Hi Guys,
my friends and I plan to backpack to Kansai & Tokyo for 11 days.

a) Guide or no guide
Just wondering though, especially for Kansai area (Kyoto & Osaka),
for a first time visitor - is it advisable to tour the place on our own or should we hire a guide? We wanted to appreciate the cultural and history values of these places, will bringing a travel book bout Japan do the trick?

b) Budget
How much did you spend at Japan (on food, accomodation, train, goodies)?

What about at Tsukiji Market? The sushis and transportation fees?
Sorry, am a noob here ~_~; Had googled around, but I think local input would be best.

Hi,

Hello guys, I'm planning for a trip to Japan

Just want to ask, will RM5k of expenses be a bit of a stretch for a 2 weeks trip? Or it's safe to up the budget a bit.

I've not decided where or when to go yet, but I'm planning to go do some sight seeing, taking photographs and such. Living and eating won't be a major concern, so I'll be okay with staying in budget hotels and such.

Oh and I'm planning for a solo trip.
*
Guy,

If you can accomodate a backpacker travel style, it should be no problem.
I assume yrs budget is exclude air-fare. 7 day in Tokyo+ 7 day in Kansai area
(Osaka+ Kyoto+ Nara)

Let cal:-

Accomodation, Back packer dorm, RM90X14=RM1260
food for a day, RM12+RM12+RM17=RM41 x14day =RM574
transportaion cost=RM960+ for a JR pass
others train pass=RM900-RM1k, if u want economy c/w relaxing
travelling time for look see look see, take a slow train, it alot more cheaper.

Then, you willl left RM1206+/- to plan arround, then you can choose some really good place
to visit, like Disneyland or Disneysea, Fuji Mountain etc, entrance ticket for some musuem or park.
Personally i felt that, it shall be workable , one a while can have some good meal,
Try to read more on this forum, it will help u to reduce yrs stress on budget.

I had brought my AA Ticket to Kansai Area (return)for about RM650.
Travel date=Mid of May '14, purchase on Jan 2014.

U need check the AA website when they having ticket promotion.
U can get better offer if they is a new route being created by AA.

For matta's fare ticket, u get 33% off from normal fare ticket.
Frankly speaking, i have stop going to matta fair hunting for discount
ticket since AA start the operation in Malaysia.

Hi guys, a quick question.

For the Haruka and Icoca pass, can I like buy the Kyoto to Kansai Airport at day 1, use the Icoca for the rest of my 10 days trip, then only activate the Haruka ticket from Kyoto back to Kansai Airport?

My initial plan was use the 7 days JR pass first at the airport > Kyoto/Osaka > Tokyo, as our first trip is lto Tokyo first.

Any ideas? I've read the guide the JR west provided but doesn't seem have the answer. The only concern is single trip only have 1 day validity.
*
I have read from the Icoca & Haruka website,
it state that the return Haruka ticket are valid for 2 weeks.
It means that you can use it when you reach KIX at day 1,
and re-use it on last day when you depart from KIX.

For your case, more logical way is buy the Icoca & Haruka (returned) at KIX,
use it at day 1 to take the Haruka to Osaka/Kyoto. Once you decise
travel to Tokyo, then active your 7 day JR-pass to ride JR train ,
u can use the JR pass in tokyo city as well. Remember to complete
the Tokyo route within 7 day and comeback to Osaka/Kyoto. In Kyoto
you can use Icoca card (assume yrs JR pass have expired) to buy the
local train ticket. Alternatively, u can buy a daily bus ticket to travel
arround. At last day , u can utilise yours Haruka card to return to airport.

Another question i need to raise up here is that, for the Haruka
ticket puchase through this package, is that compulsary to reserve
the seat? Or this is include into the package without extra
seat fee?

my trip will be 5 days..
1st day osaka namba (arive around 8am)
2nd day go to kyoto by shikansen back to osaka by normal train
3rd day normal train to osaka - kyoto - nara
4th day osaka bay
5th day yodobashi camera (flight at 4:30 so after lunch have to go to kix)

maybe i could skip ginkakuji temple to spend more time at nara??
*
Bro,
Actually u should include Kinkakuji(Golden temple) in yrs second day, after
Karasyiyama, and have a tour/dinner at the Pontocho dining area before
proceed to Gion for night view/ hunting.

For 3 rd day, u can skid the Ginkakuji (silver temple) and have a look
on the Nishiki market.

Hi guys, actually already bought tickets to Tokyo & Kyoto end of this year.

However, my gf's parents have been making alot of fuss, saying that tokyo still has radiation, unhealthy.

Recently my relatives have also been saying that there is still harmful radiation.

Anyone here can confirm that tokyo is actually safe to go? Thanks alot.
*
If your GF too scare, then just make a change to Kyoto /Osaka and
it surrounding area. Then, you won 't burnt yours air ticket and
have a worryless holiday.

Thank you... oh no... i change to cash 300k yen already. As alot of place i stay dont accept card. Oh my. But just for contingency plan in case I'm lost.

*
Dear Alone female traveller,

Just a friendly reminder to share, try to re-calculate the actual cash
need to bring for your Japan trip, try to bring about 20% more from
actual need only. Standby a CC for any contingency plan instead of cash.

Is an inviting crime act by bring too much cash into a country that you never
travel before. Moreover, it a burden for you to takecare a bunch of cash which
was not utilise during yr travel. Please travel with smart and common sense in mind.

Hey guys, I'll be at Kyoto in a few more days. To those who just came back from Japan, what do you wear? Long sleeves or just short sleeves? I'm planning to wear 2 layers of long sleeves t-shirt in daytime with a normal cardigan at night. Is this too much or not enough? I heard that it's cold at night. fyi, I have average tolerance to coldness.
*
Hi, i am going to Kansai area for 6D5N starting 16 May,
i think the weather will be warm, T shirt
plus short pant at day time, a jacket for backup only.

like taikor regentcid mentioned, you really should go to Nara, if for nothing else but to let your kids feed the deer.

Dear cluesslees@07,

they are 1200 deers in the Nara and surround Park, I am sure your kids will like it, and it
totally free, you need to buy deer cracker to feed the deers only. icon_idea.gif

Japan have a lot of 7-11, almost every street.
Does all 7-11 have ATM machine?
Hardly see 7-11 in Osaka & Kyoto have this facilities.
Can u enlighten us more on this?
