In hindsight, we probably should have thrown away one of the two games we played last week. I know this won't go down easily with most people as the idea of throwing a game is inconceivable. BR was brave to go full throttle against City and Chelsea but i wonder if we would benefit from fielding a slightly weaker side against City (who was always favorite to win at their homeground) and then play our best 11 against Chelsea.

Funnily, I thought of the same thing. But we are Liverpool, we never throw games away.

Like you said, perhaps a tactical rotation would yield a different outcome, but BR already said he's down to 17 fit players only. I surmise that BR was playing a gamble here by putting out his best against City, hoping to nick at least a point there so that he will have less pressure to deliver against Chelsea.

Which brings us to the question of our squad depth. Cherroy, Rotuham and a few other members have stressed that investment of quality players is needed badly come January if we wish to realize our Champions League dream. Often times, their points are being brushed aside and ridiculed, with some claims saying that they want to emulate City and Chelsea, forcing our beloved FSG to spend big in the market which is very unintelligent of these critics.

For the first time in 4 years, I have a sense of optimism where we ACTUALLY have a real chance of getting back into Champions League this season, and we want to stay in the hunt until the end of the season. We got a good run in the team, with Sturridge and Suarez hitting top form and Henderson coming out from his shell in the absence of Gerrard so it's absolutely imperative to keep the momentum going, especially when facing tougher opponents like Chelsea and City.
Furthermore, other top teams have dropped more points against lesser opposition, something that rarely happened in the past, so I think we have to seize this opportunity and keep sailing with the wind.

All of us were frustrated when we dropped points against Hull and Soto because I feel that these are the games you need to win to stay in the game. And then you have people saying " Why complain when we are still at second place?" " NO worries, Arsenal and Chelsea also dropped points mahhhhh" etc etc. Our position before Christmas was in fact partially contributed by the failure of our rivals to capitalize on their opponents.

Now that our momentum have been stonewalled by this 2 defeats, we need to find our feet back as soon as possible. No question about it, we need QUALITY reinforcements in January; or else ALL our players' brilliant effort in the first half of the season MAY end up with nothing. Remember, name of the game is KEEP UP and not CATCH UP.

If you follow the reserve football, you would know that Smith has tons of pace. He has played fullback and winger for both the youth and reserve teams. Aspas and Alberto do not have pace and they are not wide players. I won't deny that Smith did poorly, but obviously BR didn't know how he would turn up until he made the call.
