That is wrong...

From futeko.com...

Q: Differences between HiMedia Q5 Pro and Q10 Pro? Q5 and Q10 Pro share the same chipset and have identical performance. Firmware is the same. The differences between the two are that Q5 Pro has: * No internal 3.5" HDD bay, * 8GB vs. 16GB storage, * No front touch buttons, * No coaxial digital audio port.

PS... I dunno about firmware being the same...

The Q10 Pro is worth the extra RM. Basic Comparison. Full reviews available.

Suspected as much.. Just wasn't bothered enough to read up and post a proper differences list.  tongue.gif.. Lurker can read or watch full reviews.. Plus it's a no brainer that the Q10 Pro is better than the Q5 Pro.

Surprisingly q5>q10 for some 4k playability...but I dunno why...

one thing i discovered in the last few days...

if u r heavy into playback of videos with digital (dd/dts) and hd audio (ddtruehd/dtshdma), you gotta get a box with a native player that can do that.

if u rely on kodi for usb playback, it is becoming a nightmare for android devices.

i can't fully understand all of it after reading and reading but i can tell it is becos kodi is setting a new std for v17. it gets worse with differences in android 5, 6, 7! biggrin.gif

in short, android boxes and androidtv firmware (and their chipsets) that do not comply with kodi 17 will be in a mess for dd and dts audio streams, no need to talk hd audio.

feel free to read all these:

From what I understand... Kodi didn't want to support android devices...that's why koying left & fork spmc...

I follow their work on & off...not sure what the future holds for android...i was surprised with kodi 17 for Android...i didn't think it would happen...

Himedia, Minix, vs the rest...

What is important to me & never mentioned in detail in most reviews...half the time I use my Himedia like a USD350 Sonos Connect just to play music...by using the HiControl apk, I can see what is happening and control the box with my phone. I don't need to connect or switch on my TV.

Minix has headphone out/mic in... Good to use as a "NUC PC" for skyping, recording, etc...

where was that mentioned? can't find...
my box is on latest firmware, haven't noticed any problem with 1080p, 4k, or hd audio.
*
Probably not relevant anymore with new firmware. Review was on initial fw, and the issue was on a few types of 4k only. (PS that page has link to both reviews if you are still interested.)

IMHO, q5 vs q10, mainly form factor...16gb to complete spec wise as top dog...some people needs it others don't...but nice to have anyway...

Why is the 16gb flash memory important if one can use external memory?

For installing lots of Android apps I suppose. Games (which I think I won't need as I don't game on my mobile also)
Hmm...
*
Internal eMMC memory is faster and makes the user experience more pleasant particularly loading apps...external sd/hdd is snail pace good enough for media storage.

As a first box...i think we all would agree and recommend 2/16gb as the entry point...

I'm really curious why Himedia choose 8gb for their #2 box...

That is the base model... slim, small and powerful.
Excellent for usb playback, home theater, samba.
Without kodi, can take a lot of apps.
With kodi, all good except quasar.

I had wanted a "q5proii" with 2/16gb, like q16.
I doubt himedia will do it now.
Resources better used on kodi17 wrapper for audio passthru.

Next gen, wud like to see kodi 17 audio sorted out, 3/32gb.
I will then get one, retire the last q5ii. tongue.gif
*
Base model for high end entry perhaps biggrin.gif ...there's a lot more at the mid/bottom level even ignoring those for China market...

Yup...would be interesting to see what else for international...saw a S912 box at their Chinese site...

Need some advice from the pros. I've done some research and i see that the main competitors here for android boxes are Minix, HiMedia and mibox. I've narrowed down to 2 choices which are the neo u1 (better 16gb storage) and mibox pro (better mt8693 a-73 chip and benchmarks).

That said these 2 are based on android OS and not android TV OS. I think that mibox 3c (not pro version) is based on Android TV OS. Are there any advantages of getting the TV OS version over the Android OS? other than the looks and feel that is.

If the advantages of the TV OS makes a difference, i might have to rethink my options.
*
My understanding is with TV os...you only get limited "TV" related apps in the play store...you probably can still & will side load the ahem apks so it's not such a big deal...i could be wrong though since I've never really looked TV os up... I'd prefer the normal os thank you...

How come this unit so under the radar?

One of many rebranded boxes. If OEM/fanbase is strong...then you may eventually find support if required...

until u have try out file commander, u will be amazed how clean and easy the file sharing on box using its "pc file transfer" function. turn on the service and you can access your box contents via browser on your mobile or pc.

Stopped using ES for years already...cant get Asus' to run on my q16... Now using total commander for some old school cool... biggrin.gif

you mean the write permission that thing? if not mistaken the app will prompt you and guide you to make it works.

i swear the file commander premium is the best for the period. it also tagged as editor choice in play store.

premium apk keyword:

q16 is android 4.4.2, es file explorer will work good, i am still using it there.

q10pro 7.0, it starts to restrict this and that, had to go ASUS fm.

Yes it does. But since I reset the box...just try something else biggrin.gif

download the premium version to eliminate ads brows.gif
- shows hidden files
- copy files in root
- web storage integration
- manage file from mobile/pc
*
On the phone...ftp & network is available for the free version...on the box need to go premium...

Setting/redeem accepts numeric only...lazy trying to go premium through visa payment/code since my visa not on file...

Anyway, its about same as AsusFM, extra being ftp & PC file transfer works in the background, and 30mb smaller which is nice.

Yes, it's available now. I'm using the free version. biggrin.gif

Is there any 4GB RAM box? If there's, it will be very limited choices. I only see 2GB most of the time and even my 3GB RAM box is pretty rare too.
*
Yes there's few 4gb...don't see the point for now...just bragging rights I suppose...

I see. I just know it's very rare.
Yes, it's pretty bloated. I'm a minimalist most of the time, looks like I will check out those apps suggested earlier and get rid of ES File Explorer. I just need one app that I can easily transfer files from mobile/PC to my box. biggrin.gif

So, there are 4GB boxes. laugh.gif

True, even I'm on 6GB RAM phone now, I still find it underutilized for my case. tongue.gif
*
ES is quite small and does more if I recall...just don't like how they set up the ads...

You can try total commander (file manager) & via (browser) if you like minimalist biggrin.gif
