Movie based pirating is different than games. People pirate DVDs and Blu-rays because pirated ones provide DTS5.1/Dolby 7.1 and Lanun Bay only has shitty compressed audio.. unless you download lossless FLAC ones which will make the file size shoot up to like 50GB. Ain't nobody gonna download that with our speed.
Games... Many Malaysians STILL do not trust online payment.. I have lots and lots of friends that refuse to use Steam to buy stuff simply because they are afraid of paying online, scared of getting hacked and stuff like that.
I still remember buying GTA4 when it came out at RM10 per disc.. TWICE. 4 discs x2 is already RM80. Granted that time Steam is still small and retail copies are freaking expensive.
I still pirate games to test them out, if I like it i'll buy them. I don't know why devs and pubs don't provide demo versions anymore, so I have to resort to pirating it first. Pirating really does not equal to lost sales. Statistics have shown that pirating actually increases sales because of increased exposure.
Steam Still so many pirates in Asia?, Only 3% of Steam sales from SE Asia
