Hi All,
Id been around here lurking a long time already. Usually quiet unless i hv something to say. I luv fishing and had been doing it a long time already. But currently in hiatus fro the past 2 yrs due to family commitments and work.
I just want to share w you guys my story abt the 1st time i went offshore fishing in a boat.
I was then in my 1st job and made friend w a colleague who was abt the same age as me. He shared lots of stories and tales abt his fishing exploits. I still remember one of his tale till today....wl tell you shortly.
Anyway asked him to organise a boat trip which he did and we went w 4 of my friends ( all no experience in ocean fishing, we all fish fm sea shore only ) and him. Let's just call him the experienced guy. He gave us lots of tips on what to buy or use during the trip.
Boat ride took abt 1.5 hrs, i estimate maybe abt 18 nautical miles. Not far fm Pulau Kendi Penang. When tekong anchored the boat, he look at us and smiled before going to rest. All of us was so excited, I was using an Abu 3000 BC reel + a newly bought shimano 5" rod ( cant remember the model dee ) and we quickly rigged our baits and drop it into the sea.
About 5 mins later, one of my friend said....wah water so deep...bait why so long cant reach the ocean floor. I echoed his sentiments cos my line was still running out and cant seem to stop. The experienced guy just replied, dont worry just keep on letting the line go and it will reach the ocean floor. Another 5 mins but my line just kept going so I just decided to stop the line and wait. No surprises when there was no bite at all among all of us.
abt an hour later, 3 of my friends was vomiting because of seasickness. So we asked the tekong to move us near Pulau Kendi. At Pulau Kendi, we had loads of fun cos the water was only 10" deep and it was a haven for baby groupers...tons of different grouper species.
Suddenly I had a huge take....I shouted to my friends...big one big one.....I was pumping the rod up and down and up and down....my friends were all watching me ...then the line snapped and my rod broke into 2. The tekong who was also watching due to the commotion was smiling at me AGAIN. I had to sit and watched my friends fish for the rest of the trip.
Looking back, I realise the tekong was not smiling at us...he was more like grinning and chuckling cos our weights were too light to fish according to the water current that day. And he was not smiling at me when I broke my rod either. After gaining more experience, I know now how to differentiate between a snag and a bite for boat fishing. Painful lessons.
My 2nd offshore fishing trip was abt 1.5 yrs later when I joined another company and met another colleague who organised a trip to Tukun Perak.
As for the fishing tale the experienced guy told me...well I copied his tale and made it my own and told my new colleague and his friends during the 2nd trip.
It goes like this, once I was fishing in Yan, Kedah and I caught the biggest tenggiri i had ever seen....it took me abt 30 mins to land the tenggiri but the most shiok and frightening this was that the tenggiri was pulling the boat round and round till i landed it. My audience just ask me how big was the fish and i opened both my arms wide. and they smiled at me without a single word.
Well i know they weren't smiling at me back then but chuckling and grinning.
I had painful lessons while learning how to fish. But once I learnt how to be humble and also apple polishing and I managed to learn quite a lot from my fishing friends who turned into fishing buddies now.
Tukun Perak.....back then was wow...sailfish everywhere, most of the trevally species....if u lucky can spot whale shark + giant manta rays.
