Wigan Athletic held off promoted Southampton to claim a 2-0 away win on Saturday that took Roberto Martinez's side into the top half of the Premier League table. It took the Latics until November to claim their first away win last season but they took the three points at St Mary's Stadium thanks to second-half goals from Franco Di Santo and Ivorian new signing Arouna Kone. Southampton had led 2-1 at champions Manchester City in their opening game last weekend, before going on to lose 3-2, and they made an enterprising start against Wigan, who fell 2-0 at home to Chelsea in their first outing. Home captain Adam Lallana produced the first moment of excitement of the afternoon, with a rising 25-yard drive that Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi superbly tipped onto the crossbar. A tame first half drew to a close beneath driving rain on the English south coast but six minutes into the second period, Wigan struck. Shaun Maloney's through-ball released Di Santo and the Argentine kept his cool to lift the ball into the roof of the net from 10 yards. A goalscoring substitute in the game at City, Rickie Lambert was handed a start against Wigan and he led the Saints' efforts to find an equaliser in the second half. He drew a good save from Al Habsi with a well-struck effort in the 63rd minute and then teed up Jos Hooiveld for a header that landed on the top of the crossbar. Kone, a close-season acquisition from Levante, sealed victory in the 89th minute, robbing Jose Fonte of possession on halfway and running clear before beating Kelvin Davies in the Southampton goal.

QUOTE Saints are delighted to announce that Japanese international defender Maya Yoshida has agreed to join the Club from Dutch side VVV-Venlo.
The 24-year-old will sign a three-year deal at St Mary's after an undisclosed fee was agreed between the two clubs.
Yoshida's move is now waiting on him being given entry clearance while his work permit has already been granted by the Home Office.
"To come to the Premier League was one of my biggest dreams since I was a child," Yoshida said after agreeing to join the Club.
"I am very grateful to be able to become a Saint and I will do my best for the team and for the supporters.
"I saw a video of the recent history of Southampton since the takeover, which showed me the great supporters when the club was promoted last season.
"I want to show them what I can do as soon as possible and hopefully impress them with my performances."
First Team Manager Nigel Adkins welcomed his new defender to St Mary's, saying: "We are delighted to bring in Maya to the Club.
"He is a centre-half who is comfortable on both the right- and left-hand side as he is good with both feet and has a good physical presence about himself.
"We are really looking forward to working with him here at Southampton."
Maya was this morning named in the Japan squad for a friendly against the United Arab Emirates in Niigata on 6th September and subsequent 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier versus Iraq in Saitama five days later.
He will then become the second Japanese player in the Saints squad when he links up with national team colleague Tadanari Lee on the south coast after the international break. SOS

nice one, after Lee Tadanari.now there's 4 japanese players currently plying their trade in england.Like mourinho said, the PL will teach you something that other league can't,and perhaps there's something these young lads(granted Lee already in his mid 20s,but still) can get here in england
i was hoping Aston Villa would've take him instead though.with their defender crisis.
