Yes, keep waiting forever if you're so scared of 3ROD. You could wait for them to announce their new design and all that in 2009 but do you really want to wait that long? Because once that happens, you'll have less than a year before another next gen box appears.

Remember, 360 has been around for a while now. There's not much time left before the end of it's life cycle. It's already close to 2008. I give it till 2010.

No use asking us what to do because we're going to say buy it and send it off for warranty if it 3RODs. It's like saying you're going to wait for the ultimate piece of electronics to be built and then you'll buy it. That's of course not going to happen because they'll just keep coming out with better stuff each time. What you buy today becomes obsolete tomorrow. Same thing with the 360. Buy it today, few months down the road they'll introduce a coffee maker in the new version. Then after that, you find a new board on it that'll help. Then in 2009, a board that doesn't 3ROD. Is that confirmed? No idea, but here's hoping.

I suggest you just get one and enjoy it while it's running. If it breaks down, send it off for warranty or get one of the people here to help you fix it.

You'll have to create the gamertag from the xbox menu itself then you'll get the 1 month trial gold account.

I made the same mistake and burnt the month since I didn't want to keep using my other gamer nick.

If it's not a big deal, just forget about it I guess. Unless you don't mind changing. Create a new gamertag from the xbox menu on your unit.
