Professor Gordon Mackay: 'I can save Theo Walcott's season'

Theo Walcott of Arsenal makes a 2-0 gesture to the Tottenham fans as he is stretchered off the pitch during the Budweiser FA Cup third round match between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur at Emirates Stadium on January 4, 2014© Getty Images

A surgeon has reportedly claimed that he can rescue Theo Walcott's hopes of playing in this summer's World Cup.

The Arsenal forward's season was thought to be over after he was ruled out for six months with a knee injury sustained in the Gunners' 2-0 win against
Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup on Saturday evening.

However professor Gordon Mackay reckons that he can have the England international up and running within four months by using a pioneering procedure, according to the Daily Mail.

He is quoted as saying: "Arsenal will have their plans in place for Theo Walcott's recovery and these are always sensitive issues. But we would like to inform the club of this different approach."

Professor Mackay will contact the Premier League leaders this week and inform them of his plans.

Jack Wilshere scored his third goal of the season as Arsenal were 2-1 winners against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The 22-year-old made the breakthrough in the 34th minute before Olivier Giroud doubled the north London side’s lead moments later, whilst Christian Benteke netted a 77th-minute strike to ensure a nervy finish.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to Monday night’s action.

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour ‏(@RealRomfordPele) gives his thoughts on the opening half hour: “Lots of possession. Villa defending very deep! #afc #avfc…”

Before celebrating two great moments of individual skill: “Great goal from Wilshire 1-0 to the Gooners. Get in. Ha 2 0 Giroud. Fantastic finish. We are top of the league.”

Injured Gunners midfielder Aaron Ramsey (@aaronramsey) celebrates the two quick-fire goals: “Great goals by Jack and Giroud, get in there!!!!”

Tottenham legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) is a huge Wilshere fan: “He’s a delightful footballer is @JackWilshere. Sublime finish followed by a terrific pass for Giroud.”

Striker Dexter Blackstock ‏(@dexblackstock23) feels Arsenal’s French striker deserves more respect: “Giroud don’t get the respect he deserves!!!”

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier ‏(@mattletiss7) may have missed his calling; management: “Great decision to have Giroud and Wilshere in my fantasy team this week #goalsgalore

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (‏@piersmorgan) isn’t satisfied with Arsène Wenger’s options up front: “I’ll say it again, we need another world class striker…but I can never fault @_OlivierGiroud_ ‘s work-rate and desire. Great heart.”

Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) is amused by Wenger’s half-time struggles with his coat: “Never mind a new contract, if Arsenal do go on to win the league the club should reward Wenger with a new coat.”

Republic of Ireland defender Sean St Ledger ‏(@seanstledger12) praises Arsenal’s unsung hero Mathieu Flamini: “Flamini has been brilliant tonight. Broke so many attacks up, filled in for other players at the right time.”

Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara ‏(@chris_kammy) is enjoying the games as a neutral: “Benteke with a stooping header to give us a grandstand finish.”

Everton legend Peter Reid ‏(@reid6peter) would appear to have had his money on both teams to score: “Benteke great header, cash done.”

Andros Townsend’s father Troy Townsend ‏(@Towno10) can’t believe the Villa striker’s miss moments later: “Oh, Benteke that’s the equaliser right there.”

Arsenal legend Ian Wright (@IanWright0) is a happy chappy: “Great win, had to win, and did. COYG.”

Gunners forward Lukas Podolski (‏@Podolski10) is happy to be back on top of the league: “Back on the top again #afc #backonthetop #COYG #poldi #aha”

Arsenal forward Alex Ox-Chamberlain ‏(@Alex_OxChambo) is thrilled to return from injury: “Nice to get back on the pitch tonight, especially with a good 3 points. Had to dig deep second half, but we managed to see the game out #AFC”

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Özil (@MesutÖzil1088) is happy for the win – as well as for his former Real Madrid colleague and Ballon d’Or 2013 winner: “2:1 – an important win for us and in Monaco a triumph for my friend cristiano. Congrats. #cristiano #ronaldo”

Finally, Per Mertesacker celebrates three points on his 100th Gunners appearance on Facebook: “100th Arsenal game tonight for me … Tough second half, but happy about the 3 points for the jubilee.”

on Rosicky and Monreal…

Rosicky has a bad nose, I don’t know is it broken or not, it looks bad.

on being disappointed with the elbow…

Honestly I didn’t see the elbow, I have to watch it again. He [Tomas Rosicky] told me that he got the elbow but he himself doesn’t know if he did it on purpose. He doesn’t know. I think Monreal is an accident but we have to check his metatarsal tomorrow morning because he got kicked on the top of the laces.

on whether Monreal’s metatarsal might be broken…

I don’t know.
win but another players in injuries list..hope they don't take a long absence..
