Dear all,

Want to get your opinion on abnormal tyre wear on both my front tyres. Cracking and peeling rubber especially on the inner treads.
Tyres are 3 years old Michelin XM1. Rear tyres are same brand 4 years old, but no such issue.
Car make is 2006 Lancer.

Is it caused by worn bearings? Wrong tyre pressure? Want to confirm the issue before change.

Thanks in advance.

Looking at the condition of the tyres, I would say it's about time to replace them.. My guesses are you always travel on bad road conditions.

3 years also still OK. As long as the car is being drive frequently and there is no sign of crack in the rubber, still save to be use.

GT Radial Champiro Bax 2 also have the same problem, 1 1/2 years tyre, driving around penang island...
and i asked around tyre shops in raja uda, seberang perai, bukit mertajam, georgetown, sungai dua, bayan baru, bukit jambul, all the shop owners/formen said this is tyre quality issue.
most probably due to material used in it, and its not related to brand as i saw Michelin, GY, BS, etc also got this issue...

my car also front two tyres wear out damn fast compare to rear two tyres...and my front tyres are more serious than urs, the peeling and cracked...

Hi all,

Thanks for your insight.
I got an opinion from a classmate who used to work as customer liaison for another major tyre manufacturer. The cracking on the inner tread could be due to manufacturing defect (non-uniform due to under or over-baking), since the peeling only happen on the inner tread and on the front tyres which are from a different batch as compared to the rear ones.

I just returned from the dealer, who proposed that I look up the Michelin rep next time he comes around. There are no Michelin service centres in my town.

I thought Michelin provides liftime warranty on tyres. Check where u bought those tyres and get them claimed out.

However, they would only reimburse you certain amount according to how many % being used.

Got a call from the shop today, the Michelin rep was in town. Nice guy who immediately inspected the cracking pair in front, before proceeding to inspect the non-issue back tyres too when I reached the shop.
After that he asked a few questions on how often I drove, what tyre pressure I am applying, where I normally parked (in shade/under sun). He commented that even with the defects, the tyres will still be usable until the end of life, albeit with more noise, but will still be able to disperse rain water properly in wet conditions.
When I asked if this issue could be a manufacturing defect, he denied it. However he allowed me to claim based on the remaining life of the tyres (initial tread height minus current tread height), which comes up to RM40 per tyre. rolleyes.gif . As long as I changed into another set of Michelins

In short I claimed the warranty and changed into XM2s. Yes, still giving Michelin another shot, hope that this set turns out well.

please also check the condition of your absorber. My camry's Goodyear Assurance Fuelmax and NEXEN N6000 suffered the same fate as your tyres. Upon checking it was the worn absorber's fault.
