Hello guys, I'm planning for a trip to Japan

Just want to ask, will RM5k of expenses be a bit of a stretch for a 2 weeks trip? Or it's safe to up the budget a bit.

I've not decided where or when to go yet, but I'm planning to go do some sight seeing, taking photographs and such. Living and eating won't be a major concern, so I'll be okay with staying in budget hotels and such.

Oh and I'm planning for a solo trip.
*
Including or excluding airfare? To which city / cities?

Transportation is a major part of costs, after accomodation.

Hi guys,

Just wondering to budget for 600-700 yen per meal is it viable?

Those who went to tokyo before, how much you guys spend per meal?
*
Keep an eye out for Yayoi-ken.

Unlimited rice and tea refill when you order set. My favorite is the Saba (mackerel), big piece for 590 yen.

Places like Nakau are also reasonable.

Mine will be Malaysia > Nagoya > Shirakawa > Gero Onsen > Takayama > Toyama > Kanazawa > Osaka > Malaysia

Nagoya > Shirakawa > Gero Onsen > Takayama > Toyama  All under one Line JR Hida Limited Express
Toyama > Kanazawa > Osaka  all under one Thunderbird Limited Express

We're picking up a car in Nagoya. I prefer to drive than wait for trains/buses haha.

Also because train/bus service to Hakuba is quite troublesome, and we have business there.

I've planned to go and visit Shirakawago from Nagoya but I realised the journey to there is pretty long(nagoya to takoyama then bus to Shirakawago). Seems to me that its like a whole day trip. Is it really worth going?
*
Why not rent a car? Nagoya to Shirakawa-go is only 2 hours 15 mins by car. You can rent a small car for around 5000 yen a day from Nissan Rentalcar @ Tocoo.

Do we need like international license to drive..now it seems like more fun to drive around JP..
*
Yes, just bring your Msian driving license to JPJ and they'll issue you a 1 year international for RM180?

Driving around Japan is quite relaxing once you get out of the cities, roads are empty and the traffic moves fast.

Thanks for the suggestion its tempting but i dont have the time to go jpj my trip's next week already.

My plans are like this:

Day 1: Nagoya
Day 2-4: Tokyo
Day 5: Nagoya side trip(Takayama/Gifu)
Day 6: Morning around Nagoya before going to Chubu for flight back in the evening

So shirakawago is kinda like out of the question as it would take me one whole day. T.T
*
If you dont have time to go Shirakawa-go, then you can consider Tsumago and Magome. Only 1.5 hours away from Nagoya by train / bus.

is it illegal to sleep at the airport and wait until 5:30 am to continue my travel?
*
Usually the guards will chase you away, except for certain designated areas.

If budget is an issue, you can consider staying at the 24 hour lounge/internet cafe.

Just bought a 9 day trip to Japan for next year Jan for snowboarding!

Anyone can give me a preliminary idea for lodging prices and food prices i shld be expecting in the winter in Hakuba (if anyone has experience visiting there)

got well over half a year to start doing my research, probably shld start picking up simple jap phrases too
*
Budget per person per night?? I'm quite familiar with Hakuba, go there every year.

Yea, roughly

Am going alone as none of my friends snowboard, so I'm quite easy with regards to lodging.

I'm trying to work out a reasonable budget for my entire stay, where I plan to buy lift passes for the full period of time i'm there.

Am bringing my own snowboarding gear, so I won't have to rely on rental.

So I guess I need your opinion on reasonable places to stay and what sort of prices I should be expecting to pay per night if possible smile.gif have never been to Japan before so I have no idea what sort of prices I should be expecting.

My flight arrives on the morning of the 17th and I'll be staying till the 26th, so I guess that makes 10 nights?

How's the snowboarding scene there? Will I need to learn alot of japanese to get around easily or can I make do with signage? lol

Thanks a bundle!

Which airport are you flying into? Chubu or Haneda/Narita?

For single traveller, quite a lot of options. Cheap dorm room starts from 3,500 yen, sharing with 3 other people. Shared toilet. If you want something nicer, can stay in nice B&B / lodge for around 8,000-10,000. Top end ski-in ski-out is 18,000 per night.

If you're bringing your own gear, then you can consider shipping it to your hotel from the airport, unless you're going straight to Hakuba.

If you're a boarder, then you can also consider staying in Goryu/47 instead of Happo-One, its more boarder friendly.

Hakuba is popular with gaijins so plenty of English signage, and almost everyone will speak English. You won't have problems getting around.

However, it is a very spread out town, so location is key. Make sure your accomodation is either:
a.) Close to the town and slopes
b.) Close to shuttle bus stop
c.) Provides transport to and fro to the slopes.

I'll be flying into Nagoya - Chubu.

I think I'll be going for dorm rooms, and maybe splurge the last few days on a nice B&B in that case. smile.gif

Yeap, I have my own gear, but I will probably be going straight to Hakuba from the airport, so I can just carry it along? Or is it better to have it shipped?

I'm a boarder so I will definitely keep that in mind! thanks for the tip!

Icic, in that case I think I'll only have to worry about getting to Hakuba in that case.

So ideally I should find accomodation near Goryu / 47 for the best experience? Any recommendations based on ur past experience there?  smile.gif

Thank you a lot for the advice and tips, really appreciated!  notworthy.gif
Haha, yeah, I'll be checking it religiously for quite awhile to compare prices I guess.
Thanks a lot for the directions! Now to write it down somewhere so I don't forget!  notworthy.gif

You can carry your luggage along, but full gear + luggage might be a bit of handful on trains. Depends on how fit you are haha.

Actually, since you're staying there for 9-10 days, you can also consider staying at 2 different places. 4 days each in Happo-One and another 4 days in Goryu/47 will let you experience more terrain.

If you can afford it, Pension Funny Inn is my personal pick for a Japanese B&B. The owners are awesome and the breakfast is amazing. Downside is the location is a bit neither here nor there. (It's near Echoland). The dinner is also worth paying for.

Asuka is a good location for cheap rooms in Happo: http://www.asukalodgehakuba.com/en/ski-lodge-rates
Very good location near the gondola

Goryu/47 I have no experience, always stayed in Happo.

Food in Hakuba is generally of a very high standard, and not really that expensive.

Kikyo-ya for example serves really good sushi, and their Chirashi Don starts at 1500yen, with lots of sashimi. Definitely cheaper than anything in Malaysia, and far better quality.

This is only for dinner anyway. Usually for lunch you'll be eating on the slopes, like Snow Plaza Sakka

http://www.snownavi.jp/geresyoku/snowplazasakka/

1000 yen for Pork Katsu Curry, perfect after a whole morning of skiing.

blink.gif  NSFW pic! Made me drool all over my keyboard! Lol

But yeah, that sounds cheap for the quality, looks like it's a week long binge jap food eating spree for me then! Haha

Another question if I may, how much should I be expecting to spend on lift pass + bus tickets to Goryu/47 & HappoOne? Again, thanks alot for the great advice!  notworthy.gif

You can google for the lift pass prices.

If you stay 4-5 days in each major resort then you wont need to use the bus much. Anyway the shuttle bus is free.

Just an idea
Do you plan to only stick to Hakuba?
Any thoughts of going Takayama?
Im no expert at snowboarding at all, but i had my 1st try at Takayama Arkopia ski-resort. http://www.arkopia.jp/
Maybe  Arkopia is not extreeme for you as its just a simple slope
But at Takayama, you can do a day trip to Shirakawago.
*From Matsumoto, you can take the Nohi bus to Takayama. http://www.nouhibus.co.jp/english/nagoya.html

When i was in Hakuba, i stayed at Hakuba Alps Backpackers. its run by a gaijin, so english is ok.
In Takayama, I stayed at Jhoppers Takayama
p/s: i dont speak/read japanese,  laugh.gif
*
Arkopia's skiable area is tiny! Don't see why anyone would go there over Hakuba for skiing.

Takayama is a nice side trip from Hakuba, I agree, but not for skiing.

That's what Hyperdia is for. Find out exactly which train you need and what time it is leaving. Doesn't work if you don't synchronize your watch to JR time though.
