waiting for prices to drop.

Heck maybe in 5 years, can get a 512gb or 1tb ssd on the cheap  drool.gif  That is what i'm mostly waiting for before upgrading a ssd into the empty m.2 slot (presumably this port is future proof for ssd as far i know)  nod.gif

In my spec sheet it says my 1tb hdd comes with a 8gb ssd hybrid. Does that mean the OS is installed in the 8gb ? confusing, how to check lelz  rclxub.gif I'm not too familiar with hybrid drives.
*
It won't drop so fast I think. Even it will most probably still be around RM500 range.
By that time there most probably will be drive faster than SSD. I think during that time, you most likely will switch to a new laptop already. gtx860m hardly can play the current high demanding games already, I can't imagine in 5 years time. haha
It will be installed in the fastest drive/cache.

P.S: Sorry I'm not Acer Nitro user, you need to consult those Acer user for the FN key stuff

it's FN+F9 to toggle the keyboard backlight.

I'm the only gamer in my family so i don't mind the lights lelz, but the others they don't like it  smile.gif  now got solution.
anyone know how i can manage the graphics on this acer laptop ?

i read because of dual gpu, only can use 1 at a time. or setup a profile to auto depending on application used.

so how do i just switch to the nvidia gpu ? i couldn't find any documentation on this  icon_question.gif
*update

think i found it.

Under nvidia control panel, manage 3d settings.

it has a preferred graphics processor auto, nvidia or internal gpu. I'm not sure how effective auto works, so i just set prefer nvidia.
*update

i don't think it works correctly. because in the taskbar there is the icon for nvidia says no gpu activity. also under nvidia control panel applications for mpc, it says preferred intel and it's greyed out not sure why :/
under applications, its split between some apps under auto will select nvidia/intel (not sure how they decided that), then the other options is preferred nvidia or intel manually selected.

Anyway my hearthstone is locked on nvidia so no problem.

The problem is MPC-HC which is locked on intel. How do i change this ? It's greyed out  icon_question.gif
*
Try not to use dual gpu, cause most of the time it is referred to SLI. (well at least for me)
From what I read, I guess you really are a newcomer in gaming right ? Or at least in the technology.
First, if you don't know what you're trying to do, just leave everything to default. By default, your nvidia gpu will be in use when you're playing games or using software like Photoshop. In normal usage, like Browsing website or Office work, it won't be using it. It will use the integrated Intel card.
If you change everything to use Nvidia gpu, your laptop battery will drain very fast as nvidia gpu use up more power. It may also lead to your laptop being a bit warmer compared to when using intel card.

no i don't mean SLI. i meant the laptop has 2 gpus, one is intel and the other is nvidia 860m.

but the problem is HC-MPC which i use to watch movies is defaulted to intel integrated. It's greyed out and locked :{ can't change to nvidia.

It shouldn't be using intel integrated for mpc media playback :{ i donno how to fix that.

this definitely would explain the dropped frames when playing a hl5.1 10bit encoded 1080p anime of redline. Even with medium settings on KCP codec pack  rclxub.gif
*update

managed to find someone else with this specific issue
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/52...issue/?offset=9

apparently nvidia driver locked this setting for media players like vlc, and mpc. Why they do this i don't know.
but what someone said caught my eye
the other solution they mentioned is renaming the mpc.exe to something else, then adding a profile for the renamed mpc.......
Or actually i can try reinstall the gpu drivers by using DDU and install intel first, before nvidia and see if that fixes the issue.
*
I see no reason to use nvidia gpu in watching video. Does the frame rate really affect the experience and clearness of the anime you're watching ? Resolution doesn't matter I believe.
If you really want to make it use nvidia gpu, I think you need to tweak some settings, which goes beyond convention clicking few buttons to settle the issue. I don't recommend installing old driver, it will have lots of issue when you're playing frequently released or current games.

actually i'm getting massive frame drops in mpc when it uses the intel gpu. i think that is a valid enough reason to want to use the nvidia gpu for video playback  smile.gif

i did some research on how to go about doing that.

In nvidia inspector can force it to make mpc use nvidia gpu. this worked however i get a 2nd issue, which is a black screen.

looking further it's either a nvidia optimis driver issue, or a madvr issue. either way, neither has come up with a fix. madvr by madashi in a previous release did try to fix the issue for nvidia optimus, but it doesn't seem to fix it for me.

By the way i was using kawaii codec pack MPC version.

In the end i switched to kawaii codec pack mpc-BE version. also i changed the
video renderer in mpc-be to video mixing 9 renderless which seems to work without issue.

From my video playback testing using a 1080p 10bit hl5.1 encoding profile video redline anime, i do not notice any stutter or frame drops. is very smooth. and this is on KCP highest preset.

Though to be fair i think highest preset had MADVR in mind ......

But in the filter, lav video/audio/splitter, xysubfilter, reclock all loaded. only thing missing was madvr.
That is the best i can do for now until either nvidia driver or madvr come up with a fix for this issue  hmm.gif
In summary

1. can use MPC-BE using nvidia 860m maxwell 2gb vram to watch my videos
2. no stutter, lag, drop frames watching high profile video encoded content

downside
1. can't use madvr for now. but considering all the other filters i needed work, i'll live  smile.gif  though i hope either nvidia or madvr come up with a fix.
2. in a separate matter, i read nvidia optimus will switch between intel and nvidia for youtube. but i did not observe this, so i manually set chrome to use nvidia. So not sure if switching auto for youtube is true or not :/ but i would have preferred that. But for now i'll use HWmonitor to check the temperature.

PS: i used DDU to cleanly reinstall intel and nvidia drivers to their latest version. also total uninstall to uninstall KCP, as well as ccleaner to fix the registry during this entire test try process  smile.gif

Can't you just download a different video with different encoding ? sweat.gif
For me, even I'm watching blu ray 1080p movies, the video is smooth enough for me to not realize any fps drop and screen tearing. Does having a different encoding format makes the video nicer ? I personally find that there is not much different besides the obvious file size. Your laptop is not meant to be like home theater-like machine, so I think having a very good quality video + audio file format is not necessary. You still won't feel the strong bass, can't see much different in 15'' screen.

P.S: Maybe I'm not so into video stuff. Sorry about that sweat.gif

Uh.... no ? lel. I'm not going to download 720p 8bit content for anime, when there is 1080p 10bit ....  it's kinda like telling an audiophile who listens to flac to instead listen to mp3s  rclxub.gif

i don't belittle others who like mp3s ... but to each their own. In this case it doesn't make sense why i would buy a nvidia gpu laptop and not be able to use it for my video media playback  smile.gif
the acer don't have a woofer like the illegear z5. i don't mind. what bothers me though was the consistent and huge frame rate drops at medium settings on KCP  rclxub.gif  I think even lowest setting also the same.

BUt to be fair i think it's a bug in either madvr, or nvidia driver, i'm not sure which is the culprit. Madashi who develops madvr said in a previous release he fixed the black screen issue but it isn't so. Using the latest madvr and nvidia drivers (clean install).

Even my solution i end up not being able to use madvr, as i'm resorting to MPC-BE/KCP with renderer EVR-CP as a temporary and still acceptable solution for now. But at the very least now after using nvidia inspector i can use nvidia gpu for playback on either MPC-HC or MPC-BE.

Now watching videos using mpc i don't see any frame rate loss, which is pretty much what concerned me the most out of this debacle  smile.gif
no problem  smile.gif

Doesn't there exist a different encoding for 1080p ? Why don't you try to search whether there is other encoding for 1080p instead of sticking to the current one. I'm not into video encoding stuff so I can't help you on it.
What I know is, it is most probably one of the party issue. Be it nvidia or madvr. But you really can't expect much from your laptop, even Z5 also. You can't get the experience like Home Theater with a budget "gaming" laptop. It is called gaming for a reason. Nvidia tends to focus more on gaming side. I'm not sure whether your video player will be utilizing the CUDA core or not.

well the encoding isn't the issue cause i can playback just fine on my desktop. the issue here is the media playback configuration issue due to faulty software that doesn't work correctly in this case affecting optimus laptops which have a combo of intel + nvidia gpus (in my case a 860m maxwell)

yeah it's not really an acer specific thing, because it seems this 860 issue is also affecting other branded laptops. Or more accurately any laptop solution with a dynamic switching similar to nvidia optimus technology, when it works in conjunction with say intel integrated gpu.

i think even ati is affected somewhat, though i didn't look too much into that. As to what exactly causes this in madvr i can't pin down, i only regurgitate what others mentioned on that.

Also the issue isn't in regards to budget gaming laptop. the issue is software  smile.gif

Anyway i'll notify madashi on doom9 forum and see if he can work this out. i'll post a fix if it ever comes along  biggrin.gif
*
I see. Doesn't there exist a lot of video player software ? Why not try switching to a different software sweat.gif

G501JW is more expensive since its ultra slim gaming notebook with dual fans cooling.
New Y50 is using FHD TN display panel, wish they don't use the budget TN panel like the old model.
Y50 in US all using IPS FHD panel, China and MY still using TN FHD panel.    laugh.gif

New Y50 lower their retail price might be due to competition from Acer V nitro and other.
*
The new ROG is using IPS panel ? Lenovo thread said the refreshed model should be using a better TN panel. So I assume it will be like normal TN panel quality which is fine. Besides that, I believe dual channel 16gb cost > IPS
panel.

Y50 is also using dual fan cooling. Thickness wise, isn't both also 20mm+- ? It is almost about the same thickness sweat.gif
But storage wise, I think Y50 lose cause there is only 1 storage option. No mSata or m2 slot.

If slim is an option, I think HP Omen is also quite good. Its built quality is really as of premium class. I tested it out, the casing and design is really of premium level. Doesn't feel like consumer grade laptop. (The price is also ridiculously overpriced sweat.gif)

HAHAHA doh.gif Yea I meant 20mm+-
Thanks for pointing out.
HP Omen quality is really like a premium laptop, just the spec doesn't pair up with the price sweat.gif

Omen do come with large SSD. Price wise, it is on in the same range as the ROG 501 which I do not see anyone calling it overpriced (same class as the MSI slim Ghost series).

Isn't the 512gb version more expensive than G501JW ?

Guys if i can get omen maxed out specs (512 ssd and 16gb ram with gtx 860 4g) for 5k should i get it instead of asus 501jw with 2nd specs 128 ssd n 1TB hdd with gtx 960m 2gb..same price
*
If both are the same price and you really don't want to opt for better gpu laptop with that price range, I will go for omen cause of its larger SSD and 16gb. 860m vs 960m not much different in performance.
But do note, IIRC omen only have 1 storage option, you can't add in other SSD or HDD so you will be tied to 512gb SSD forever except you swap it with larger SSD.

Hey every sifu,

Im looking for a portable laptop (max budget 4.2k)~

currently interested on
-PE60
-GE60
-GP60
-Lenovo Y50
-Asus G551

I will be travelling a lot, hence the laptop has to be portable. Usage will be on AutoCaD, Photoshop, and some gaming like NBA2k~ can anyone recommend which shud i get? The display is also another factors as I'm doing design-related works..

I heard gud reviews about illegear  Z5, but the laptop seems abit overweight >.<
*
If you need good screen, I think Y50 you may exclude it from the list. Most of these laptop you listed weight around 1.9 - 2.4kg.. To be honest, there is not much different once you're carrying it in a backpack..
You may consider Z5 or Q5 or MSI PE60 cause the spec are quite similar and it is all up to your personal preference. I will avoid GE60 cause its previous batch is having heat issue.

i am a y510p user. i posted here is because the lenovo specific discussion thread is kinda dead, so i hope someone might b able to enlighten me here. Recently, my laptop went for repair and the shop exchanged a new motherboard for me. now, my laptop says it cannot activate windows. may i know why? is it that w8.1 license key is encoded on the motherboard unlike win7 which has a sticker at the back of laptop and the new motherboard does not have authentic license key?
*
Most laptop windows come as OEM version, and most likely it is tied to your MOBO. I'm not sure whether your laptop is retail version or OEM version, try ask the service center for a new key or ask them to activate for you. As long as your previous laptop is using genuine version, they should replace you with a new one. (But not upgrading it, if you're using Windows 7, they will replace Windows 7 for you not Windows 8 or 8.1)

Request for a new activation of Windows from your service provider. Since you claim for your warranty and they replaced your mobo, they should also give you the OS together.

By right they SHOULDN'T charge you any extra charge for the OS activation / OS key.

P.S: But you need to make sure your version of OS. Either OEM (tied to mobo or not) or Retail version
