Hello guys! I am sorry if this question has been asked more than several times here. I am about to finish my A-levels and wish to proceed into engineering (Chemical)

However I am unsure of which uni to enrol to, I intend to study locally for 4 years and MAYBE opting to do Master's overseas.

I will be entering a private uni, btw.

I am unsure if it is worth spending extra money (by 40k at least) to enter the more premier private universities instead of just settling for slightly cheaper unis (like my uni, UCSI which I am considering)

My main question is, since unis like UCSI are recognised by BEM and Washington Accord, does it affect our marketability to find jobs? I understand that it also boils down to your communication skills, portfolio and the way you handle your interviews, but I am very curious if graduating from say Nottingham would give a person a higher advantage than someone who graduated from UCSI or UTAR (assuming all graduates get good CGPA's)

Would it also affect your salaries?

I know this question is really stupid to ask, but I would appreciate it if anyone could weigh in on this! I'm asking this mainly because I am trying to not burden my family too much by going to a more expensive uni when I could just take an alternative route instead which would have me end up at the same destination point.

smile.gif Thank you.

Oh, also comparing the uni I have in mind's fees:

UCSI 4 years for roughly RM 80k (20k p.a)
Monash Sunway is RM40k per year. It's very scary...

Also, I'd like to add that my current goal would be to enter OnG sector after I'm done with my degree.

Hi there. A piece of advice or so.

My experience in the industry tells me that the name of university does matter in Malaysia. Many big companies especially the big ones are very particular on the university you have graduated from when you're looking for your first job. Having said that, this is perfectly reasonable because prior to your first job, they have nothing to judge you except your university and your CGPA.

Now, putting things into perspective, some universities do grant an easier route to the oil and gas industry. But I wouldn't say its impossible to chase your dream (money apparently) if you have graduated somewhere else. If you're good enough, you will eventually make it.

The question is, would you spend the additional money your parents labored on so that you can make life a little easier for you when you graduate?
P.s. Im a chemical engineering graduate too.

sometimes I find that it's not only the fees/reputation of the university.
it's also about the people you will meet.
in a premium university, you either meet top notch sponsored students or rich fags. either way they are a more sophisticated bunch.

You're right. Famous university does matter in finding job in M'sia.

TS,
I think graduate from Nottingham will be a great advantage.
Sorry, never heard of UCSI for my life. I graduated from IPTA, only heard few IPTS before.

Just my advice, I've observed that any advantage a job applicant may hope to achieve by attending a brand name university is highly diminished if your results are below average. Which sounds fair, except that there usually is a correlation between university rank and course rigorousness. Unfortunately, there is no such correction factor in use by companies to give fair evaluation, and of course no one really cares. To the average HR, a 3.00 from Tier 4 Uni equals a 3.00 from a Tier 1 Uni. I've affectionately coined an abbreviation for the particular group I'm in, the F.O.O.G's (F**ked-Over Overseas Graduates)

Tldr; "premier" status university helps only if you're confident of scoring above average. Which average? The overall Malaysian average, not your university average.

Here is the rating of the local University in Malaysia, from T1 to T6.

Indeed, you are right, lower tier uni have grade inflation, so the students can be "competitive" when graduated.
They are producing a lot of first class honour in the market, like a paper mills. sad.gif
Some MNC specifically recruit graduates from certain university.
The grading system and university not necessary can represent the quality of some students.

An well established IPTA will always organize the career fair at the end of the semester and many big giant company will have a booth there to recruit their top notch student. I was graduated from UTM and I can see every time the career fair, it attracted most of the big MNC company like Shell, Schlumberger, Haliburton, Baker Hughes, BP, and many OnG company that you can named. They even scheduled few rounds of interviews in the campus directly to screen the candidates.

I guess so. Both my ex companies actually hire a lot of my university mates, they seem to be fond with the graduates from the university.
