Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Announced with 4.3-inch Display, Snapdragon 800 & 20.7MP Camera

[attachmentid=3924285]
ITS ALREADY HERE!

Sony is giving the Z1 some company at the top, as it introduces the Z1 compact. Yes, don't call it a mini; Sony is very keen to distance itself from the current trend of, what it considers, watered-down versions being sold as mini-flagships. As such, the Z1 compact is almost entirely identical to the original, with the same quad-core Snapdragon 800, the same 20-megapixel camera and the same waterproof design, just this time with a 4.3-inch screen, oh, and color options! We spent a few moments with it ahead of today's announcement to find out if it lives up to Sony's "no compromise" boasts. Head past the break to find out.

Usually at this point, we'd reel off the key specifications, but in this case we're going to start with what's different between the Z1 compact and the full-fat version. Obviously, the main distinction is the screen size, down from five to 4.3 inches. Given that the whole point is to make a smaller version, this key lower specification (numerically speaking) isn't to be seen as a compromise. It's worth pointing out that the smaller (now IPS) display also brings a drop from 1080p to 720p resolution (the ppi is still a solid 340 though). The next main difference is the battery. The Z1 compact comes with a 2,300mAh cell, down from the 3,000mAh battery in the larger version, but given the lower power requirements from that reduced amount of screen, Sony is confident you'll get a similar amount of battery life overall. The Z1 compact also comes with Android 4.3 straight out of the box.

So, the rest of the specifications are just as you'd find in the original Z1. That means you get a 20.7-megapixel (1/2.3-inch) main camera, Triluminos display with X-Reality engine, 2.2GHz of Snapdragon 800 quad-core goodness, NFC (Sony isn't shy when it comes to NFC), and 16GB of onboard memory (there's a microSD card slot, too). All of the above with the same IP58 level of waterproofing -- something of an Xperia trademark these days. But what about the color options we hear you cry? Well, there's black and white for the monochrome fans, and a rather loud lime (which looked quite yellowish to us) as well as a fairly hot-pink hue. The colors look bright and bold, and even extend to the milled aluminum parts. So, where the plum-colored Z1 was broken up by the metal sections, this time around, the phone is one color throughout. The yellow lime version gets almost a goldish tone on its metal parts, and the metallic parts of the pink version also stand out.

Sony, and in particular the Xperia line of phones, isn't noted for swift and dramatic design moves, and there is unsurprisingly even less deviation this time around. It's clear the company wanted to make a mini compact version of the Z1 as faithfully as possible, and by and large, it's done just that. That said, the Z1 compact is -- gasp -- a whole millimeter thicker than its sibling, but as you can imagine, that's mostly down to cramming much of the same hardware into a more diminutive frame.

Sony has done with its mini phone what we hoped other manufacturers would do with theirs -- shrink the size of the flagship, but keep the elite lineup of specs. Mix in the waterproof, attractive design and Sony might well have a top-end Android phone for those of you who don't want their pockets stretched out by 5-inch goliaths.

Wahhh ... so fast meh? sweat.gif

Anyways, the killer for me will be the batter life reports.

Yes it's a smaller battery, but it's also a smaller and lower density screen. So, kinda hard to predict.

ya...
i think Sony should increase the battery capacity to 2300mAh smile.gif
n Z2 will released soon brows.gif

I dont mind. Most important is compact size so that can fit inside my pocket. Dont wanna carry a "Tablet" sized phone around like the Z1 or Note 3.

FYI, from 5.3" above was called Phablet la.. smile.gif
*
I know the classification. But 5' does feel like a tablet to me. I need something small and compact, thin and feels light enough to carry in my pockets. And most important I can operate it with on hand especially during driving.

Isn't it already 2300mah? sweat.gif
Well, I wouldn't call the Z1 a phablet, although it is huge.

The compact size with powerful processor and specs means it has so much spare horsepower for the future. Combine with metal casing and waterproof, should hopefully last very long. Considering I'm using the S2, it's not much of a difference in terms of size for me, so it really is tempting.
Apparently the G2 is really more efficient than the Z1, although in real life usage, I wonder if the gap is really that big? Haven't really read the battery consumption reports of users in the G2 thread.

Anyway, yeah, only issue now is battery life for me. I want a phone that lasts a day without charging.
*
I'm pretty sure with a 2300mah and a different display, the batter would last longer than the current Z1. Coupled with the KitKat 4.4 os, it should definately last more than a day with fair usage. nod.gif

Currently im using iPhone 5 n xperia z, the difference in size between btween these two r significant. For media playback, browsing n reading manga, navigation app, it is advantages withnlarger screen of my xz, however for msg and call, I prefer the iPhone 5 for very convenient one hand operation. This phone the z1 compact really tempting huhu.

Thats what Im talking about. "One hand" operation phone that fits snuggly into your pockets without the heavy and wide feel. thumbup.gif

probably 1 - 2 months after international, which is sometime in Feb? Apr - May release lor.

Apparently Sony hasn't has much new phones to launch nowadays. Im pretty sure it would not be long after the launch in Europe. I think the Malaysian market is quite update nowdays in terms of new phones and tablet launching. Just look at the Iphone 5s, we were in the 2nd quarter of launch. This shows we have some buying power around here. laugh.gif

This is Sony trademark, get use to it. tongue.gif By the way, both also looking ok, as long it not white out, Z1 compact use high quality panel IPS not like Z1, so it won't have this issue.
*
I beg to differ. Normally with new phones they have most probably addressed these issues before releasing the phone into the market.

Already registred. thumbup.gif

Abit dissapointed with the water and dust protection though as the Z1 Compact only comes with IP55 againts my Xperia Go's IP67.

Just a gentle reminder that the Xperia Z1 is only splash proof and cant be immersed in water directly.

"In stamina mode, Sony Xperia Z1 Compact lasted 41hours 31mins on average until battery exhaustion under conditions experienced by a typical smartphone user
This performance represents a leading position for Sony Xperia Z1 Compact against leading competitor Premium Compact Smartphones. The closest leading competitor device was Apple iPhone 5C (29hrs 22mins on average)."

For those worrying about battery life of the Z1 Compact need not worry now as the tests show way better than average usage for the phone. It even surpassed many phones.
For stamina mode in Sony, those not familiar with it must understand that during this mode the Data and Wifi for the phone turns off when the phone goes to sleep. This means that you wont be able to receive your Whatsapp, Viber and email notifications. But during this mode, the consumption of power by the phone is very low. Thats why the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact lasted 41hours 31mins on average until battery exhaustation.

Yes but wouldn't that activate the data/wifi and defeats the purpose for Stamina Mode? I mean during stamina mode, the phone disables all network/data and only activates it when the phone is waken up. If we were to put exception for whatsapp or email, push data will be activated and this means that network data has to be connected all the time. Though this is better than activating all android rubbish apps running in the background sending and receiving data. shakehead.gif
