I was hit with a 3rod 2 months back as well, after 8 months plus in operating.
Buying a unmodded console with second hand games is probably the best cost saving method at the moment.

You Cant go on live with a modded console. Get asian or jap edition like michael say; the games are significantly cheaper and the standard in this forum anyway.

There are three major factors to determine the right LCD

Type of panel (TN panel, VA panel, etc)
Narrow Dynamic Range (400,500,1,500 cd/m2, etc) higher better
Contrast (1200:1, 5000:1, 8000:1) Higher better

Honestly speaking, at the rate the LCDs are going, they are all good Enough.
My phillips 32" (RM2699 w 5 years warranty) is rated at 5000:1 contrast ratio.
Even Sony 32" (RM2999 w 1 year warranty) is rated at 8000:1

Your budget of 5-6k should easily get you a 40" LCD TV

Just stick to the good brands and you should be fine. I Fancy Sharp Aquous though if i have the budget.

People in the xbox 360 community in Malaysia bought an xbox knowing that there is a CHANCE that it might suffer from 3rod, now knowing that it will happen. The lifespan may be extended beyond 3 years; who knows?

So, to answer your question on why risk buying the xbox? It is because we know the consequences and the solution of 3rod besides the real fact that xbox 360 games; quantity and quality, shows that that is the way to go; regardless of the 3rod problem

PS3 do have their fair share of laser head problem. Their game library is inadequate. So what if MSG4 is coming? so what if FF13 is coming? a few good games do less justice than facing the 3rod problem(assuming that you are the unlucky one)

From the way i see it, Sony either do too little things too slow, or they probably donated a bulk of their R&D budget to the make-a-wish foundation.

your best bet is to get a 2nd hand ori vga cable if you cant afford it.

The 3rd party vga cable got a tendency to break down, have double vision, ghosting effects and etc. You may save some cash there but eventually you Will know that you'll need an ori vga cable. I just sold one a couple of months ago at RM80 so go get it at the pasar malam thread. faster,safer, than play-asia.com

I think xbox 360 premium now should be around 1k 2nd hand.
It is extremely rare to find an elite 2nd hand (besides the one yestserday @2.2k with a hell load of bundle)

Dont put your hopes up too high on 2nd hand fifa08 or PES Though. People who usually buy it (Like yourself!) will play it until the next version comes out.

Dont worry too much about the 3rod thingy. You'll be amaze with what our 360 community can do about it. Im still thoroughly impressed with the NOS MOD and Frankenstein mod. conclusion, just get the 360

Technically speaking you can use your phone as a modem but the software is simply not ready yet

Anyway, for your case, you will probaly need to get a dedicated 3g modem (huanwei is prob the cheapest). better opt for those optimized for HSDPA connection modems for max speed, and you can play on live

How did you confirm whether it is not yet 3rodded? Although 3rods got tendency to re-occur, it is not relevant as it can occur pretty much randomly.

if u do not want FPS games, then that rules out a lot of great games such as Bioshock and orange box (and cod4 FTW)

At the moment im pretty hooked to Virtua Tennis 3 and forza2. One game worth mentioning is condemned which is also FPS.


There is always reserved space use for the dashboard. I believe it is 4GB so it should be 16GB by default. There are probaly some nonsense inside, Search and Destroy or maybe it is a rare once in a life time idol movie easter egg dvdrip inside your hdd?

The 40gb ps3 is super competitive, i think the range around RM1300 (Maybe plus minus a bit). Fuyoh, That's gonna hurt our 20gb pro

But i think only with 2 usbs and with wifi. I nvr use my xbox usbs before anyway built-in Wifi would be a treat though.

i dont have any games loh.. The exclusives for ps3 are minimal. Non-exclusives no point la, since x360 games are cheaper than ps3. I think the only notable one is drake. I think heavenly sword is a bit overrated. Other exclusives are...NGS,Ratchet,folklore,eerrr.. warhawk and motorstorm?

I think PS3 is perfect for irregular gamers i guess..no xlive fees, and does not require constant playing (I heard the thermal paste in the x360 can dry up if not being used for a while right?) I know ull say im an irregular gamer too but i rather play x360.

The hdmi to dvi is quite good la. i used a third party one. much much better than x360's 3rd party vga cable.

P/S Dvi-d support up to 1920x1200 (16:10) which usually starts from 22" and above. This is considered HD quality already.

I believe most xbox 360s in KL are unmodded. They will only offer the mod service as a package or after you buy the xbox (means u can bring your own xbox there). It is just a service after all.

Just ask nicely and most likely you'll find unmodded xboxes anywhere. Of course there are recommeded shops here like Gamers hideout at cineleisure, or gamers solution or etc...
