Lightroom is the essential,beside photo editing it's a great archive tool as well.
If beginner do try out photoshop elements which is a lot more cheaper although you lose some advance features from photoshop but not necessary hampering your editing experience.
If you have not exposed to photoshop,gimp is worth a try.The interface and ease of use is not as robust as photoshop.
