Hi all, I'm a fresh grad and just started working for my first month. Now work as a programmer and mainly focus on DB stuffs in my company. But the problem for me is I not really like to deal with data, instead I prefer to deal with multimedia stuffs. So want to ask some opinion from you all here should I continue work there and learn more about DB related stuffs in my company or find other jobs that I'm more interested in?
By the way, I'm on a 6 months contract with my current company. All opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance |

Just stay to learn more... It's better for you in the future, you may not like it now, but you will sure use the experience in the future...

Hi, thanks for your reply. But if I were to apply for other job in the future that has nothing to do with DB, will they still count me as having experience in non-db related programming stuffs?Just my 2 cents... Thanks. |

I don't think so... As nowadays companies requires people which can do all kind of task which they called multitasking... So, if you got more knowledge, you will be their choice. They might not need you to do the db stuff in your next company but they will certainly take that as a pro when they compare you with others...

Oh ya, if my current company were to extend the contract duration after my 6 months contract, should I accept it or I should find other job that I prefer more when my contract duration are about to due? |

You're on contract. Upon employment, I'm sure you had to sign some death warrant. Please read it through and pay attention to the section on "Termination of Contract / Employment". I'm sure it states something regarding breaching the contract before it expires, which would require some form of compensation.
If you're not happy with the job, no point staying on. Life expectancy is at low 70 years of age. You've used up almost 1/3. Why waste time dwelling in something you aren't contended with? Work may take up your time, but there are other avenues to search for employment. For a start, I think this forum does have job opportunities. You can even try stuff like jobstreet or jobsdb. Don't worry about finding time for interviews. Simply cook up some excuse that you need to take emergency leave to settle personal matters. No one has the right to deny you that. In the meantime, while waiting for your death row, pick up some stuff and learn. I don't know any modern world systems that do not require DB knowledge. Even if it is multimedia based... |

I've read through the contract a lot of times and I couldn't find anything related to contract breaching. Anyway, I've sent you part of my contract in PM. Maybe you can give me some advice on it? Well I have to agree with you on this. Life is short and we should do things we like while we're still alive Anyway in the mean time I'll find some other more suitable job and only consider should I change job when I got a job offer. Erm as for making up excuses for taking leave, I think its a little bit difficult for me as I'm a kind of person that "when I did something wrong, you can see it through my face". Ya i know that almost all systems in this world need DB now, but for me some minor DB stuffs wont hurt anyway, just that I prefer to get involve more in multimedia related programming as it is more "interesting" for me. Cheers |
