although google maps cant be save
1) u can pre-cache it by scrolling around the area
and dont close the apps and let it run in background
2) bookmark/star/fav the locations
3) goto nearest 7-11, they have free wifi... starbuck suck
4) the search navigation will not work, coz it required you to go online
but u can still get the pre-routed route working before you depart

Actually what I notice is this. When you open an area on G Maps, it's automatically cached and you can reopen same area offline later. But I'm not sure how long it remains in cache though.

So what you can do is, before leaving hotel in the morning (or the night before), open the maps of areas you would be going, so that they are cached. Then close Maps, no prob. When you are out of the hotel, with no internet, open G Maps and you should be able to view offline the maps you open/cached in the hotel.

If unsure, test it here in KL first. Open say, KLCC area on G Maps, then close everything. Go offline, re-open G Maps and go to KLCC area. The map viewed before should re-appear.

this will oni work if the area of your visiting is nearby...
from my experience... i hv precache over 100km from my location to destination
if i close the apps, ALL cache will be deleted... (half-way point)
tat one of the mistake i did

---
i also didnt precalculate the petrol consumption... and didnt bookmark the petrol station too
during my time in hokkaido (asahikawa to sapporo), the petrol light is blinking for half and hours
and all the hallucination start to hunting me... hahaha
at tat time i only know, japan very hard to find petrol station
ps: rental car have eng gps, but the searching result is in japanese... the eng guidance is very limited

I still don't see the point in caching offline google maps for holidaying in Japan. The main navigation you would use smartphone for is subway directions, train schedules, prices, etc which all need data. If no data and just have a map, you go nearest subway station might not be correct cos that particular line not directly going to another station that you wanna go, etc, no?

if ur walking destination is more than 15mins, u need gps!
if ur visiting destination is unconventional, u need gps!!

during my time in osaka,
im searching for yellow giant duck which is park at certain shipyard, hidden from public eyes...
without additional guide, aka gps... i dont think i able to reach the destination in time (the shipyard close very early)

No need any GPS if you done enough homework.  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif
I go Japan 15 Years ago no such shit is call GPS.  From 1st day i step into Tokyo until all placed I visit on my Signature.  No single GPS been used.   Learn from homework + experience + alot of times of failure.  15 years ago no even got Internet.  No Google Maps also.

Only read from Book.  The Book without any Picture

Alright! biggrin.gif Will make my book as a guide then.
My trip will be in April and I'll be backpacking.

So far, we already have the accommodations and flight tickets covered.
Won't be needing JR pass, will be buying tickets at the machine instead tongue.gif

We have few places in mind (but exploring osaka in 1 day, i wonder if that's doable) and kyoto the next 2 days.
We have Tokyo to ourselves (as if!) for the next 6-7 days too!!  rclxm9.gif

sweat.gif It's Feb and I can really feel the tension already... hahaha...

Ok, thanks again!

the price for overnight bus is almost same as renting an apartment for 1 night (per person, that is...)

if don't have JR pass then it's very affordable, but if traveling to more than 1 place (e.g. Osaka - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo - Osaka) just can't beat JR pass.

personally, i can't sleep on a moving vehicle, so overnight bus is not for me.

First, you haven't try willer express.  That comfort are excellent.  Price from Kyoto to Tokyo just 4000 yen

i used to travel to KL<->JB/Spore EVERYWEEK
luxury coach is comfortable as the seat is wider and can lean further and less shake (RC is correct)

How about navigation? Do the car rental ppl provide GPS in English? Or have to use our own maps in tablet/smartphone. Thanks
*
Yeah with GPS, but warning eng gps is not fully english
the search result is still in japanese

fyi, the POI for japanese gps is based on the TEL#
if the POI is unsearchable, it will navigate u to City/Town Council
this will be problem

TIPS: use google maps and bookmark your location before u depart!

thanks for the feedback
i think i'll take the Osaka-Hokkaido route on the Twillight Express
then the normal bullet train when heading to Tokyo

Current high level plans is Kansai (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara) --> Hokkaido --> Tokyo, spending around 12-13 days there
*
if u r in osaka, recommended to take peach airlines
cheaper and save time

after some research on japan.. really pening  rclxub.gif can't decide which is better..  plan to go 12 days (or lesser?) to japan but i'm not sure whether enough to cover those attractions or not

Tokyo + Osaka or Tokyo & it nearby surrounding only?

or should i focus on 1 place only and others on next trip?

i knew that the distance between Tokyo & Hokkaido is far apart but do anybody go to Tokyo + Hokkaido? money wise definitely not cheap  hmm.gif
*
Hokkaido is really depend on the season,
each attraction hv their own uniqueness depend on the season
mean, u hv to skip it if u go during the wrong season sweat.gif

i went during autumn, i think i use 8days
can see mountain top cover with snow and below it is yellow autumn leaf (forest)... really stunning thumbup.gif
the oni regret didnt managed to see sunflower farm

You cannot get Sakura at March
April or May

2014 Sakura open at Ends of April & Early of may
*
i tot sakura oni blooms for 1 weeks tongue.gif

anyway for those want to view cherry blossom, this is the tips
mean if u arrive early/before sakura season... u need to travel to south of japan
if u r late... go north!!!

CODE
from wikipedia ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_blossom
Every year the Japanese Meteorological Agency and the public track the sakura zensen (cherry blossom front) as it moves northward up the archipelago with the approach of warmer weather via nightly forecasts following the weather segment of news programs. The blossoming begins in Okinawa in January and typically reaches Kyoto and Tokyo at the end of March or the beginning of April. It proceeds into areas at the higher altitudes and northward, arriving in Hokkaidō a few weeks later.

read that autumn seems like not a good choice to visit Hokkaido if i plan to do some skii activities?

if go around end of Mar to beginning of Apr thought of kill 2 birds with 1 stone example like see Sakura in Tokyo and Snow (skii activities) in Sapporo/Otaru.. possible?

so mid to late Nov visit Osaka + Kyoto (eg Tofukuji) can view koyo right?
*
sorry cant answer this, all ur activity is really "season based"
u have to adjust ur timing accordingly...

my activity oso like tat.
i adjust my itinerary on the last week b4 i depart tongue.gif
no joking!!! sweat.gif
mean, my hotel is book 1day in advanced... i did it day per day basic
(yes, my accommodation is from guesthouse to premium type tongue.gif)

the result is rewarding
i able to do scuba dive in okinawa (whale share icon_rolleyes.gif ) and still managed to catch autumn foliage in jozankei, hokkaido

happy backpacking thumbup.gif
