I kept sea-monkeys 20 years ago. Mom bought me the whole set inculding the tank with a magnifying glass. Its was just a short term thing as aster the food ran out, so did my interest.

I do see some places having them now in fancy enclosures and the lil critters swimming around....

Yup, they're called brine shrimp. Their eggs can survive harsh climates in the wild even when the dry season is at it's peak.

so sea monkeys are actually brine shrimp blink.gif

do they really sell brine shrimp in pet shops here in malaysia? Ive been to alot of pet shops and i dont think i came across any. On the other hand, maybe I just did'nt noticed them since i dont know how are they sold.

Do they sell the eggs, or do they sell it as adults? I think i once noticed a pet shop selling processed brine shrimp. Im very interested since people say they are very good food for fish.

Hm... I did see before at fish shops, but I cant remember which ones... they usually sell the shrimps. Usually I see they have a bag of eggs, then they pump air into it so it keeps bubbling... then you can buy the shrimps that they have hatched out.

i got a white one still surviving ... prolly used up around RM5 worth of goldfish on my pond to get rid of mozzy spawn ... dump RM1 into the pond on a monthly basis. the cat eats those who survive the first day.

i kept sea monkeys before ... apparently u can teach them tricks by using the light. nvr got around to doing it.

I am kind of sick n upset when you guys fooling by those shop or seller about this sea monkey. It is not sea monkey. It is brine shrimp. They surviving in salt water.

Goto fish shop and ask for Artemia eggs will do. 1 small bottle is around rm18-22. But hatching rate is low. Life brine shimp...mostly lfs with those marine stuff selling it.

I just bought one small packet of artemia eggs (Sera brand) for RM5.30 at Pet Family Taman Megah. On the packet says already included salt and high hatch rate, so just add water. This is yet to be proven though since i just poured the contents last night.

Ya,but not all eggs hatched, what ur hatched rate on ur packet of eggs?

U may see the eggs were floating, but most of them were eggs shell of hatched artemia! biggrin.gif

Its really hard to raised them until they big,u maybe got only less than 1% to raise them until big! laugh.gif

Mine only 40-50 from hundred of thousand of artemia live until now, sad.gif

haha of course i did not exactly count biggrin.gif . I count roughly ten at one area, than i estimated there are at least 10 more areas with 10 artemia. so i multiplied 10 with 10 so got 100.. err paham ke tak? rclxub.gif

The packet says (artemia + salt). Just need to add water. I poured some aquarium water into a bowl (500 ml - 1L). Then i poured the contents. I took a spoon and stirred the contents. It took 1 1/2 day before i saw results.

It's been 5 days now, and i dont think any more artemia will hatch.
Anyone know how to clean the unhatched eggs and the egg "shells" from hatched artemia?Without accidently disposing the hatched artemia?? Sakit mata when I want to find the artemias since they are still very small and same size as the eggs. rclxub.gif

Came back home yesterday and wanted to do another "head count" of my artemia.
I found out that my previous calculation was wrong. I did not have approx. 100 hatched artemia. In fact I have HUNDREDS of hatched artemia rclxms.gif . 300 would not be an exaggeration icon_idea.gif

not sure if its from NYOS or not.
By the way, this is how the sachet looks like
user posted image

Some info:
Sera Artemia mix
Contents must be put into a clean ventilated container with 500 ml (just under a pint).water at approx 24-26 C, and about 24 hours you have live artemia.People who have no experience in hatching their own food, will find this the simple and cost effective answer. The Artemia eggs are from the Great Salt Lake in Utah/USA and are particularly high quality. Sera Artemia mix comes in practical portions bags.
Nothing else is required

RM30 is the cheapest one in Toys R Us. They have bigger tank that cost around RM100 like u said! RM30 provided with tank also. A small one. If you all think it's cheap then you can find it at Toy's R Us outlet! The one i saw was in Subang Parade!

Go check out!

As for me since me and my friend are first timers we prefer to buy cheaper first lor... suddenly all die wasted RM30! tongue.gif

I read somewhere online article mentioning that sea monkeys eat algae... not sure how true is that... If they do then it's no problem since algae is so easy to get! icon_rolleyes.gif

i've got sea monkeys egg for sale... well, you can get it everywhere...

a pack, not more than rm 8... by this brand call sera...
it comes with salt... so just have a bottle of plain water and make sure you got the air bubble thing going on....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

beside sea monkey, i also have this thing call fairy shrimp...
just need to hatch using plain water... no need use salt...
and no need for the air bubble thing....
fairy shrimp has got a red color tail...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

concerning about seamonkeys eating algae, yes... but its " green water... "
its those floating algae which makes your water goes green in color...

never tried mashed fish food but they thrive on yeast. I used to cultivate myself, the yeast.

I remember I read that They eat some sort of bacteria, in which like u add rotting fruit or vegetabe to water with algae and it will foster certain bactera stuff it eats. Don't remember the details.

Any my brine shrimp only live for a couple of days at most cuz their ultimate purpose is fish fry food. sweat.gif My fry used to eat about a hundred a day or more.

sweat.gif Eh... If you're asking about selling in their egg form, they can stay unhatched in their eggs for up to 10 years until comditions are optimal for them to hatch out. It's once of those great stuff to sell in pet shop cuz its expiry date is SO long.

I have no experience of raising one for more than a week. Cuz it's meant to be my baby fish fry food. whistling.gif But they can grow up to 2 inches so their lifespan has got to be longer than a week lar.

smile.gif I used instant raising yeast or something of the like. It's for baking. I remember it's less than RM 2 a packet and I never used finished. The websites I read taught people on how to raise their own yeast so I did that. smile.gif It's actually pretty good because when you put cultivated yeast in the water, the water gets cloudy (the cultivated yeast is whitish in color). But the water starts to clear because the shrimp eats the yeast. So you can judge when to feed the shrimp according to how clear the water became.

Yup, Toys R Us in One Utama has them and so do Jusco and Parkson in the 1 Utama shopping mall (haven't seen them in any other Jusco and Parkson outlets elsewhere although all Toys R Us outlets should carry Sea-monkeys). Parkson currently has a 10% sale so you might want to head there to buy.

Speaking of Sea-monkeys, they are actually a species of Branchiopods ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branchiopoda ) and a sub-species of Fairy Shrimp ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anostraca ), commonly known as Brine Shrimp ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brine_shrimp ). However, "Sea-Monkeys®" is actually a trademark name owned by Transcience Corp.

As quoted from http://seamonkey.com/html/aboutsm/whatarethey.html
"Sea-Monkeys® are a unique species of brine shrimp, known by the scientific name of Artemia NYOS. We not only unlocked the most elusive secrets of their life cycle, we created new formulas to keep them alive under conditions found in the average home—an accomplishment never before achieved! Finally, after years of crossbreeding, we developed a hybrid. These amazing new hybrids grow larger and live longer than any "natural" variety of brine shrimp. Resulting from the most exquisitely sophisticated “aquaculture technology”, by true pioneers in this science, only the utmost resources of a leading marine biological research center working for a span of many years has made this project a complete success."

I actually bought Sera's Artermia Salina (scientific name for Brine Shrimp) meant as fish food (RM5.90 each pack at most pet shops) and put them side-by-side with my Sea-Monkeys (RM39.90 for the cheapest pack). The Sea-Monkeys really grew much faster, lived longer and are generally larger than the brine shrimp. These are the newer hybrids that change color (just a little more as compared to brine shrimp) and live up to 2 years. I don't think they are the same as the older Sea-Monkeys that I brought during my childhood days that I never managed to keep alive passed the month.

I hope that clears up the confusion for people wanting to know what Sea-Monkeys are and whether they more worth it to buy than brine shrimp, which are so much cheaper. If you need more information for your science project, you can also check out the University of Berkeley's website: http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/cr...anchiopoda.html

I buy mine from an online store in Malaysia, they got the complete range. Fast respond and fast delivery too. But, need to pay extra RM15 for the postage for West Malaysia and RM25 for East Malaysia. So, I gather a few of my friend to buy togather. I order 3 unit, and the postage was still RM15. So, end up the shipping cost is only RM5 each.

It's expensive because it's new and not really all that popular I guess? I use it as fry food. tongue.gif

I can only keep it about a week and quite a few die dayly. Guess nothing beats their home in lake utah.

Erm, Sea Monkeys is the same as brine shrimps in't? To me, it is.

Brine shrimps eggs can be found at pet shops (ask for artemia eggs / brine shrimp eggs / (say the one to feed fish fries)). Sold in packets or bottles.

Comparison between Full Set Monkey and Artemia (those sold in fish shops):-

I .Sea monkey full set - 30 ringgit
What you get = A fancy small container with magnifiying glass + a small packet of artemia eggs + a spoon? + some accessories? + food?

II. Artemia Eggs from Fish Shop + Equimpments you may consider to get
What you should get :-
1. A bottle of eggs (RM18 - easily more than 10 times from Sea Monkey Co)
2. An air pump + air tube (length varies) + air filter x2(not sure what is this called) (RM 1x - Increase hatching rate)
3. A container (RM 2x - If planning to keep as pets, why not get something bigger? Like 2 ft glass aquarium?)
4. Sea salt (RM 2x - Not common aquarium salt. Sea Salt for Marine Fishes)
5. Anti Chlorine (RM 1)

Depending on environment, they don't generally live very long, (Maybe lack of food and oxygen). Most are good for 3 to 5 days as food for fish fries.

To increase hatching rates from eggs some breeders use washing technique to remove the hard egg layers (but this is too detail and I've never tried it myself - for more information, google it). What you can easily do is:-
1. Get a clear mineral bottle. Cut it into half horizontally. The cut should be roughly 3/4 from the opening.
2. Remove the cap. Make a hole thru the cap to fit the air tube.
3. Get about 2 ft of air tube, stick it thru the hole in the cap enough to put a small air filter inside/inwards the cap. Seal it with water proof glue or something.
4. When dried, screw the cap back into the 3/4 bottle top.
5. Filled it with 1/2 water + anti chlorine + sea salt (Calculate the right amount for the water)
6. Let it stand on the remainding 1/4 bottle bottom and aerate it for a few hours.
7. Add in artemia eggs and leave it for 1 to 2 days.
8. When most eggs hatches, remove them from the bottle and into a bigger tank with aeration.

As for food, I'm not sure.

These Sea Monkeys are quite small, a hatching are just like fine jumping dust particles inside the water. 2 - 3 days old you may see them swimming or jumping inside the water like 5mm tadpoles.

Hope this helps

Erm, you can try, there is this dried brine shrimps sold at fish shops. I think they have it at pet safari.

My sis actually tasted it, she said salty. I mean it does smell good. But none of my fish likes it.

Packaging, advertising, custom-made products. But just 5 days perhaps cause of lack of food, lack of oxygen and lack of good quality water

Where did you get the eggs from? The eggs must be kept dry. Any possible moisture will damage the eggs, renders them useless.
Possible that the shop that sold you did not kept them properly or old stock. Cause as long as you put the eggs inside any water, they'll likely hatch. But surviving inside there is another part of the story.

Erm, I assume you got the one called Sea Monkey right?

The water which you used, does it have sufficient oxygen? You should aerated water to increase hatching rates (Try stirring). Did you use salt water? (Sea salt, NOT aquarium salt)

But the hatching rate for Sea Monkeys is relatively low. Usually I use one tea spoon for hatchery, after 2 days I transfer them into a bigger container. Usually get 100's of them. (I can say 60% - 70% of mine died after the second day)

I'll just say is hard to keep them alive. Don't follow the instructions given in the tablet which comes with your product. Try googling for more information. (Breeding artemia)

Breeding as food or pet is almost the same in early stages. Is only at later stage, trying to keep them alive is difficult. I've never come close to growing them up to the size of more than 4 ~ 5mm.

Cause I was told it can grow up to 1 inch big. Maybe some other experts in this field can clarify this.

Good luck for those who is trying to keep them. = )

The fish shop at 4.5 miles got sell the eggs, but it's brime shrimp. I grow it in big thanks in big tanks outside my house for 6 months now. It grow itself and reproduce itself. I stop adding salt 4 months ago. I guess the water is turning from salt water to fresh water already. But the brime shrimp is still doing great. I never feed it. Let the sun make the algae for them to eat.

need to wait one day to see babies biggrin.gif but if the water condition not suitable, it will take longer.

I read must be room temperature, cannot too cold, too dark too bright, too hot @_@!!!

I think bare bottom will be fine. I'm worried the lil sea monkey babies might get stuck beneath the gravel.

not sure about the 1L, but the packet of conditioner that's already in ur starter kit tank last a long time. I read from online, it last until 10 years still okay! it stays on the bottom and all you need to do is fill up water each time the water level goes down. When you want your babies to be stronger (the sea monkey babies after hatching) u add a bit more water conditioning to separate water n fill it in the tank. Don't overdosed them. Tiny bit only water conditioning. U can see now from the 1 package that comes with your tank, u can agak just to fill 1inch water needs how much from your second packet of powder.

the 2nd packat of water conditioning is for future use...because i plan to gift my friend.and the tank i bought from ikano not even 1L and the water conditioning is much bigger than the extra packet i bought(list down 1L)

yes biggrin.gif u dont worry coz i bought the bigger tank too but it cost rm45 and the packet is larger than the one u buy extra. Extra is to backup only for next time when the water is being refill too much. The water conditioner also contain salt the seller told me, sea monkey babies need salt to grow.

so.. these "monkeys" they only feed on "monkey food"? i got couple marimos and would like to add in some "monkeys" into it.. next.. do they depend on co2 or o2 to live on, as marimos they produce o2 and sucks up co2 i think, and if "monkey" depend on co2, will they be dead by then?

will the formula kill my marimo too?
