Photoshop Question, How to make background transparent?

Kinda noob in photoshop here. Sifu plz help me.
Let's say i wanna make the picture below the background transparent, what tools should i use? I only know how to use magic wand selct the stuff i want and paste to another new transparent sheet. Sometimes using magic wand can't select the picture nicely.  |

Let's say the background is not single coloured like the picture i posted?
