INTRODUCTION
After Plantronics Gamecom 777, comes Gamecom 780, the major difference is the Dolby Technologies they used on these headsets. Gamecom 777 only uses Dolby® Headphone, while Gamecom 780 uses Dolby® Headphone and Dolby Pro Logic® IIx for more immersive surround sound gaming and movies experience. These are some features for Plantronics Gamecom 780
- Dolby® Headphone and Pro Logic® IIx technologies transform standard audio into a stunning 7.1 surround sound experience
- 40mm speakers pound out deep bass and immersive stereo sound
- Built-in spin-joints let the earpods lay flat for easy storage when you need to take a break
- Noise-canceling mic kills background noise so your team or opponents can clearly hear your commands
- Easy-to-reach on-ear volume and mute buttons let you adjust the sound and still keep a hand on the controls
- Superhero-strength cords and joints mean this USB headset will be around for all your battles

COMPARISON WITH GAMECOM 777
As mention somewhere, Plantronics Gamecom 780 uses 2 Dolby Technologies. But, that's not the only difference from Gamecom 777. Gamecom 780 uses on ear volume control and mic mute instead of inline control, which is easier to locate when you are in gaming session. You can also turn on the Dolby Surround Sound by just clicking the button on the left earpod. The design also was less bulky than the previous one, but they still use a very strong and durable material so that the headset will last longer. After downloaded the software, you have the option to chose Gaming Mode or Music/Movies Mode. But, I can't really find out the difference between these 2 modes.
TESTING AND RESULTS
Games :
For games, I tested it with Dota 2, Counter Strike : Global Offensive, Call of Duty : Ghosts and L4D2. With Dolby enabled, it does gives you more immersive and detailed gaming experience. The 7.1 Surround Sound works well for most games, but, I can't really pinpoint the location of enemies when playing FPS games. Anyway, I have to say that this headset does provide superb sound quality in terms of gaming. You can really hear the reload sound, gunshot, explosions, back-stabbed by enemies, and chopper coming from above very realistic like you were in the battlefield. Unfortunately, I can't really determine the location of gunfire other than from front, right and left.
Musics :
The sound quality while listening to musics was very satisfying, whether in stereo mode or with Dolby enabled. The bass was skull-rocking, and not muddy at all. You would enjoy hearing Pop, Techno, Rock, Metal, Indie, and some Country musics, I would say, with this headset. For other genres, it does sounds great, but not in the level of pure satisfaction. Personally, I prefer hearing musics in Dolby Mode. It gives you more detailed sound experience than Stereo mode, and somehow make it like the sound was coming from your speakers, which is a great experience for those who like to hear musics from speakers, but wish it to be more immersing feeling.
Comfort :
First of all, I'm more of a fan of closed back headset. But, I have no complaints with these headset in terms of comfort. It was really comfortable to use for a long period of time. I'm not sure whether the ear cushions were amde of cloth or velvet or microfiber, but it can keeps me comfortable for around 4-5 hours of gaming. Longer than that, my ears would start to hurt, since the earpod rest on the top and bottom of your ear. The same material was used for the headband, which is really nice to keep your head cool. This headset was also lightweight, you won't really feel the headset on top of your head.
Mic Test :
The mic quality was very impressive, it sounds very clear and has very little distortion. It is good to use for Skype or in gaming sessions
CONCLUSION
Overall, Plantronics Gamecom 780 was a really great pair of gaming headset, can be considered as an upgrade of Gamecom 777. The sound quality was amazing, in games or movies, it does gives you a better sound experience than some regular headset. The soft ear cushions was enough to keep me cool and comfy for my gaming sessions. I would recommend this headset to anyone who's looking for a great PC gaming headset. This headset is a USB Powered with it's own sound card, which means you can't use this with your high-end sound card (if you have one). Lastly, I won't recommend this to big headed gamers, since it won't fit into your head. Plantronics Gamecom 780 can be found on most retailers for around RM269-279.
PROS :
- Superb sound quality
- Very comfortable to wear for a very long time
- Easy to reach on ear audio control
- Mic quality was good
CONS :
- The mic can only rotate around 90 degrees, and it is not adjustable
- The headband can't adjust for big headed gamers, can only be worn for small and medium head size
