Is there a public sento or onsen near kyoto station?
I'm curious to try fugu , anybody tried before? Can you tell where and average price?

Don't worry - i travelled alone too in japan. Once you overcome your own nervousness, you will find that it isnot as hard as you fear. You may get lost but just consider it part of the sightseeing. Have some basic phrases on hand - printed or on mobile. Be polite and all will go well. |

QUOTE(RegentCid @ Jan 12 2014, 02:44 PM) Can please give some details on where to find these? Is the cheapest lousy and not worth trying compared to the luxury set? Is there any middle pricing set - taste not fantastic but not lousy and lighter on the pocket? How did you find the taste? I know taste is subjective but would appreciate an opinion. Want to try but scared poisoned so some recommendation will be appreciated. |

some miscommunication here.
1st of all. I have not claimed that you said the cheapest set was lousy nor that the cheaper price means lousy. 2nd - I asked IF it was so. 3rd - I'm asking for information on fugu and do realize that it might not be cheap compared to other types of food which can/may be purchased for the same price. eg RM10/kg is cheap for Musang King durian but expensive for duku langsat. |

QUOTE(sacwoc @ Mar 10 2014, 10:35 AM) Not sure where you got this info, but CC is widely used in Japan. As long as you inform you bank that you travel overseas, there should not be any problem. No idea of withdrawing cash though as I havent done it before and its much more expensive then exchanging it in Malaysia. Indeed, i had no problem whatsoever using my credit cards in Japan and informed the issuing bank before you leave. It's the same as in Malaysia - there will be smaller shops / hotels / onsen etc that will not accept credit cards and you'll have to use cash but otherwise, Visa & Mastercard credit cards accepted widely. I'm not sure though about Amex but even in Malaysia quite a few places do not accept Amex due to their high merchant fees. |

Better bring something warm in your bag when u go out no matter how nice the weather looks when u start out
After a few days of lovely weather, i went out with just light clothing. In the afternoon, it rained heavily with strong winds n i was really cold. Beh tahan, immediately bought extra layers. |

QUOTE(zstan @ May 10 2014, 11:28 PM) It was quite understandable too as the whole temple area was pitch black and no amount of spot light can showcase the temple's glory of its own. Upon further contemplation and discussion, we decided to cancel our day trip to Nara the next day and come back here again. It is really a waste if we do not explore this place. After that we then proceeded to further the explore the place and then find a place to settle down for dinner. ooooh, the night photos really interesting, naise! DSC07376 by zstan, on Flickr DSC07384 by zstan, on FlickrApparently the Japanese are really, really conservative with their energy and lightings as the whole area was almost completely engulfed in darkness. There is hardly any lamps near the temple area. It was really scary to walk under near pitch black conditions and with not a single soul on the streets. The pictures does not do the darkness any justice as I was using a really low shutter speed and crazy high ISO for the shots. Fortunately as we got closer to Gion, there was more street lights. Having said that, we still felt really safe despite walking in the dark. DSC07394 by zstan, on Flickr DSC07394 by zstan, on FlickrOur initial plan of having dinner in Gion was called off as we were thrown back for the crazy prices of their menus. Maybe next time when I've earned enough cash to travel luxuriously. DSC07393 by zstan, on FlickrTypical restaurant around Gion area DSC07390 by zstan, on FlickrOn our way back to Kawaramachi area in search of cheaper food, we were so lucky to spot a real Geisha! Geisha's are very, very rare during the summer season since they don't perform during summer. A blurred shot but nonetheless. DSC07398 by zstan, on Flickr |

QUOTE(Human Nature @ May 11 2014, 08:21 PM) Did you notice whether the shops at higashiyama/kiyomizudera selling red torii gate magnet? U sure u want climb Fushimi Inari at night? It is not brightly lit. There is stone lanterns casting v dim light only n they are set quite far apart. If they are available, then i can push Fushimi Inari visit to night time to allow more time at higashiyama/kiyomizudera. On both sides of the path are shrines n secondary jungle. Kinda creepy. |

QUOTE(Human Nature @ May 11 2014, 09:38 PM) Not planning to climb till the hill. Just few meters into the red gates is sufficient. It has no closing time and with many shops closing early, it is a challenge to set the itinerary. yI went to Fushimi Inari in the evening - in May it was still bright. Initially i was just going to scout out the place before walking the hill but as it was bright i went further and further up. When i reached the 3rd station with the lake, i thought i would stop but met a retired Japanese couple there and they suggested i go right up to the 4th station with them. So I did. They lived at the foot of the mountain and walked the route every evening. It was twilight when we reached the foot of the hill. so you may be able to explore more than a few meters into the torii gates in the evening but check the sunset times for when you are there. Alternatively, i suggest you go in the mornings - maybe creepy factor is lesser and morning mists would be a nice mysterious factor. As for the fridge magnets, i can't really help but I did not notice the millions of souvenir stalls as in Asakusa or the way leading up + down to Kiyomizudera. Maybe they were closed when i was there but certainly no numerous stall structures there. |
