a chick already. still, RM1.8k is kind of expensive for me. haha. So how many words your AG learned? They are the best talker.QUOTE(zuhairi6368 @ Aug 1 2007, 08:47 PM) if only got an owl, can join dis forum ar? LOL..can can. But I think owls not suitable for pets lar. They need to fly around and search for food, not meant to keep in cage for display. Or maybe you keep her in a big big aviary? nway, dis is my 'luci in the sky with demons'.. [attachmentid=270867] |

Well, I think clipping a bird's wing is more safer and the bird is easier to be tamed also. This is because the bird wont have to spend time flying over from curtain to curtain and avoiding being caught by you.
Clipping a bird's wing is not cruel. The wings will grow back eventually.. Its not that you cut off the whole wing, you are just clipping the few front feathers and they will grow back the next molt. But when you are clipping the wings yourself, just be careful not to trim the blood feather. And for bedding, newspaper would just do but just keep in mind you have to change it twice a week or once every week. As for raising chicks, you dont even have the experience to raise an adult bird, let alone a chick. Most budgies in store are under 6 months which mean they are still young and taming can be done easily. Just FIY, it is advised not to use plastic cups for water or anything. Because they can be stratched easily and the stratches are perfect breeding places for bacteria. Get a stainless steel one. I assume that you know what to feed you birdie. If you are not sure, please ask. |

lol...you mean chopping the wing? Thats cruelty. Everytime you see feathers growing you can just trim it.
Well, 4 months budgie is completely fine. And I assume you would want the birdie to bond with you right? That means you will have to spend quite a lot of your time with him/her. Not to mention DIY toys. |

I dont really know the price for a tamed one cause I usually bought the untamed ones. lol...
For cages, length would be more important than height. So get a long one instead of a tall one. I think a 1.5 - 2 ft one would do. Happy bird keeping! |

LOL...I didnt tame budgies myself cause I bought 2 at the same time so they paid attention to each other rather than me. And I dont really have the time to tame them (Oppss) LOL...
Well, for cages, I bought a 2.5ft for RM55. And that was three years ago. Where do you live? If you couldnt get a big one, then get one with average size. As long as you take the bird out, he would be fine. Just visit the petshops in your area. Ask and compare the prices. Why dont you pay a visit to your breeder and see how he keep his birds? He might have an extra cage for you. LOL.. |

I cant really tell as it varies from individual to individual. But they are considered small size birds. Smaller than a cockatiel, for sure. When will you be getting your birdie?

Oh...so you are renting your own room? Or staying with parents? Cause budgies can be noisy at times and I am sure you wouldnt want to disturb your friends.
Normal seeds will do. I usually bought the Golden Emas 10 or something like that. Cause it is the only brand available. Dont ever buy seeds from a big sack. (The shop keeper will ask you how much you want and they will weight for you.) And seeds alone wont be enough, they will need a wide range of diet, eg pasta, eggs, veges, fruits, brown rice, etc etc. So better prepare your budget right now. LOL...Still alive, of course. They have been with me for 2 years and I expect another 7-8 years to be with them, if the cat didnt show up and decided to stratch my budgies. I have lost few due to the cute kitties.

QUOTE(michael2wk @ May 5 2008, 11:15 PM) not to sabur ur from buying anything things. LOL...I still remembered the first time I took my budgies to the toilet. They were like flying here and there and I had a hard time catching them. Thats when I decided to trim their feathers. hahai got a breeder who sell normal & english budgie btw 150 to 170, tame birds. will double check for you if u wan. pure budgie breeder. bought 2 eng budgies from him and all fat n big. if u not in the hurry, try to read more n research a bit more. single 2.5 or 3 month should be betta to bond. clip wing is advised, tame / bonding the bird in a smallest room, eg - toilet. so they can wont fly here n there or teach them whistle, i taught my lovebirds wolf whistle in the toilet, simple instruction like up, down n so on. just my 2 cent. cheers!! |

QUOTE(liette` @ May 5 2008, 11:25 PM) Michael, how much does your breeder charge for a tamed Common Budgie? I'm looking for Common Budgies as I've read they're smarter than their English counterparts and also have a higher life expectancy. lol...I am younger than you loh. haha. Smart or not smart depends on the bird itself. And as stated, diet plays an important role. Feeding solely on seeds and you can expect to say goodbye to your birdie after 5 years. Nice prophet, how old are you? Uncle ah? Michael, did you take your English for shows? And litte, you can always hang the cups and tubs using wires. And having a bird's wing clipped doesnt mean it cannot fly at all. Clipping the wings is like they will not fly too high but they can still flap their wings. It is very important that you only clip the first 6 feathers of the wing so as to retain their ability to fly. And budgies have powerful legs and beak. They will hop from perch to perch and beak serves as the third leg which mean they will use their beak to climb. This post has been edited by prophet007: May 6 2008, 12:15 AM |

one more thing, if you use water tumbler, remember to change the water everyday. Dont think that oh, theres still water, I will wait till tomorrow. And budgies like to make soup which means they will poop in the water.
Budgies do like to bath. But dont suddenly spray on them. They will be scared to death. LOL... Mist the surrounding first then slowly change the target to the birdies. For me, I will bath them whenever I like cause I use hair dryer to dry them up. LOL..And if you have a bath tub, you dont need to mist them so often. liette, not sprinkle water la. Use the misting bottle. And dont be fool by the budgies. Even though they have finished eating the seeds, the husk will still remain in the feeding cup. So check the cup every other day and make sure it is filled with seeds, not just husk. Veges you can feed them every day or every other day. Depends on you. I sometimes feed them with bell pepper, sweet potato, choy sum, fruits and others. Varies their diet so they wont get bored. And perhaps you will be tempted to buy the fortified or vitamin added seeds. IMHO, I think those so call fortified seeds are useless because the birds only eat the contents and will left the husk. Its not that they will lick the seed to get the vitamins. So the so-called seeds are really a total waste. This post has been edited by prophet007: May 6 2008, 12:27 AM |
