I am interested in the Dahon Speed Uno. Foldie fans in the US claimed this bike is the ultimate minimalist bike. I cannot find any discussion of this bike in any local online forum. One dealer in Dahon bikes claimed it is not available to the Malaysian market. Price at Amazon.com is USD399. Any info from anyone here?

uno means single speed. r u sure u wan single speed? USD399 can get you a 7 speed XDS bike.. even tern 7 speed is about Rm1400 only

I have one road bike and one mountain bike. Both are Miyatas. They are now at my parents place. I moved to an apartment when I got married. Keeping those 2 bikes in pristine condition is time consuming and has put me off bicycling for the last few years. The Dahon Speed Uno I hope will get me back to cycling for health and fitness.

here in bolehland we got MU Uno.. price a bit over rm2k .. calling myak9 for help he have one.
*
He has the Speed Uno? I think USD399 for the Dahon Speed Uno is reasonable. I get the impression that the Dahon distributor here is not interested in bringing it in. If enough members are interested, form a Speed Uno Riders Club and organise fast rides in a velodrome.

Hahahaha...in the west the Dahon Speed Uno is maybe the ultimate "less is more" bike, but here it's more like "give less pay more" bike...

To the experts here, if I can get hold of a used dahon chromoly bike, stripped everything and then mod it like the Dahon Speed Uno, will it be easily done or will there be a lot of hassles about finding compatible components?

If u intend to do that get the parts first and after that the bike ..then start building your bike... afraid you might have trouble to source the parts
*
That is even riskier. I'm sure Dahon or Tern will make it very very hard for us to mod their cheaper bike to Speed Uno, Mu Uno or Link uno. You will end up frustrated trying. And after spending money, time, sweat and tears you start convincing yourself that the present asking price is real real cheap.

Ok la, I'll wait till the end of the year. By then maybe someone will bring in the Dahon Speed Uno at a more reasonable price...

Dahon or Tern chromoly bikes from rm1000 - rm5000, is there a big difference in the frame? Or is the price difference mostly the components? Frame only, which is the best frame, value for money, between these price point? I know this is almost impossible to answer. But I don't mind some kedai kopi discussion. Hehe

to those of you who are interested in coaster hub bike..
do learn and think carefully about coaster brake hub..
it's totally different cycling experiences from normal or single speed bike..
it's more like fixie..
fun and easy to maintain..the only cons will be if you stay on hilly area..

http://sheldonbrown.com/singlespeed.html

some do asked me why I like coaster brake bikes..as cons are more than pros..hey..I am a simple person and I dun like complicating things..even my MTB.. I also used 9 speed only..
if one day I regret or thinking of changing to a geared bike..I still can mod my bike..

you can convert a geared bike to coaster bike..just change the hub and get rid of all the shifter and cable..
coaster hub are easy to purchase via some local shop and online shop..a lot of Schwinn Cruiser used coaster brake hub.. you can scout from there.. icon_idea.gif

I'm a fan of "Minimalism". That also includes architecture and interior design. I fell in love with the single speed foldie and I want one. But the sellers are asking unreasonable prices for them. But now small enterprising businessmen are filling the niche. Recently the Dahon Speed Uno is available in Singapore for SGD 500. Check out www.wheelonfiresg.com. The prices are now like, Amazon=USD399, mikebicycleshop=RM1400, wheelonfiresg=SGD500

What is the difference between Dahon Speed Uno and Tern Link Uno? (Except for the brand). Which one is a better buy?
*
At current prices between the two bikes the Link Uno is the better buy. The Link Uno is RM1800 or less now. The Speed Uno should be about RM1200. About RM600 less. But it is not. The difference is less than RM300. The Link Uno has front brakes and mudguards installed. If you want single speed aluminium foldie, you better act fast and grab the few remaining in the shops now. I heard the dealers are not restocking. The Speed Uno is one of Dahon bestsellers in the US. I'm sure Tern will have their version out soon.

Not sure how true this is, but many of these bikes are from China via Taobao and are fake Dahons.  There was a report a few days ago on Wall St Journal (?). Be careful if the price is too good.  whistling.gif

Selling even a real Dahon Speed Uno at RM1400 is expensive. You can go and see the bike first before deciding. For me, I'm not paying RM1400 even for the real thing. Better get the Link Uno or Mu Uno for RM1800 from the authorised dealers. Knowing the mentality of motor vehicle drivers in Malaysia it's wise to add a front brake to the Speed Uno. To do so you need an adaptor. Since it rains a lot in Malaysia might as well put on the mudguards too. Adding up, hmm... better get Tern Link Uno.

kokomin....sooo you are from penang tooo...gooood...
tern link uno and dahon speed uno/mu uno have their own design..
when I buy my mu uno... I go with the hinge/clamp
that time chin aik only have link uno and mu uno..
by compared the 2 bike I found that I like the dahon better...

I think so too. It seems that the Mu Uno is harder to get now. Am I wrong? The best thing about the Mu Uno is that the chain does not go through the chainstay triangle. The bike can be mod to use belt driven system. Lighter and cleaner. Don't know if anyone in malaysia has done it. Seen one in BikeForum.

i would rather get 7 speed for Rm1400

I have only seen the Dahon Speed Uno only online. Don't know the quality of the finishing. Chromoly is cheap and easier to TIG weld than aluminium. The components are so-so only. Your mind says it's only an RM850 bike but when your heart has fallen in love, you know you will fork out the money...hahahaha don't know how long I can hold on

Yes, a bike like the Boardwalk is the better buy
