Finally, Happy New Year 2014.
I had done my 1Km wifi setup and the outcome very impressive.

the mission is to link my house unifi to my mother-in-law house:

[unifi]-->[unifi router]<--->[NSM5]<- - - 1km - - ->[NSM5]<-->[router]<--wifi-->[devices]

Location: KL/Selangor

Check list:
1) ubquiti nanostation M5 X 2 units (RM350 each from advancedatan.com)
2) CAT-6 23AWG LAN cable X 2 (RM30-70 find in lowyat)
3) WIFI router (i use cheap Tenda router) to share the internet
4) Optional* cheap water pipe to shield the cable (70cent/ft)
5) Optional* steel pipe about 5ft (RM 12)
6) Optional* cement and sand (RM 5)

item #4 #5 #6 are for outdoor setup

NOTE* please use good quality CAT6 cable, 23AWG, not 24AWG for long range because the PoE (power over ethernet) will lost due to cheap and thin cable and causing the NSM5 up/down all the time. my first failure is using cheap 40m CAT5.

Actually it is quite simple....

1) Configure your NSM5, please follow this tutorial, it will save your time alot!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx8FWBjhkrc

Note 1* After watching the youtube, please go to Advance tab and set your distance from 0.6 miles default to something else greater, I set 27Km for my house NSM5 and 10Km for mother-in-law house NSM5 else you got not enough throughput to link both distance.
Note 2* Please set your wifi access password as the tutorial ask you not to set, I'm using WPA2.
Note 3* I am using 5Ghz, not 2.4Ghz wifi for less interference.

2) mount the first NSM5, make sure it is line of sight.

3) build your base to mount the second NSM5, just mix some concrete and sand into those "CNY" plastic container and stick you steel pipe inside, wait for two days. smile.gif

4) make sure everything is setup properly and bring your NSM5 to your destination for setup.

Note1* Make sure the LAN cable is gently pass through the pipe
Note2* Use some aluminium foil to wrap the exposed LAN cable

5) adjust your NSM5 to get best signal, I just agak agak only...

6) setup your 2nd wifi router and share the internet out, you are done.

The result is superb!!!

The links speed is from 240Mbps to 300Mbps from airOS, RSSI is -64dbi for 1Km, which is better than my router signal from living room (unifi router) to my house toilet.

when I benchmark unifi speed from my mother-in-law house, I get full speed. wow smile.gif

----------update 2-------------

The legality of this setup in malaysia.
Just check with skmm spec and it is legal as my frequency is 5.7Ghz and ubiquiti NSM5 having max throughput of 600mA which is less than 1 watt under 5Ghz category.

http://www.skmm.gov.my/skmmgovmy/files/att...nts/WTS_SRD.pdf
The maximum EIRP for Class Assignment Wireless LAN type devices;
Item Frequency Bands Max EIRP (Watts) Max EIRP (dBm)
1. 2400 MHz to 2500 MHz 500 milliWatts 27 dBm
2. 5250 MHz to 5350 MHz 1 Watt 30 dBm
3. 5725 MHz to 5875 MHz 1 Watt 30 dBm

----------update 3-------------

Here is the picture showing medium (heavy?) rain and I can achieve -64dbi with 270Mbps-300Mbps speed. wifi quality remains same during rain.

----------update 4-------------
Didn't found any issue (03-Mar-2014), noticed something, during heavy download, the speed will drop to 180Mbps and rise up again if download stop.

----------update 5-------------
Almost 2 years, this setup didn't create any issue, network is smooth and consistent.

Thanks for the info!

Just a quick question as I wonder, why you choose this over the TP-Link one?

Ubiquiti gear is cheap and cheerful smile.gif We have a couple of Unifis in our office, and I know someone who successfully made a PtP with the Nanostations.

Do you experience any connection problem during heavy rain?

actually the powerful airOS tools and it's spectrum analyzer that impress me.
Spectrum analyzer like wi-spy (http://www.metageek.net/products/wi-spy/) is expensive and about USD99.

So far so good and stable, I haven't have chance to test for raining conditions...

Might add the APC surge protector in between the PoE adapter and NSM5.

i thinks 10km is no problem for line of sight distance, the NSM5 said to be 15km and internal firmware Air OS can adjust up to 27km....

my 1km most of time can get full speed 300mbps (my house unifi only 5Mbps)

Do you measure the height for both location when doing the point to point adjustment? This is the most difficult part.

And very impress with your DIY mounting kits at your parent-in-law house rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

you need to consider good lightning solution for your outdoor installation. for example lightning arrestor and grounding also. else your investment short live and turn ashes.

not sure my terrain here, mine is about 4floor higher then hers but i didnt pointing my NSM5 down because it has about 15 degree (elevation), should be good enough.

I have two pairs of 300m PtP using the Nanostation M5, and it works like a charm. CCTV full speed and internet no problem too (on the same link). Recently Kuantan heavy rain & thunderstorm also didn't stop it from working!

Best networking buy so far!

Yeap, my raining test also brings very positive results, no speed drop smile.gif

I will test this this week, just bring one of the NSM5 into my house but the directions remains same.
hopefully it can penetrate 2 house's (about 5 bricks walls in total)

Just tested, both nsm5 set to maximum output of 27Km.
If I bring the NSM5 into my living room...

[nsm5]--->[living room wall]---->[bed room wall]---->[neighbour living+bed room]----700m---->[nsm5]

my link speed drop from 300Mbps to 6.5Mbps (max 30Mbps), signal -86dbi from AirOS.
technically still faster than my 5Mbps Unifi, going to do real speed bench on this.

another test with nsm5 at balcony blocked by 1 layer of wall, result is good, can get >100Mbps
