com.my is for people to know your biz/website made is in malaysia, .com.cn is to let others know your biz/website made is in china, nothing different, just to let others know your company/website whereabout.

.com.my is definitely more expensive because you need to buy additional licenses.

IF you think people are gonna go to your website by typing in your URL with an added .my or .cn, then yes, you should register those extra ones. Who knows, you may miss some business if people tried going to the .my address and find nothing there, and they give up trying to find your company's website. But if its just a personal website, it's not that important to register all the different permutations of your website...

Another thing is: some people may type in a "www" in front of your address, some people will not. Example: try go to http://www.tm.net.my and http://tm.net.my. One goes to tmnet website, one just goes nowhere doh.gif

Chucky is correct, this is to avoid confusion. Thats why some companies they have .com, .net, even .org, not forgetting .com.my
This is to avoid consumers/visitors to be redirected to other irrelevant sites.
Porn/Spam/Stupid websites keep on buying domain names to hope that people will mistaken the domain name and ended up landing on their spam sites.
Maybe this will give you a clearer picture. If your company is big[I assume it is] and have customers from china, why not register for .com.cn?
Unless like wat others said it is personal site then why bother? whistling.gif

The .org domain, operated by Public Interest Registry, is unrestricted, but was intended to serve the noncommercial community.

The .net domain, operated by VeriSign Global Registry Services, is a generic top-level domain used by many types of organizations and individuals globally; it was historically intended for and is still commonly used by Internet service providers.

But usually people still register these domain (.org and .net) if is available. Same apply to .com.my / .net.my / .org.my

I have browse through the provider, and i noticed that -removed- offer the lowest price for the domain name registration. It even provide free domain name with signup of their hosting package. Worth to take a look at.

-More shameless advertising removed-

Hi,

I work at web hosting company, so from my experience, many people will register both .com & .com.my, why?

Because as a company in Malaysia, they want to own the .com.my domain, at the same time, they don't want people mis-type .com & go to other people website....

So, they will register both but build a website only (link together). Even you type .com or .com.my, will point to the same website.

Hope this info help,

Joe

1 domain is enough unless you have a popular brand name to protect such as Sony.
