Ederson: Came out of his box a number of times to kill danger for City and came up with the assist for the second. 8

Nunes: Improved on midweek, learning more when to stay and when to charge forward - one surge brought the equaliser. 6

Khusanov: The most difficult first six minutes of a debut in memory. Did well to recover his composure and managed a few crunching tackles. 4

Akanji: Will always play because he is fit but looked short of his best again, slow to respond to Chelsea danger. 5

Gvardiol: Missed a few chances in the first half but kept going and was rewarded with his goal. He held on defensively as well. 8

Gundogan: The defensive concerns remain, although he was productive in attack with those clipped balls over the top. 7

Kovacic: Didn't learn from Paris not to give the ball away on the edge of your own box. Too many mistakes that someone of his experience should be above. 4

Silva: Dropped back to help Khusanov out after the early error and chipped in wherever was needed, even if the threat wasn't big enough pushing forward. 6

Foden: Rattled the post early and always kept Chelsea busy, then popped up with a late goal just after it looked like he had faded. 7

Marmoush: A lively debut with some threat offered instantly, but three offsides included one costly one where Silva would have scored. 6

Haaland: Good link-up play and a good goal, proving difficult for Colwill to handle all game. A lovely assist for the third 8

Substitutes

Stones (for Khusanov, 54) A quiet 40 minutes, which is all that was hoped for. 6

De Bruyne (for Marmoush, 75) Headed to Haaland for the third goal. 6

Ederson (7/10):

Couldn't do much about the first goal but made some good saves afterwards. Also grabbed an assist as a fine pass sent Haaland away for City's second.

Matheus Nunes (7/10):

A decent showing from the makeshift right-back. Made a great run forwards that set-up the equaliser.

Manuel Akanji (5/10):

A shaky performance from the centre-back. Not convincing at all and lacked the leadership needed to help guide Khusanov on his debut.

Abdukodir Khusanov (3/10):

A nightmare debut for the new signing. Gifted Chelsea the opening goal in the third minute and then went in the book shortly afterwards for a foul on Palmer. Subbed just after half-time when it looked like he was at risk of a red.

Josko Gvardiol (8/10):

A real attacking threat for City on his 50th Premier League appearance. Had narrowly missed a great chance before he equalised.

Ilkay Gundogan (7/10):

Looked much more like his old self and pinged some great balls forward which caused problems for Chelsea.

Mateo Kovacic (5/10):

Another unimpressive showing. Guilty of giving the ball away on far too many occasions.

Bernardo Silva (6/10)

Really hard-working display from the Portugal international. Seemed to be everywhere at times.

Phil Foden (7/10):

Hit the post in the first half and finished City off late on after being sent through by Haaland.

Erling Haaland (8/10):

Another game and another goal for City's main man. Had plenty to do after picking up the ball but made it look easy as he lobbed Sanchez from the edge of the box. Also claimed an assist after some strong and decisive hold-up play allowed him to put Foden through for City's third.

Omar Marmoush (7/10):

Promising showing from the new signing. Looked really bright throughout and had a goal ruled out for offside.

Subs & Manager

John Stones (7/10):

Replaced the unfortunate Khusanov early in the second half and helped firm things up at the back.

Kevin De Bruyne (7/10):

Played a part in the third goal by flicking the ball on to Haaland.

Pep Guardiola (7/10):

Wasn't afraid to throw his new signings into the fray with mixed results but saw his team's direct approach pay off. Will be pleased with the way City managed to turn it around after a disastrous start, particularly off the back of a Champions League defeat.

Ederson-7.5/10: He had little to do in goal but his play in possession was superb.

Matheus Nunes- 8/10: His best game for Manchester City. Was a threat going forward and did his job defensively.

Abdukodir Khusanov-5/10: Made a horror start to his City debut but to his credit he responded well to the early set back. He showed plenty after that and there is a lot to work with for Manchester City in Khusanov.

Manuel Akanji-6.5/10: Akanji had a poor first half but made amends for that in the second half.

Josko Gvardiol-8.5/10: His best performance for months. Scored one, could have had a hat trick, and defended well.

Mateo Kovacic-6/10: He wasn’t poor but he did struggle at times.

Ilkay Gundogan- 8.5/10: Gundogan was brilliant. He dictated the pace of the game and showed just how important he is to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Bernardo Silva-10/10: Bernardo was brilliant. He gets a 10 for his leadership after Abdukodir Khusanov struggled early and he took it upon himself to guide the young defender through a rough patch. That’s leadership and Bernardo deserves the highest praise for that and his performance over the 90 minutes.

Omar Marmoush-7.5/10: A superb debut from Marmoush. He had a goal chalked off for offside but his movement and workrate was superb. Manchester City have signed a beauty in Marmoush.

Phil Foden-8/10: Grabbed his goal and never stopped trying all game.

Erling Haaland-8.5/10: Scored one and set up Foden’s sealer with a brilliant piece of play.

Substitutes

John Stones-7.5/10: Came on for Khusanov and steadied the ship for City at the back.

Kevin De Bruyne-7/10: It was De Bruyne’s header that set up City’s third goal of the evening. Put himself about and did it well when he came on.

GK - Ederson - 6/10
Made some crucial saves to keep his side in it when they were trailing. His ball distribution with his feet was solid too. Made runs out of the box to help his team, which was risky at times.

LB - Josko Gvardiol - 8.5/10
Got forward often, and at times, looked like one of their biggest attacking threats. He even found himself in a centre-forward role at one point, but his shot went sailing past both Sanchez and the post. Was in the right place to tap the ball home for the equaliser.

CB - Manuel Akanji - 5/10
Looked strong in possession, but aside from playing out from the back, he barely had anything to do.

CB - Abdukodir Khusanov - 3/10
The 20-year-old's debut got off to a horrific start, with his error leading to Madueke's opener, before he picked up the game's first booking. Brutal outing for the Uzbekistan international. Did settle his nerves as the game progressed. Was substituted shortly after half-time.

RB - Matheus Nunes - 6/10
Was credited with the assist for Gvardiol's equalising goal in the first half. Did well in his defensive duties, making the right tackles and interceptions, which kept Sancho fairly quiet down that flank. Wasn't great in possession, though.

CM - Mateo Kovacic - 6/10
Looked to create opportunities for his teammates from deep, playing in a few key passes, and created a big chance. His long balls over the top were on the money more often than not. But he was dribbled past on a couple of occasions with Chelsea's attacking four all quite tricky.

CM - Ilkay Gundogan - 6/10
Along with Kovacic, Gundogan was winning the midfield battle between the two sides, also registering a key pass and creating a big chance. He also tried to get on the scoresheet himself, though his strike was hit on target. Mostly comfortable in possession, but wasn't immune to losing the ball.

CM - Bernardo Silva - 6/10
Did the hard yards by getting back to help his defenders out when needed, and looked calm and composed playing out of the opposition's box. Had to play deeper at times due to Chelsea pressure.

LW - Omar Marmoush - 6/10
Looked very lively from the outset. Had an opportunity to strike first, but his shot was hit straight at Sanchez, and the flag was later raised. Made some excellent runs forward into goalscoring positions.

ST - Erling Haaland - 7/10
Barely featured in the first half, completing just two of his first six passes, though one was a key pass. He was much more active in the second half, and was a game-changer with both his goal and his hold-up play.

RW - Phil Foden - 7/10
Had a chance to level the score up, but his long-range effort was fired straight at the woodwork. Along with Gvardiol, he looked the biggest threat going forward. Got the reward for his efforts by ensuring City had a comfortable two-goal cushion with just minutes remaining.

Sub - John Stones - 6.5/10
Brought in to shore up the defence, and that is exactly what he did. Very solid outing.

Sub - Kevin De Bruyne - 6/10
Looked so calm in the midfield as he usually does. Did well to get his team forward, and his presence alone instilled fear in Chelsea's defenders.

Debut disaster

Abdukodir Khusanov’s City career got off to a nightmare start. Just three minutes into his debut, the Uzbek centre-back attempted to head the ball back to Ederson but got it all wrong. Nicolas Jackson intercepted the weak back pass and squared it to Noni Madueke for a tap in that put Chelsea 1-0 up. The 20-year-old did not look up to speed and found himself booked after just four minutes, after trying to recover the ball following another under-hit pass. It was the first-ever appearance from an Uzbek in the Premier League and it began catastrophically. Khusanov did start to look more comfortable as the game went on. He made an important block to deny Jadon Sancho in the ninth minute and this seemed to help him settle. Khusanov was withdrawn just before the hour mark.

Haaland the match-winner

On his first return to the Etihad since signing a massive nine-and-a-half-year contract extension, Erling Haaland proved decisive. On a day where Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak both found the net, Haaland reminded everyone why he is the premier goalscorer in the division. He caught Robert Sanchez in no man’s land in the 68th minute and his lofty finish put City 2-1 up. In the second half, Maresca made the decision to leave his defenders one-on-one against Haaland and it cost Chelsea. In the 87th minute, the Norwegian striker held off Levi Colwill with ease and played Phil Foden clean through to secure the win for the home side.

Lively Marmoush

It was not the debut that he would have dreamt of but it was certainly better than Khusanov’s. Omar Marmoush was only announced as a City player on Thursday. After just two training sessions he was handed a starting spot today. The Egyptian looked lively throughout and was a constant threat. Although he failed to secure a goal involvement, it was a promising start to his life in Manchester. Replaced by Kevin De Bruyne in the 74th minute, Marmoush will hope to build on his debut.

Ederson – 7.5

Stayed sharp despite some lengthy periods of inactivity. Swept up when he had to and made some decent stops too.

Matheus Nunes – 7

Another action-packed outing at right-back, supporting Bernardo Silva tirelessly. Was beaten far too easily for Brugge’s goal.

John Stones – 8.5

Pep Guardiola implied in the build-up that the 30-year-old wouldn’t be re-adopting his old midfield role for this one, but clearly nobody told the Barnsley Beckenbauer! Drifted wherever he pleased on the pitch to accommodate his team’s possession play, even getting assists for Kovacic and Savinho.

Manuel Akanji – 7.5

Has been criticised recently for switching off when defending his penalty area, but aside from an unlucky touch on the cross leading to Brugge’s opener, was flawless in his concentration.

Josko Gvardiol – 8

Continued his great recent form in advanced zones. Doubled up with Phil Foden and forced the winner with his movement and class.

Mateo Kovacic – 7.5

Remained vulnerable when facing quickly-breaking opponents, but did his job on the ball with the flourish of an exceptional equalising goal.

Ilkay Gundogan – 5.5

Picked for his on-the-ball qualities to help control possession, and he did that. That approach made City totally toothless in the first half though, and his flaws were laid bare when Brugge opened the scoring by running straight through his area of the pitch. Hooked at half-time.

Kevin de Bruyne – 7.5

So often the man to make the difference on the big Champions League nights, de Bruyne was crucial in different ways tonight as he selflessly led the press and used his free role to pop up all over the attack and exchange passes.

Bernardo Silva – 6.5

Struggled to make proper inroads into the Brugge defence, but never gave up having ceded possession.

Erling Haaland – 6.5

Couldn’t make the most of his half-chances or the one big opening afforded him, but did some decent work when dropping into deeper positions.

Phil Foden – 6.5

Didn’t get any change out of Joaquin Seys. Comfortable in possession, outside of putting in some easily-claimed crosses.

Substitutes

Savinho – 8.5 (MOTM)

Seemingly lost the trust of his boss when he was withdrawn at half-time in Paris last week, but if there was any way to get back in Guardiola’s good books, Savinho did it tonight. Came on and lifted the team and the stadium with his positive play, having a hand in the winner and scoring the third himself.

Rico Lewis – N/A

Ederson: Came out of his box smartly to snuff out danger. Could he have done better with the goal? Decent saves in the second half. 6

Nunes: Two schoolboy errors in the first 45 minutes that should put paid to him at right-back. He has his qualities but they are not defensive. 4

Stones: Missed a sitter at the start of the second half, and looked understandably rusty settling into the defence. 6

Akanji: Lurking again for the goal, although he just about kept the composure at the back as City held on. 6

Gvardiol: One of City's best attackers again, and got his reward with the second goal. Some big blocks at the back too. Undroppable. 8

Kovacic: He is a big part of why City were so wide open for Club Brugge to tear through, yet he also forced and scored the equaliser. 6

Silva: His workrate keeps him in the team but he needs to offer more going forward than he did tonight. 6

De Bruyne: Radar was way off for most of the game, with some good chances missed or wasted as his decisions didn't come off. 5

Gundogan: Played higher up the pitch in a more familiar role and nearly found a few openings butt was taken off at half-time. 6

Foden: Similar to De Bruyne, nothing he tried really came off whether on the left or through the middle. 5

Haaland: Nearly earned a goal as he stormed through after dispossessing a defender and will feel like he should have had a goal. 6

Substitutes

Savinho (for Gundogan, 46) Changed the game when he came on and Brugge could not cope with him. 9

Lewis (for De Bruyne, 81) Kept things tight in the middle.

Ederson (6/10):

Not loads he could do to stop Brugge's goal and compensated for his awful displays in the competition with a confident performance. Quick out of his area to snaffle the visitors' passes in behind and equal to most of their attempts.

Matheus Nunes (4/10):

His high positioning left him vulnerable to breakaways and he was left for dead by Jutgla for the goal.

John Stones (6/10):

Played a risky game playing so high up but was good on the ball. Missed a free header at the start of the second half.

Manuel Akanji (6/10):

Got in the way of a Jutgla shot and managed to bait Brugge's press with solid ball retention.

Josko Gvardiol (8/10):

A monstrous presence at both ends of the pitch. His block on Talbi saved a goal and then he set up City's second.

Bernardo Silva (5/10):

Lacklustre in the first half, failing to trouble Brugge down the right. Improved when he moved inside in the second period.

Mateo Kovacic (7/10):

Pulled City back from the brink with his run through the middle and arrowed strike into the bottom corner, albeit aided by generous Brugge defending.

Ilkay Gundogan (4/10):

Lost the ball leading to Brugge's goal. Scored an offside goal before that but did little else and could have had few complaints when hooked at half-time for Savinho.

Kevin De Bruyne (5/10):

Made some bad decisions in possession in the first half and should have done better with a good shooting opportunity in the second.

Erling Haaland (5/10):

Fired at Simon Mignolet with a golden opportunity but was kept too quiet for a game of such magnitude.

Phil Foden (6/10):

Had some decent moments and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions

Subs & Manager

Savinho (9/10):

Completely changed the game and City have him to thank for avoiding disaster.

Rico Lewis (N/A):

Stayed calm after replacing De Bruyne in the 81st minute and saw City through.

Pep Guardiola (7/10):

Took drastic action by throwing on Savinho at half-time and it was a masterstroke.

Ederson-7.5/10: Made several crucial saves throughout the game. He is back to his best and that’s obvious to see. A good performance from Ederson.

Matheus Nunes-4/10: With Kyle Walker gone he has to play at right-back. But he must stop rushing into challenges. It cost City tonight and it’s something that he has to rectify.

John Stones-8.5/10: Manchester City’s best player over the 90 minutes for me. Defended well and grabbed an assist. If he stays fit he could be crucial for the remainder of the season for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manuel Akanji-6/10: Not his best display. He was better in the second half than he was in the first.

Josko Gvardiol-8/10: Another quality performance from Gvardiol. He was immense going forward, and it was his cross that led to City taking the lead. Also defended well.

Mateo Kovacic-8/10: He scored City’s equaliser and his drive from midfield helped City immensely in the second half. However, Manchester City must sign another midfielder to allow Kovacic to play in a role that he is more suited to.

Ilkay Gundogan-5/10: Had a goal disallowed for offside but offered nothing much else before he was substituted.

Kevin De Bruyne-6.5/10: His first half performance mirrored his team’s, which was poor. He was alot better in the second half before being substituted.

Bernardo Silva-6/10: He was poor in the first half on the right wing. He was alot better in the second half playing in a role he is better suited to.

Phil Foden-6.5/10: Playing Foden on the left wing is a waste of his talents. He was much better when moved to his preferred position in the second half.

Erling Haaland-6/10: Only had one chance of note but his pressing was much better.

Substitutes

Savinho-8/10: Turned the game when he came on at halftime. Scored a goal and made Manchester City infinitely more dangerous going forward. A superb performance.

Rico Lewis-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.
