Meanwhile, Mark Ogden of the Telegraph states there are no plans to sign David Villa ahead of his move to New York City FC, insisting: "The former Valencia and Barcelona striker has since made four appearances on loan at Melbourne City - Abu Dhabi's A-League outfit - in order to maintain his fitness ahead of the MLS season, which kicks off in March.

"But although City have benefited hugely from Frank Lampard's presence at the club following his temporary move from New York, which may yet be extended until the end of the season, there are no plans to sign Villa on a similar basis."

less likely David Villa will come

"Five strikers City could target in January" which includes Wilfried Bony, Saido Berahino, Mauro Icardi, Alexandre Lacazette and Edinson Cavani.

They can still catch Chelsea but it might take some work in the transfer window.

Here's five men that could transform their line up in January.

Mario Mandzukic

The Atletico man was today linked with a move to Manchester City.

The Croatia star signed for Atletico in the summer to replace Diego Costa, however with Fernando Torres being considered for a return to Madrid City could cash in.

Wilfried Bony

The Ivory Coast star is the top scorer for the calendar year.

The down side is the African Cup of Nations.

Bony is similar physique to Sergio Aguero but a bit less explosive.

Would be a great purchase but the fact he's missing through January means it's unlikely.

Edinson Cavani

The Uruguay star is itching to leave PSG with issues over his position.

The French club paid around £50m for him so it wouldn't exactly be a cheap option but one that could work.

Karim Benzema

The France star is rumoured to be nearing the exit door at the Bernabeu.

And Benzema would be a top class option for Manuel Pellegrini.

David Villa

If they can get Frank Lampard why not go even further and get David Villa as well.

Would be a stop gap, but a good one.

Villa plays for NYCFC, owned by Man City, so, you know...
