Trafford: Fluffed his lines early with a clearance that was charged down but safe hands after that with plenty of catching practise. 6

Lewis: Regularly drove up the pitch, working well with Cherki and Bobb before playing the key assist for Haaland. 8

Khusanov: Some last-ditch slide tackles that bailed his team out. No nonsense at times but needed to be and he looked solid. 7

Stones: Good to see him back on the pitch and looking classy. He could form a strong pairing with Lewis if he can stay fit. 7

Ait-Nouri: A few charges forward into opposition territory but too many unforced errors that sent City backwards. 5

Gonzalez: A lot of pressure on his shoulders with Rodri not fully fit and he was okay, not really leading the game but also frustrated by some of the sloppy play around him. 6

O'Reilly: A reminder of some of the different options to cover Rodri but he was not smart on the ball and Guardiola had to have words on several occasions. 5

Bobb: Beat his man on a number of occasions while being subjected to some overly physical marking. The intent was promising. 7

Cherki: Looked to get on the ball and create whenever he could, drifting towards the right where Bobb lurked. Encouraging. 7

Marmoush: Wasn't involved enough, struggling to get on the ball and when he did there wasn't enough to it. 5

Haaland: Not involved much either but he doesn't need to be to score, as he did in the first half. 6

Substitutes

Ederson (for Trafford, 46) A few shaky moments for the defence and his collision with Dias looked clumsy. 5

Nunes (for Lewis, 46) Couldn't really get forward as he likes to do, but was solid defensively. 6

Akanji (for Stones, 46) A few misplaced passes in bad areas that put City into trouble. 5

Dias (for Khusanov, 46) There wasn't anything terrible, it just wasn't particularly convincing and he and Ederson took each other out. 5

Ake (for Ait-Nouri, 46) Had the best of his duel overall and helped push the team forward. 6

Gundogan (for Gonzalez, 46) Back in the No.6 and should have had an assist with a delicious through ball. 7

Silva (for O'Reilly, 46) Easy does it from Silva, making sure City kept control of the game with an understated performance. 6

Reijnders (for Cherki, 46) Looks the pick of the summer signings so far, able to carry a threat in attack while knowing when to push forward. 8

Savinho (for Bobb, 46) Looked good generally but squandered a really good chance. 7

Doku (for Marmoush, 46) Occasionally looked threatening on the ball but never really turned it into anything. 6

Mukasa (for Haaland, 60) Some bright runs and looked comfortable in the team, setting up Reijnders for the third. 7

Player Ratings

James Trafford – 7.5

Famed as a dependable and solid goalkeeper, and showed those qualities with an accomplished display of handling, sweeping and shot-stopping. Promising too was his pick-out of Reijnders in the build-up to City’s third goal.

Rico Lewis – 8

When City teams are at their free-flowing best, Lewis is often capable of playing a major part of it, and that was certainly true today. He moved all over from his right-back role, knitting play and assisting the opener.

John Stones – 7.5

Just seeing Stones manage 82 minutes will have been a welcome sight for City fans, and he added to that with a composed and classy showing.

Ruben Dias – 7

A slightly shaky start with a poor giveaway when play out, but he sharpened up and marshalled the defence with some signature blocking.

Rayan Ait-Nouri – 7

Can’t have been easy for the former Wolves man to instantly come up against an opponent that knows his every strength and weakness, and he did look a little ropey on occasion in defence. He rode it out though and began to show some of his quality in possession.

Nico Gonzalez – 8

Pep Guardiola’s ‘mini Rodri’ might have some more chances to impress in his fellow countryman’s absence on this basis. Missed one or two second balls but was overall a really strong presence in the middle.

Tijjani Reijnders – 9 (POTM)

Get excited, City fans. A tremendous first outing in the Premier League for the Dutchman, involving himself in the Blues’ first three goals and showing all his class.

Bernardo Silva – 7.5

Perhaps suited him to play more of a support role to the more adventurous no.8 Reijnders, allowing the captain to facilitate play and show his usual exceptional work-rate.

Oscar Bobb – 7.5

Very prominent in the first-half, combining well with Lewis and providing the assist to Reijnders. Not quite as involved in the second but still contributed effectively.

Erling Haaland – 8.5

Did what he does. Finished with ease on his first goal and more flamboyantly on his second, before being afforded an early rest.

Jeremy Doku – 6.5

Couldn’t get much change out of Hoever, unusually declining too many attempts to take on his man and instead largely playing it safe on the ball.

Substitutes

Matheus Nunes – 6

Possibly put off a little by the abrasive reception afforded him by his old team’s supporters. Did his defending but not wholly convincingly.

Nico O’Reilly – 6.5

Got his foot on it in the middle well, playing a part in the fourth goal. Strange tackle got him in the book.

Omar Marmoush – 6

Seemed to be lacking a little sharpness in front of goal, despite being involved enough.

Rayan Cherki – 7

Was brimming with confidence and that’ll only increase after a fine goal to open his account in the Premier League.

Abdukodir Khusanov – N/A

Trafford: Drama around his position but a faultless start to his senior City career with a number of good saves and excellent positioning throughout. 8

Lewis: A performance that should make City close the door on any Forest interest: shifting inside, racing back defensively, and setting up Haaland for the opener. 8

Stones: Looks fit and sharp. Put in a tremendous block in the first half to deny Strand Larsen and was comfortable carrying the ball up the pitch. 7

Dias: Nearly undone by an early error but recovered well and worked well with Ait-Nouri on the left. 7

Ait-Nouri: A quiet return to Molineux but that was no bad thing, as he smartly got himself out of a number of tricky positions. 7

Gonzalez: Possibly his best City game since the Newcastle one, he imposed himself from the start and balanced the defensive grit with driving forward. 8

Silva: Lots of clever play at both ends of the pitch to knit the team together and keep City in control. 7

Reijnders: Turned a sluggish start into a masterclass with brilliant contributions to all three goals. What a signing he looks. 9

Bobb: The best signing that isn't a signing? Back to where he was at last summer with an electric pressing presence. 8

Doku: Had some joy early on but never really did enough to trouble the Wolves defence when he did get on the ball. 6

Haaland: Led really well, made a number of runs looking to break the lines, and scored twice. He looks hungry for goals. 8

Substitutes

Nunes (for Lewis, 66) Defended well amid obvious and sustained abuse from the Wolves fans. 7

O'Reilly (for Silva, 66) Pushed up in midfield and looked more comfortable. 6

Marmoush (for Doku, 66) Plenty of running on the left. 6

Cherki (for Haaland, 73) A lovely goal to open his City account. 7

Khusanov (for Stones, 82) A quick runout.

James Trafford (7/10):

An assured City debut rewarded with a clean sheet. Will be an able deputy should, as expected, City get the Donnarumma deal done.

Rico Lewis (7/10):

An energetic display that regularly saw him joining attacks. Put the ball on a plate for Haaland to open the scoring and did his bit defensively, too.

John Stones (7/10):

Made one heroic block that stopped Strand Larsen scoring a certain goal. If he can stay injury-free it'll be huge for City and their chances of winning the title.

Ruben Dias (7/10):

Sloppy in possession at times but rock solid with his defending to help the visitors earn a clean sheet.

Rayan Ait-Nouri (6/10):

A solid if unspectacular display at his old stomping ground. Didn't offer much as an attacking threat but that was likely tactical.

Nico Gonzalez (7/10):

Crashed into challenges and carried the ball forward well in an all-action display. City didn't miss Rodri today.

Tijjani Reijnders(9/10):

A Premier League debut to remember. Played a decisive role in the opener with a jinking run and gorgeous through ball and then expertly found the corner to make it 2-0. Set-up Haaland for the third as well.

Oscar Bobb (7/10):

Showed some neat touches and his dancing feet caused problems for Wolves' defenders. Claimed an assist for Reijnders' goal after a neat turn and break away.

Bernardo Silva (6/10):

Swung in a couple of dangerous crosses but did his best work when tracking back and getting behind the ball. Hooked midway through the second half.

Jeremy Doku (5/10):

A frustrating evening for Doku, who must drive Guardiola mad with his lack of end product. Taken off not long after the hour mark having had little impact.

Erling Haaland (8/10):

Scored two more opening-day goals - that's seven in four seasons - with a tap-in and then an assured finish into the far corner. Deadly.

Subs & Manager

Omar Marmoush (6/10):

Brought on for Doku but proved to be a quiet cameo.

Nico O'Reilly (6/10):

Replaced Bernardo Silva after 66 minutes and helped keep things ticking over.

Rayan Cherki (7/10):

Replaced Haaland after 73 minutes for his Premier League debut and marked the occasion with a delightful spin, dart forward and precise finish.

Matheus Nunes (6/10):

On for Rico Lewis as part of a triple change.

Abdukodir Khusanov (N/A):

A late replacement for Stones.

Pep Guardiola (8/10):

Was fooling no one with his pre-match explanation for leaving out Ederson but that particular call paid off, with a largely untroubled James Trafford coming through 90 minutes unscathed. His signing of Reijnders looks inspired and he seems to have addressed many of the concerns of last season with the revamping of a squad that was going stale.

James Trafford - 7

Probably wouldn't have been expecting to start the match, given Ederson's position as No.1 goalkeeper. But the recent arrival didn't look out of place between the sticks, with James Trafford looking comfortable whenever called upon.

Rico Lewis - 7

Provided a delightful cross for the opening goal and remained a threat in the final third throughout the match. It could prove Lewis' final match in City blue, given Nottingham Forest are believed to be sniffing around the youngster.

Ruben Dias - 8

A successful season for City will require Ruben Dias to shine, and he looked impressive at the back for City. The Portuguese ace was criticised at times for his performances last term, but he'll no doubt be happy to put the 2024/25 campaign behind him, with full focus on the season ahead.

John Stones - 8

Another surprise name in the starting XI, as John Stones' last start for City came back in February. His previous season was marred with injury, but with the World Cup to come next summer, both Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel will be keeping their fingers crossed.

Rayan Ait-Nouri - 7

An immediate return to Wolves for Rayan Ait-Nouri, with the Algerian showing why City paid big money to bring him to the club. It's been a while since City had an out-and-out left back but it looks like they've bagged a good one.

Nico Gonzalez - 8

Had a tough task filling in for the injured Rodri but Nico Gonzalez rose to the challenge. He isn't quite Rodri level (who is?), but having a capable deputy to the Ballon d'Or winner could prove game-changing for City this season.

Tijjani Reijnders - 10

Marked his Premier League debut with a masterclass. Reijnders showed City exactly what they were missing in midfield last season, with the Dutch international slotting straight in following his move from AC Milan. Only two players have ever scored and assisted on their City debut. The other? Sergio Aguero.

Bernardo Silva - 7

By far the oldest of City's midfield three, but Bernardo Silva didn't look out of place. He was his usual Energiser Bunny self in the middle of the park and delivered a couple of testing crosses from set pieces.

Oscar Bobb - 8

After the frustration of missing most of last season, Guardiola put a show of faith in Oscar Bobb by throwing him from the off for City's opening match against Wolves. It paid off, with Bobb dazzling on the right-hand side of attack, even picking up an assist for Reijnders' goal.

Erling Haaland - 9

Did exactly what he's in the team for: scoring goals. In truth, his two goals were probably Erling Haaland's only meaningful contributions in the match, but with so much creativity behind him, it's likely the two goals will be the first of many this season.

Jeremy Doku - 6

Certainly the quietest of City's attackers, with Jeremy Doku kept under wraps by the Wolves backline. He'll be hoping for better days, especially with the competition for minutes in the City forward line this season.

Substitutes:

Nico O'Reilly - 6

Put himself about after coming off the bench, with Nico O'Reilly even picking up a yellow card for his troubles.

Omar Marmoush - 6

Operated on the left-hand side, but Omar Marmoush's only effort was a blocked free-kick.

Matheus Nunes - 6

Received a toxic reception upon his return to old stomping ground Molineux, but it didn't appear to phase Matheus Nunes.

Rayan Cherki - 8

The most impactful of the City substitutes, with Rayan Cherki steering home a gorgeous left-footed effort after a tidy piece of footwork on the edge of the box.

Abdukodir Khusanov - N/A

James Trafford- 8/10: A superb performance in goal from Trafford. He commanded his area brilliantly and made several good saves.

Rico Lewis- 8/10: Grabbed an assist for Haaland’s opening goal and inverted into midfield when required. Played well before he was substituted.

John Stones- 8.5/10: If anyone ever forgets how good John Stones is he showed that today. He was superb at the back and offered plenty im possession. Keeping Stones fit could be crucial to Manchester City’s season.

Ruben Dias- 6.5/10: Not his best performance. At times he was sloppy in possession but defensively he was solid when required.

Rayan Ait-Nouri- 7.5/10: A composed Manchester City debut from Ait-Nouri. Defended well and was good in possession.

Nico-8.5/10: The Spanish midfielder showed exactly what he adds to this Manchester City squad. Played the Rodri role to perfection.

Bernardo Silva- 6.5/10: Cannot fault his workrate although he wasn’t at his best. His leadership did stand out while he was on the pitch.

Tijjani Reijnders- 10/10: An utterly brilliant Premier League debut from Reijnders. Scored a goal, grabbed an assist and set up City’s opening goal. Everything good in Reijnders’ game was on display at Molineux.

Oscar Bobb-9/10: Bobb was brilliant. Picked up an assist and gave the Wolves defence fits on the right wing.

Jeremy Doku- 6/10: Doku started the game well but drifted out of proceedings before being substituted. Not his best display.

Erling Haaland- 8.5/10: Scored a brace and led the line superbly for his team. An ominous start to the new season for Manchester City’s number-nine.

Substitutes

Matheus Nunes-6/10: Nunes didnt have a lot to do after coming off the bench. But there were some nice touches and tackles put in by Nunes.

Nico O’Reilly-6.5/10: O’Reilly looks set to play more in midfield this season. Like Nunes he showed a bit and some of his passing caught the eye.

Omar Marmoush-6/10: Had some heavy touches but put himself about after he came off the bench.

Rayan Cherki-8/10: A brilliant cameo display from Cherki. Scored a quality goal and his flicks and tricks were superb.

Abdukodur Khusanov- N/A: Not on long enough to mark.
